  1. Hey Folks, First, I'd like to thank ED for this great sim. I am learning everyday with this sim and that is a great feeling. I generally don't like to point the obvious but I'll pass on my principles on that one : english is not my native language (stupid french here :music_whistling:) so please feel free to point out any typos, bad spelling, bad grammar and so on, in this post or in the attached document. Two weeks ago I was practicing ILS landing in bad weather, and I told myself that training on the same airfield was not that great as it was beginning to feel almost mechanical (turn here, drop gear now, ...) And I wish there were ILS available on more airfields not to train on the same airfield everyday. And my answer to this problem came to me while reading the manual. You can simulate glide path using the 3D Nav Mode of a waypoint. Maybe this is known to all the hardcore simmers out there, but I have not seen any thread concerning this on this forum for the moment. It revealed to be a great tool when there is little to no visibility like in the flight used in exemple in this tutorial (visibility inferior to 150m) Basically, this technique lies in using the waypoint created in the DIVERT page of the CDU to drive the glide bars of the ADI to provide a glide path. As this waypoint is placed in the middle of the runway, good control of speed in final is required as you will not have the full length of the runway to speed your aircraft down. I hope this tutorial can serve to other people. I may not be doing eveything by the book, so any critics, comments, suggestions are welcome. Again, typos and bad grammar comments are also welcome. I am working on a Youtube video to illustrate this technique, but anyone whishing to post one is welcome. Hope you'll enjoy this and practicing bad weather landing with this technique :pilotfly: GPS Glide Path 3D Nav.pdf

на ушах OFF).

