Oznerol256 Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 (edited) My PC contains a SSD as well as a HDD. I have DCS installed on the SSD for faster loading times. When ED launched the Open Beta, i downloaded it and put it on my HDD as my SSD hasn't much space left. However, with the release of 1.2.7 it became obvious that the beta is permanent and will be used for future Beta versions. So, i want to move the beta DCS on my SSD, next to my stable DCS. How can i do that without having to download the whole 12GBs again? I have tried using the open beta installer. It doesn't find the other installations and just downloads the whole thing. I could just move the files from the HDD to the SSD. I don't think that is a clean way to do it. But it is a beta right? I want it to be as clean as possible in order to report bugs. camsr Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 The easiest way to move ANY program directory and guarantee it works, is to move the directory to the new drive, and in the same place as the old directory make a Directory Junction that points to the new location. A Directory junction is like a shortcut that is invisible to the system. To do it all you need to do is move the directory then: mklink /J oldpath newpath Type mklink /? for help

Sorry, it actually isn't but i have just messed with directory junctions for the past 4 hours because i had an infinite directory loop and robocopy wasn't able to delete it. Deinstall and do a fresh install, that for sure works and would have costed far less time :book: Messing with such only causes trouble in the long run and NTFS is a very unforgiving FS, de facto the absolut worst of them all around. Fragmentation alone speaks more than a thousand words can tell.... The short cuts are different and show the A-10 rather than the DCS logo, but it is no big deal for me. Screen shots still save in the same location, and the latest update installed just fine. That was all I did. 1

That was all I did. Screenshots are saved in the saved games folder inside your documents folder. That path seems to be hardcoded (or written into the registry). So when moving DCS it should change. However, some things like application launches or opening files could stop working. For example, the updater launches DCS after he is done. If that path is saved in some config file or in the registry, moving DCS destroy that link. But since you haven't had any of those issues yet, DCS doesn't seem to be using any absolute paths other than the saved games folder. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

My registry doesn't contain a DCS World folder in HKCU\Software\Eagle Dynamics\. It just contains one folder for every module i have. These folders contain my activation keys as well as some other stuff. Also note that im trying to move the Open Beta, not the normal stable DCS. Actually, i have just moved the folder and updated the shortcuts. Everything works fine so far. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
