aaron886 Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 The "Forgotten War" usually refers to Korea. Good link though!
AlphaOneSix Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Ahh yes, or as my coworkers call it, "Desert Breeze". The day my plane landed in Dhahran was my 19th birthday! I still have a copy of that day's Stars and Stripes (12 October 1990).

EtherealN Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Im getting old... I was tempted to ask whether you were in the Korean war, but that would have been cruel I guess... :P 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester
Call911 Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 Only put the forgotten part in as it seems it is simply that, least maybe for those of us who were there I guess. I myself was somewhere between Daharan an Halfr al Batin, enjoyin the wonderful view of Saudia Arabia from the back of a truck. An amased by 1. the crazy drivers an 2. realising where Toyota made all there millions in pickup sales.
EtherealN Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 (edited) Well, in the note of a "Forgotten" war: ponder the somewhat amazing fact that the United Nations, South Korea and the USA are actually _technically_ still at war with North Korea. A war that has thereby been ongoing for some 63 years... :P But given the perpetual ceasefire, and being between WW2 and Vietnam, it has gotten "forgotten", so to speak. I think most people (at least those that were of double-digit age at the time) do recall the second Gulf War. (Remember: the First Gulf War was Iraq vs Iran and went on for ten years prior to Desert Storm. ;) A Friend of my father's actually fled Iran back then to escape the draft for that very very brutal war.) Call911 Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 (edited) By any chance? Log Base Echo? KKMC?(King Kalad Military City- think thats how it was spelled) only remember KKMC cus of the 1 trip we got to make as R&R to the PX an Hafr al Batin cus if i recall a scud landed near there, an it was quite a culture shock going there into town being amongst the population. If i recall this is the gas station off the highway just outside Hafr al Batin. Edited January 18, 2014 by Call911
Nealius Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I was three at the time. I'm actually re-reading through Vipers in the Storm now. Oh, and my great uncle fought in the real "Forgotten War", 187th airborne :)
javelina1 Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I remember driving home from work, and hearing on the radio that air operations had begun. Then, tuning into CNN, (once I was home), to follow through on what was happening. (No Fox, nor anyone else that was providing the 24 hour cycle back then, via cable). When the land operations opened up in Feb., I was out hunting Javelina in the Arizona desert. Listened blow by blow, via short wave, whenever we came back to camp. Was pretty surreal. thanks to all who served. Only reason it would become a forgotten war to this generation is because you guys didn't spend 10 years running around with go pros on your kevlar. Warning: Nothing I say is automatically correct, even if I think it is.
AlphaOneSix Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 (edited) I visited Log Base Echo several times, and we set up for s few days just a few miles outside of KKMC, but never visited the place. I was officially 2AD but my unit (1-3AVN) was attached to 1CD for the duration. I'll have to see if I can find any pictures. EDIT: Found a picture of me at al Qaisumah airfield. This was the place near Hafr al Batin that we stayed for a month. Edited January 18, 2014 by AlphaOneSix