  3. Note: I have decided to do videos for each of the missions each with a little walkthrough on what I ended up doing in the mission... After seeing a lot of people having questions about what to do in the Devil's Cross first mission, I decided to go ahead and record an entire mission and post it to You Tube. My .trk files were usually borked and had errors in what actually happened so I loaded up FRAPS and started recording at the ramp at start, and stopping after I landed. FRAPS spit out 50GB of video (1hr 20min of sim time) which was then compressed just under the 2GB limit to upload to YT. I had to lower the bitrate a bit to get it under the 2GB limit so even at 720p resolution it is not the sharpest, but you can basically see everything you need to see in the video. Best to open the viewer full screen to so the HD size. I first want to note a couple of things about the mission: 1) I am using Tiger's AI mod so your wingman is more effective and doesn't run headlong into death. 2) Fixed the mission so the CAS1 flight doesn't fly into the ground at their hold waypoint (although their fuel load is still too low that the CAS1 wingman RTBs to base because he is out of fuel) 3) Forgot that I got rid of the dynamic weather in the mission (was thinking that it was one of the reasons why .trk files didn't play back right). So this mission has clear skies and 0 wind. 4) Changed my both my and my wingman's loadout to have 4 Mavs + 4 CBU97s also upped the fuel to 70% to give more loiter time. 5) I use the Easy Communications option. 6) Will probably go back to the YT page and add some notes to the videos to point out some things I did during the flight, and maybe some goofs I did during the flight also 7) Disclaimer: Do not use the video as an example of "the right way to do things". It is just the way I fly....I am not sure exactly the right way to fly a mission to begin with :)....sooooo any tips on how to help improve my flying and shacking are greatly appreciated. 8) If you have any questions on what I did or why I did it....ASK! Now....here are a few notes about about flying the mission. In this mission you are tasked with delaying the advance of the Russian 19th Motor Rifle Division. Their advance will take the form of two Regiment columns moving S - SE towards the town of Gori. After contacting JTAC at the contact point, you will be assigned targets from one of the two columns. You will have some CAP cover, help against AAA and SAMs from dedicated SEAD, and there will also be some other CAS flights in the area. There is no rush to get into the air. There is a reason why there are assigned time over targets. If you reach the target area, you may not give the CAP enough time to sweep the area and take care of air threats, and you may arrive before SEAD can take out some of the most potent AAA and SAM threats. Take your time on ingress to get an overview of your target, where he is going and how best to attack them. Do your best with the ordinance and fuel you have and then head back to base. You can't take out the entire Russian Army by yourself! There are other flights scheduled to help delay the forces if you aren't able to do so. As long as you takeoff and land back at base you WILL advance to the next mission in the campaign. Prepare for your ingress and attack. Although you have dedicated SEAD flights for this mission, you cannot completely rely on them completing your objective! A MiG can get through the CAP sweep, or a SAM may find its target. Be prepared for the SAM threat as if the SEAD was not assigned. Because of the possibility of AA threats, I ingress at around 15000 ft, and will only go lower when I know that there are not immediate AA threats down low. At the control point, I get my assigned target of the Western Column moving south. I hook the datalink triangle and slew my TGP to the area. I then scan south/southwest looking for any moving targets. I first spot two Zeus, and then some tanks leading the column. I check with JTAC and he confirms to me that those tanks are my target. I keep moving towards my IP waypoint and not directly to the target. No use getting over into enemy territory if you are not on an attack run....plus if you go direct to the target, you run the risk of flying over the Eastern column and possible AAA/SAM threats in that area. While I move towards the IP, I started thinking I was going to first attack with a ripple of 2 CBUs from the south along the length of the column. Dropping them at 15K feet with them moving may have them miss entirely. I then change my mind to hit the first few tanks with Mavs. When the Tanks scatter, they will be sitting targets for my next run(s) using CBUs....also it will cause a blockage in the roadway causing a backup of the other armor in the column making it a target rich environment :). How to get in and get out? South is safe. I you are assigned the Western column, egress west is safe. East is not safe because it may cause you to fly over the other column. Avoid north....there may still be some SAMs left up there. Do attack runs from the south and egress back south or maybe west. If you have the eastern column, East of that column and south is safe. After I made my first run with Mavs to hit the front of the column, I tell my wingie to attack AAA from the south. He only fires off 1 Mav, so I know that SEAD must have done their job well (Otherwise the wingie would have shot all of his Mavs at AAA/SAM threats). So I knew it was safe to go a bit lower if I needed to (beware of MANPADS though!). After my Mavs run, I decide to plink the tanks and BMPs with the CBUs. I use 1 CBU each pass....I know they probably don't do this in RL, but the CCRP release with the CBUs are pretty darn accurate with no wind! (Note....on the RAMP I changed the CBU burst height to 700). The wingie and I were able to take out the tanks and BMPs and JTAC told us we were free to go home (actually wingie had his tail shot up a bit and RTB). I looked and saw some artillery left and with a full cannon load and little low altitude AA threat, I decided to go guns and take them out :). Even with this extended time over target and trip back home, it wasn't until I was on the taxiway at base before the delay triggers kicked in and I started to get additional points for the mission. Although the wingie and I didn't hit the front of the other column, the other CAS flights did their jobs in help delaying that column. I know I have written enough, but want to add one more thing. One thing to help you with reviewing what happened, I highly suggest downloading Tacview. Even though it is a post mission took, it does help you with situational awareness on what was going on in the battle, and you can see things that you may miss in replaying a .trk (if the .trk replay works for ya!) For instance, when looking at the .acmi file for the video above, I was wondering why a CAS mission only had one member, and it turns out that the missing plane actually crashed midair with a C-17 right after takeoff! If you want to see what the .acmi of the mission in the video looks like you can download the .acmi here. Anyways, enjoy the video.....and if there are any questions ASK! Either I or someone here in the forums will probably have an answer for ya!

