falcon_120 Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Whats your opinion guys? And is an asrock h87 pro 4 or similar enough if i'm planing on doing very mild overclocking?
Tailhook Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 4670k. Newer/Better. http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/579/Intel_Core_i5_i5-3570K_vs_Intel_Core_i5_i5-4670K.html Intel i9-13900K : ASUS TUF RTX 4080 : 32GB G.Skill RipjawsV 4000 : TM HOTAS Warthog : HP Reverb G2
danilop Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) Haswell (4670K) if buying new. Get a Z87 based motherboard if you go for K (unlocked) processor, they're meant to be overclocked. H87 is for office/internet application and non-K/overclocked system. P.S. I'm running stable i5 4670K @ 4.2/1.1Vcore/DDR2133 CL9/native cache on system in my signature with Intel stock cooler :) @ max 75 degrees. That's quite rare for Haswell, though. Usually voltage has to be higher and you would need at least Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO or similar for basic overclocking and decent temperatures. It's great and fast CPU, but it gets hot fast. More so than Ivy. Cooling solution is critical for anything more than couple of hundreds MHz overclock. Edited January 19, 2014 by danilop
HiJack Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Yes, go for the Haswell. I'm running 4770K at 4.2 on a ASUS Z87 plus board and it's good! Idling at 29 degrees Celsius. Check my signature for the rest.
Vedexent Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I built a gaming system around the new Haswell i5, and I've been very happy with the level of performance.
ENO Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I did the same... granted if you're a big overclocker I'm sure you're aware of the heat issues encountered with Haswell but if you're that serious about it then de-lidding isn't a big deal to you. For DCS... like the guys above I'm sitting with my 4670k around 4.2 comfortably with aftermarket air cooling in a well ventilated case. A latest gen SSD, >8gigs of ram, a 670 (or better) graphics card and your experience will be very comfortable indeed! "ENO" Type in anger and you will make the greatest post you will ever regret. mhe Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Also, de-lidding is a matter of minutes once you get the hang of it. I did it to my 4770K a few days ago and it peaks at 45° average core temp under full load with HT enabled at stock clocks. Overclocking will commence soon, but with that kind of reserves I expect to go high... | i9 12900K | 64GB DDR5-6000 | STRIX RTX 4090 OC | LG 38GN950 38" | | Hanns-G HT225HPB | TIR 5 & Varjo Aero | Virpil Throttle & Stick | TM TPRs | You don't stop playing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop playing.
ENO Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) ^^ Yes- but "getting the hang of it" can happen at the expense of not getting the hang of it. So while it isn't like performing brain surgery on an infant... it still requires some caution. Like everything else in this world (including performing brain surgery) there are plenty of youtube videos out about it. There are plenty of good batches out there too right now that people are reporting solid clocks and decent temps (minimal power use) so it's really just a matter of luck of the draw. I've even heard the stock cooling is "better" than it use to be- so it's not STRAIGHT to the garbage unless you're planning on stepping it up over 4ghz.
