  3. CWG_Historical_Primer.miz Here is a mission i made on the CW Germany map to outline the tactical importance of this map. You can turn the layers on and off through the draw menu (Draw button lower left icon). The Blue layer shows the Areas of responsibility of the various nations defending West Germany. This represents the mid 80s time frame of the map. Note they are Corps size (2-3 divisions ) The Neutral layer is another source i found for the National assignments. I believe this is either 60s or 70s. The Red Layer is the Soviet layer. The main dashed red lines marked with XXXX are the Army group boundaries with the Army group assignments in the rear. The orange arrows denote the low ground and armour friendly crossing points of the border. The light blue dashed lines are the important low ground routes into west Germany. The yellow arrows at the projected development of any attack. This is all based on US estimations in 1979 of the expected 7 Days to the Rhine plan. Now notice that the soviet units are all Army group sized. In the case of the 6th Guards Tank army this would have been 6-7 tank Divisions. This is truly massive. For the TO&E for soviet divisions in this time period please consult FM-100-2-3. Now these are just the backbone formations for the attack. The soviets didn't trust the DDR, Czech or Polish units to really fight if it came to it. It is likely therefore that these units would have been driven in front of the soviet formations (at gun point) to soak up ammunition. Add to this the lower echelon formations and the disposable units (Chechnya, Ukraine, Cossacks, white Russians) which would have been pushed forward in front of the major formations. In military doctrine you want to mass 3 to 1 to guarantee a victory, In Germany the soviets could have amassed 15 to 1 odds and local ratios of 30 to 1. So as to the why the low ground routes are important. The North German plain is too good of tank country, Especially for the defender. The rolling terrain would give excellent fields of fire for defending units to hit soviet formations in the open. The soviet doctrine for attack was to flow like water, or to put it another way thigmotaxis. This is the scuttling behaviour of mice, rats, cockroaches etc. Low ground routes give you the ability to scuttle through and if you hit a hard defence pound it with artillery (which the Soviets had a LOT of). This is a bit of a simplification, there are other factors going on like concentration through time (like ripples coming up a beach) but it covers the basics.

  4. Due to the new germany cold war map and also for other cold war scenarios, the SA-4 Ganef (2K11 Krug) SAM system would now be really useful for DCS.nullnull pictures from: https://wzu.pl/en/ofert/2k11-krug-sa-4-anti-aircraft-missile-system

  5. Hey! Thank you for your support and interest in the Currenthill Assets Pack. In this post I will keep an updated FAQ, where I try to answer the questions already asked or things I want to explain more in depth. FAQ Q1: Will Currenthill Asset Pack be part of core DCS? A1: Yes. The new assets will be added to the DCS core engine free for all of you to enjoy. Q2: Will all the assets from the Currenthill mod packs be added to DCS? A2: No. The library of new core assets are based off of the inventory of the Currenthill mod packs, but each asset are carefully chosen to be added to DCS. Each new core asset are implemented mostly from scratch to uphold a specific consistent standard of things like mesh and textures quality, animations, FLIR textures, LODs, destroyed models etc. Q3: Will the new core assets conflict with the Currenthill mod pack assets? A3: No. All new core assets have unique names and will therefore not conflict with the Currenthill mod pack assets. Q4: Will there be more batches of new core assets? A4: Yes. The first announcement letter describes the first batch of new core assets, but there will be more to come. Q5: Which assets will the next batch contain? A5: For maximum suspense, the content of the next batch won't be announced until it's announced. Q6: Are the new core assets the same assets as in the Currenthill mod packs? A6: No. Q7: Will the new core assets take up a lot of storage space? A7: No. They will be better optimized than the Currenthill mod packs. The average size per asset is around 500 megabyte. Q8: Will the new core assets have FLIR textures? A8: Yes. All the new core assets will come with FLIR textures. Q9: Will the new core assets have LODs? A9: Yes. All the new core assets will come with multiple level-of-details (LODs). This means less detailed models will be displayed at longer viewing distances. There are LODs for both the models and the destroyed models. Q10: Will the new core assets have advanced weapons? A10: Yes. The collaboration with ED makes it possible to implement more advanced weaponry like the 9K723K1 short range ballistic missile and the dual seeker IRIS-T SLM missile. Q11: Will I continue to develop the Currenthill mod packs? A11: No. The new core assets will take up most of my DCS developing time. Q12: Will I continue to support the Currenthill mod packs? A12: Yes. I will implement a best-effort approach to keeping the Currenthill mod packs working with DCS updates. Q13: Will I remove the duplicate assets from the Currenthill mod packs? A13: Yes. I will most likely remove duplicate assets to avoid any kind of unnecessary confusion. Q14: Will the core assets support Combined Arms? A14: Yes. The new core assets will support Combined Arms cockpits where it's possible with the current limitations. For example, guns of all kinds are more likely to be player-controlled than advanced missile systems. Q15: When will the first batch of core assets release? A15: SoonTM. Q16: Will the new core assets come with different liveries? A16: Yes. The new core assets will come with summer, winter and desert liveries. There may be a few exceptions, for example aircraft assets. Q17: Will the new core assets have the CH prefix in the mission editor? A17: No. For consistency and ease-of-use the new core assets will be integrated with other DCS core assets. Q18: Will the new core assets have improved collision and damage models? A18: Yes. The new core assets will have improved collision and damage models with more damage zones on par with the latest ED core assets.

