The 9M is an all-aspect missile. It doesn't require a rear-aspect shot for a high PK.

The AIM-9P (at least the earlier models) have no seeker coolant. That makes it cheaper, more reliable and easier to maintain, but on the other hand the seeker is less sensitive and thus only gets a good lock from the rear hemisphere aspect. It was essentially meant as an export variant. It are mostly rebuild older AIM-9's, like AIM-9B or J.

The AIM-9L/M look very different with other canards.

Best Sidewinder is still the LIMA to my knowledge

You are obviously mistaken. The Mike model is an updated Lima model with a better seeker, better ECCM and motor changes.

But over time so did the quality of flares so now they are flare eaters just like previous models were at their times.

Jup, thats a AIM-9P-3, the last of the rear aspect Sidewinders. In a short timespan in the late 70s just before the introduction of the all-aspect ( at least in theory ) AIM-9L the Papa was to most modern Sidewinder version available. After that the AIM-9P was used for export for less trusted allies and as a cheap alternative for the new Lima line. The USAF kept the AIM-9P in stores in great numbers as a reserve. The current status of the 9P in USAF service I don't know.

Of our current LOMAC countrys Turkey is also a user of the 9P. About 1/3 of it's Sidewinder inventory are AIM-9P-3 ( the remaining two 1/3 are Limas and Mikes respectivly ).

I can't wait to see how the AIM-9P plays out in LOMAC :)

Only 1 out of 5 AIM-9's are smokeless. Every Sidwinder had tipicaly smoky engines. I've seen a series of AA trials conducted by my countries AF and all sidwinders smoked alot. We operated the AIM-9 B/J/P/L. We are going to skip the M and directly into the X wich is indeed mostly smokeless.

I hope they revamp the M model or else it wont make much of a difference because the current sidwinder has terribly short leggs. The missiles straight flight evelope seems too draggy for me. At low altitudes its range is smaller that 1 mile, against an afterburning oponent the gun suplants it in range!!! Something is wrong. Now I do know early models burned out faster. So I expect the 9P to get the M's kinematics and this last is revamped a litle. I would love to use it online but right now its there just to make my pylons pretty.

Well I know for a fact that the AIM-9Ps are 170lbs lighter than the L/Ms. They can also be use on Spanish Mirage F-1s if and when the F-1 mod goes wide spread.

???

According to the info I've found, no Sidewinder weighs much more than 180lbs - how you'd cut 170lbs off that, I have no idea . . . . .

Lightest: AIM-9B=155 pounds, Heaviest: AIM-9D=195 pounds. :D

Sorry about that. It should have read that the P is 170lbs, lighter than the L/Ms which are 180-185lbs.
