9thAF_Psycho Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I've been away for a few and have an aging but powerful setup. I'm thinking of upgrading my proc but only the proc at this time. I have an old motherboard and ddr2 ram so I'm thinking about the Phenom X4 9850. Unfortunately that's the best my mb can handle. Anyone know if 1.26 and or 1.27 use more than 2 cores? Thanks Psycho 1 Virtual 9th Air Force Commanding Officer http://www.virtual9thaf.com

diveplane Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 atm only 2 dedicated cores for dcs , one for sounds other for sim end of things. new edge engine available soon = Nevada map, ED they did say it has multi gpu support added now. https://www.youtube.com/user/diveplane11 DCS Audio Modding.

Thanks Psycho Upgrading to a 9850 would not be a good idea. A couple of years back I went from a 9950BE to an AMD 965. A few months back I went to an i5 4670K, which was a rather big performance jump in DCS. The AMD 965 was holding back DCS, ArmA 2/3, BF3, Crysis 3, and other new titles. I easily OCed it to 4GHZ. I would dump your motherboard and get an i5, or at least a modern AMD CPU. Because the Phenoms are very old.

Flogger23m Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Are you sure multi GPU not multi CPU? Multi GPU is not widely used so it will benefit almost nobody. Pffff. They claimed multi GPU. More people use SLI these days, but most don't. On the other hand, just about any low end modern gaming PC will have 4 cores. Go 4770K Waste of money in most games, and especially in DCS, as Edge has not been confirmed if it can be use 4 threads, let alone 8.

Buzpilot Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Go 4770K The 4670K is exacly the same, but without some video processing commands, 4770K if you do a lot of video codec changing or editing. i5 4670 - Sabertooth Z87- GTX Titan - Dell U3011 30" - 2x8GB RAM 1800 - Samsung 840 EVO 512GB SSD - Warthog HOTAS - CH Pro pedals - TrackIR5 - Win7 64bit EVERYTHING IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE
9thAF_Psycho Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 Thanks for the replies! Here en-lies the problem. I would have to either upgrade proc $50-100 , or I'd have to upgrade MB+Ram+Proc $500-750 I just play DCS nothing else, I only need something that can sufficiently run DCS. Last time I flew it ran ok since then I went SLI with two GTX260's only $50 out of pocket for 2nd card and I got about $100 left to throw towards a proc. It's not that I don't want to upgrade to a i5, but I can't and need to get as much from what I got. ASUS M37N-d with 8 gigs of DDR2 2 GTX260's running SLI AMD 7750 Got to stick with AM2+ because I don't want to change Ram or mb. Any other thoughts? HiJack Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I had the same problems for a while with AMD and kept upgrading my CPU with small to nothing gained in fps. I even upgraded GPU a couple of times with almost no effect. AMD is a lost cause for DCS that just uses 2 cores. Go 4770K and disable hyperthreading in bios and OC automaticly using Asus to get 4.2GHz. It runs cool with normal fan cooling. No hassle at all.
diveplane Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) your cpu is letting u down switching even to a i5 will vastly improve performance for u. I have a i5 quad core running stock speeds at 3.1 , runs dcs great. really what are you going to upgrade on the rig for a $100 bucks? not much I say. Flogger23m Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Just get a 4670K. You'll spend money on an antiquated CPU that holds the game back. Going from my AMD 9950BE to the AMD 965 helped in FC2, and going from the 965 to the 4670K in DCS World helped a lot. DCS, as it currently is, does not need an extremely fast GPU. It is mainly CPU dependent. I paid $200 for my CPU, $100 for my motherboard, and $49 for 8GB of DDR3 (over priced due to the RAM shortage). I sold my old AMD 965/motherboard/RAM for $150. My motherboard was on sale for only $67 or so this black friday. Since you only play DCS, you're not going to be spending the money on other games. So you may as well put the money towards good hardware to enjoy the game you play.