  6. The SPI is your current Sensor Point of Interest. Think of the SPI as a point in three dimensional space. In other words, it is literally a very specific location somewhere in the world, be it in the air or on the ground, or anywhere in between. The SPI, a point in three dimensional space, serves as a reference location that can be used to tell sensors and weapons where to look. It can also be shared with other military assets over the Datalink (your wingman for example). The SPI can be defined by any of the sensors on the aircraft. For example, the TGP can be 'set as SPI', so therefore whatever the TGP is 'looking at' is your current SPI. Similarly, the Target Designation Cue (TDC) on the HUD can be 'set as SPI', so therefore whatever point you slew the TDC to will be your current SPI. Your aircraft always has a SPI, and it is shown in the lower-left corner of the HUD. By default, the SPI will be the currently selected waypoint, i.e. the steerpoint (STPT). This means that when you first power up the aircraft, the SPI will be your steerpoint. If you look in the lower-left corner of the HUD, you will see the text "STPT". This text indicates that the current SPI is defined by the steerpoint. Likewise, if you look in the lower-left corner of the HUD and see the text "TGP", this means that the current SPI is defined as whatever the TGP is currently' looking at'. To define the SPI as something other than the currently selected STPT, you use the command TMS FWD Long (TMS FWD L). For example, if I am looking at target with the TGP and I want to set that target as SPI, I would set the TGP as Sensor of Interest (SOI), and then hold TMS FWD L. This would set the TGP as SPI, and so therefore whatever the TGP is 'looking at' is now the SPI (in this case the target). As soon as you use the TMS FWD L command with the TGP set as SOI, the text in the lower-left corner of the HUD will change from "STPT" to "TGP". This is because you have 'told' the aircraft to use the TGP as SPI rather than the default STPT. However, if you decide that you no longer wish to use the TGP as SPI, you can use the command TMS AFT L to reset the SPI to STPT. TMS AFT L will always reset the SPI back to STPT (the default SPI), no matter what the current SPI is (TGP, MAV, TDC etc.) As alluded to in the second paragraph, the reason why the SPI is so useful is that it can be used to 'tell' the sensors onboard the aircraft 'where to look'. For example, consider yourself flying in one of the easy quickstart missions. When you first take control of the aircraft, the SPI will be set to the default SPI, i.e. STPT. This means that your SPI is whatever STPT you currently have selected. If you have waypoint 2 (WP2) set as your STPT, this means that the point in three dimensional space represented by WP2 is your current SPI. In the case of the easy quickstart missions, there are two soft-skinned trucks sitting very close to WP2. Because your currently selected STPT (WP2) is very close to the trucks, this means that your SPI is also very close to the trucks (your STPT is the SPI by default). What this means is that you can 'tell' the aircraft's sensors to 'look at' the SPI, and by doing so, the sensors will be 'looking at' a point in space near to the trucks. For example, I know that there are trucks near WP2, so I set WP2 as my STPT. By default, the STPT is set as the SPI. Knowing this, I can use the command CHINA HAT FWD Long (CH FWD L), to 'slave' all of the aircraft's sensors to the current SPI. ("Slave" is a shorthand way of saying that something is being "forced to move" to a certain position.) After pressing CH FWD L, all of the aircraft's sensors will be 'slaved' to the SPI (remember that the SPI is the STPT, which is WP2). The TGP, MAV cameras, and TDC are all sensors, so this means that they are all now 'looking at' the current SPI (STPT, WP2, where the trucks are). Great! If I now bring up the TGP on one of the MFCDs, it will be 'looking at' the SPI (STPT, WP2) and I should hopefully see the trucks. However, the TGP will probably be 'looking at' at a patch of ground (the STPT, wherever the three dimensional point represented by WP2 happens to be), and I certainly don't want to shoot at that! So, I set the TGP as SOI, slew the tracking gates over one of the trucks, initiate a point track with TMS FWD Short (TMS FWD S), and then press TMS FWD L. TMS FWD L sets the current SOI as SPI. Therefore, with the TGP as SOI, CH FWD L will 'set the TGP as SPI', and so whatever the TGP is 'looking at' is now the current SPI. If you look at the lower-left corner of the HUD, the text will have changed from "STPT" to "TGP", meaning that the aircraft is now using whatever the TGP is 'looking at' as its SPI. In this case the TGP is looking at a truck. The targeted truck is now SPI, so to speak. Perfect! So, I now have a truck 'set as' SPI. If I want a Maverick to 'look at' that truck, all I have to do is press CH FWD L (slave all to SPI). CH FWD L 'forces' the Maverick camera (and all other sensors on the aircraft - TGP, TDC etc.) to 'look at' the current SPI. Because the TGP is the current SPI, the Maverick camera slaves exactly to where the TGP is 'looking', i.e the targeted truck. (As an aside, the TGP will not move even though CH FWD L slaves ALL sensors, including the TGP, to the SPI - this is because the TGP is already the SPI and therefore it doesn't need to move.) I can now bring up the MAV page on an MFCD, and the MAV tracking gates will be slaved to the SPI (the SPI being the TGP 'looking at' the truck). To kill the truck with a Maverick all I have to do is set MAV as SOI, press TMS FWD S to attempt a lock with the tracking gates, and then, once a successful lock has been initiated, launch the Maverick by pressing Weapon Release. Finally, if I decide that I no longer wish the TGP to be SPI, I can press TMS AFT L (with any SOI) to reset the SPI back to STPT. So, that's a rough 101 primer to what the SPI is. Remember that you can set the SPI with any of the sensors onboard the aircraft (TAD, TGP, TDC, MAV), but no matter what, the unique SPI with will always appear in the lower-left corner of the HUD. If you find that you've stuffed up somehow, reset the SPI to STPT with TMS AFT L and start over. There is of course more to learn of course (especially the unique functionality of CH AFT L), but nomdeplume's post should help you out with that.

