Hit by SA-13 at 13,000'

I was hit by an SA-13 at 13,000'+

On the iWarthog app that lists the max effective altitude at 11,483'

the vehicle was near the coast so it's own altitude was about sea level

so I'm wondering how I got hit?

Was your altitude of 13000'+ MSL or AGL? It was likely MSL. The next thing to keep in mind is the altitude between you and the SA-13. So what was the ground level altitude of the SA-13? If say it was up to 2000', then of course you would be inside of that envelope.

Effective altitude isn't really a ceiling. If you just fly straight and level assuming you won't get hit, there's a chance it may have just run into you on its last legs.

Effective to me translates into having sufficient energy to sustain a pursuit curve... I don't think that's when it completely runs out of momentum.

I was thinking the same thing as hobo- but if you say he was near the coast along the water... well...

Do read the OP.

I've been hit too by SA-13 at that altitude. The missile probably intercepted you right above the launcher (the shortest path to 13000') and did not have to manoeuver much. So as ENO said, it's not a ceiling, it's an effective altitude at which the PK is still acceptable. The SA-13 operator just got lucky.

I've read it already. And yes Turbo, Eno is correct. I also am correct in my statement provided the information from the OP (or lack there of). These are both plausible reasons as to being hit by the SA-13.

The altitude story is ruled out in the OP. It explains the SAM was launched from sea level.

I still got an awesome kill on all three vehicles which were moving with a CBU-97 in CCRP from 13k' Just put lead on them and they drove into the munition spread. It was beautiful to watch from my 'chute
