uboats Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 I'm learning Su-25T and Shkval system to search ground unit. In most cases, it is difficult to identify those ground unit through the TV, even I know where they are. Even I turned on the labels, I can see the labels in the cockpit, but it cost me a lot to find them in TV. Especially under pool light (dawn or dusk), those ground units are more difficult to be found. How can I improve my efficiency/effectiveness of using Shkval. kontiuka Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 (edited) A few good tips ... 1. Before flying the mission, carefully read the briefing. It may tell you important details; for example, the target is marked with smoke. Also, look at the mission planner to get an idea of where the target is. Is it east or west of a river? Is it in a city? etc. 2. Listen to your wingman. He is like an early warning system. He'll see the targets before you do and direct you to them. 3. Use the slant range feature on your shkval. When your wingman calls out, for example, enemy armour 12 o'clock for 10km, turn on your shkval and lock it onto empty ground. The slant range will appear in the center of your tv screen. Then pan the shkval until the slant range is around 10 or so km approximately. This should help you narrow in on the general target area. 4. When you do locate the target, try to do as much damage on the first pass. Then on subsequent passes, you can home in on the smoke from the destroyed units. 5. When trying to find SAMs or triple A, use your RWR to put the threat on your nose. Keep the shkval zoomed out and do shallow S turns until you see the bugger on the tv screen. A caveat to this is the more erratically you fly, the harder it will be for the AA to kill you. Also, make sure you drop lots of flares or chaff when trying to engage anti-aircraft. Just things I do that I find useful. Edited November 5, 2013 by kontiuka 1

Lanzfeld Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Same topic.... 1. Did we lose one of the zoom magnifications? The manual says 1X, 7X and 23X I think but I only have 2 settings (not sure which ones though). 2. Can we still adjust the "gate" size for the lock box? 10 meters, 20 meters, etc? I cant seem to do it with default keys.

I cant seem to do it with default keys.I think the manual is wrong then. The Shkval has always had 2 zoom settings, in DCS World anyways. 8x and 23x, I believe. Yes, you can adjust the gate size. I can't remember what the default keys are because I use the cursor arrow keys instead. If they involve pressing Shift or Ctrl or Alt, make sure you're pressing the ones on the correct side of the keyboard.

SFAL Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 What helped me was to use the radio compass. Your waypoints in most cases correspond to enemy positions. So read briefing chek for light condition and what threats are present. Equip LLTV pod in all cases if you are free of radiating SAMs. Helps to find stuff in citys. So the methology: after take off set nav point that takes you to the area of intrerest. Notice the heading change on the compass. The single arrow is where it is. The duble yellow is the preset route to wp. You dont need to follow unless u need to. But thats bit more advanced. You get 2 counter on the compass. One is heading to it and the other is range. When you get aprox 35km to it turn on ground mode. Lock TV up and if you have altitude engage auto pilot folow route. This way the aircraft will fly where the tv is pointed and keep altitude. Now in the bottom midle of hud you get a range. Look ot in the directon and range where the radio compass points and ranges. Slew around and if u havent found targets dissengage ap at 12km and re distance your self for another recon pass. 20km does the job. Do not over fly target zone untill you are clear of SAMs and AAA. Good luck!