  7. He could be many things, but not dumb. It's quite easy to deduce that he's worth more alive for billions of reasons, from PR to Human Rights, and I wouldn't be shocked if he guessed that one too. Leaving no other option to the SEAL team and making one last fuss before giving up the ghost is something I'd quite expect him to do. If you can't win, the least you can try to do is to rain on the victor's parade, simple logic in any game, and it doesn't take a genius of a journalist to spread the fun-breaker to the masses. By celebrating his death as a FIFA World Cup Final late goal and claiming it was the right way etc etc you're just supporting their effort in leveling moral grounds between "us" and "them". How, when or even if aren't a crucial matter in the large scale of things - undercover organisations are usually trained and organised in a way that allows every small branch to operate independently to a fair extent. He's indeed the head of the organisation, but so is Queen Elizabeth the head of state the United Kingdom. All the information surrounding this operation, the preparation and its aftermath is the same as nothing, just blurry contradictory gibberish from unofficial sources, and sometimes even from official sources. It doesn't matter what's actually truth and what isn't, this is just a game of propaganda, it's all about who's more convincing. Even if we do hear the truth, how can we possibly confirm that it is actually the truth? Each person will believe in whatever they want to, it's forum/pub table speculation brought to a bigger, better illustrated scale. It's a great way to see how "human" people are. Up next: Osama Bin Laden was hiding in Alderaan and was killed accidentally during a Death Star live fire exercise.

  11. Execution is NOT a justice. Maybe in somebody's sick "wild west" mentally ill head. He should have been brough to court, not executed, not jailed in Guantanamo or anything alike. This is only glorification about putting a bullet into somebody head. Second to what Osama did is only the drunken celebration on the WTC monument. Yours and other similar comments are most disturbing from human point of view. Criminal has to be brought before the court, regardless of the price. Everything else turns his crimes into one-sided accusations and hearsay, thus adding more fuel to Osamas supporters. I was shocked by what happened on 9/11, but it was my hope that USA - supposedly only bright light in legality and democracy - will stick to their constitutional roots. Instead, they turned the World into a Tombstone. Much discussion in this topic has nothing to do with "military" or "aviation". Especially since there is no discussion about news (and video!) of US soldiers killing that couple on a motorcycle, and later posing any enjoying themselves "about the kill", what you can find on Rolling Stone website. I call upon moderator to close this sick topic.

  16. Crosswind I don't know. Low level turbulence is bugged ATM so it's going to be harder than it's supposed to be. VMC is 3SM visibility, 500' below 1000' above 2000' lateral clearance from clouds. Cat I ILS minimums are 200' height can see to land, visibility 800m or 550m RVR. Approaches you can do heads down but landings are heads up. VASI/PAPI are invaluable visual aids for seeing position vertically. If the threshold is neither rising nor falling out the window you're flying toward it. Three degrees is pretty easy to eyeball with experience. Try setting the HUD to backup and the pipper down to -170 mils for a -3 deg reference and do some laps around the pattern.

  18. You don't have to register to use the free edition. There is one reminder at the end of trial time, just click Cancel and you can continue to use it as usual (except for some advanced tools which are now disabled). Just a reminder: The free edition of Tacview 1.0 is more powerful and better than previous releases. So you don't need to keep using the outdated Tacview 0.95. Obviously if you find regressions in v1.0, do not hesitate to contact me.

  23. Hi, I have published today the first release of my tool for DCS A-10c for Android devices. There is not a lot of feature, just a list of A-10c airdromes and some information for each airdrome. It take me a lot of time because I have not so much time (work, familly, playing with this fantastic sim) and mainly because it's my first try on Android software with any knowlage in java programing. so here's the link : DCS Manager. You can use also use the QR code provided in the attachment. Note that Android 2.1+ is required. Thanks for taking the time to give me feedback.