  6. Hello everyone, I'm glad to announce that the Cold War Germany CombatFlite theater is now available! If you don't now how to use CombatFlite on new theaters, you can find more details here: Creating a Cold War Germany Theater (Patreon) Additionally, a first map using this theater has been released on ED User Files: Cold War Germany - Elevation Map (ED User Files) Please note that due to maximum file size in ED User Files, most of the maps won't be published here. Thank you!

  7. Interesting comment about the use of artillery. I think that there's a tendency in some DCS missions to focus on blowing up tanks. My guess is that it would be more likely and appropriate for aircraft to attack the logistics train (softer targets) and also groupings like artillery batteries.

  11. we still have models in DCS that hail from the Flanker 2.0 days (and thats just how far back I joined...could be even earlier). Id rather have those models updated rather than keep using 30 year old models thats supposed to be "modern".

  12. Thank you @VFXBLENDER for your response. i saw the YouTube videos showing the use of ZELL in the United States and West Germany in the 1950's and 1960's. I don't know if there is any publicly available information for the ZELL systems on the F-104. When I saw the Aerges F-104 videos showing their latest updates, I imagined the ZELL system might have been an option. I saw myself and F-104 strapped to the booster rocket just waiting to launch and go after the bad guys. This would be great for the CW Germany map. Mike Force Team

  14. +1 Any news on this topic? Now with cold war Germany I really wish a low PK SAM / Manpads to toy with on the frontline that wont sniperkill my MI8 or F4

  15. It actually would be quite cool for Aerges to offer this option, especially if they want to make flying the plane an immersive and historically accurate experience.

  16. In my opinion it would be better if Aerges would implement a full English cockpit option themself. That way its secured in future updates and we can easily choose from dropdown box in special tab.

  19. So, the inner wheels should be slighty wider ? That´s your criticism ? I`m not sure what I´m supposed to look at with the Iskander. Both the T-90 and the Iskander look fantastic to me and I´m really looking forward to these assets. I think you have to tone down your expectations to a realistic level. Most of the time, people are looking at these through a targeting pod from 10 miles away. And I think it´s really unfair to the developers to call these "very bad" or "made by a schoolboy" - these are very high quality models.

  26. Hydraulic failure. That seems to be the only thing that breaks without everything going. Everything else seems to quickly end up a double flame out dead stick with optional fire. Which you can get back on the ground with, but typically the choice is eject while you still have altitude to be safe. And always when you will only glide to water, don’t ditch. It glides better than you think it would.

  28. Currenthill Assets Pack We are excited to announce a new partnership with Currenthill, which will bring many of his outstanding ground vehicles, aircraft, and ship AI assets to DCS. Currenthill is well known in the DCS community for his excellent mod packs and these AI assets will be added to the Core engine free for all of you to enjoy. A huge amount of work has gone into integrating the assets; creating Levels of Detail; generating IR textures; adding desert, woodland and winter textures; creating damaged and destroyed models, and more. In parallel, we are creating new weapons like the Iskander, ATACMS, and IRIS-T SLM missiles to support these new assets. Some assets will also add new capabilities such as the IRIS-T surface to air missile system that features active radar-guidance paired with infrared-guidance; this makes it a deadly adversary. This first set of Currenthill assets will include the FV101 and the lightweight FV107 armoured vehicle for your South Atlantic missions; the Tor M2 and Pantsir S1 for short range and air defense systems; and enhanced Russian Main Battle Tanks (MBT) like the T-90A and T-90M. The M-ATV, M1083 tactical truck, and M1130 command vehicle will also be included for your Mid-East missions. For your European theatre missions, you’ll have a diverse range of new assets such as the Project 22160 Patrol Ship and air assets including the Mi-28N attack helicopter and the Tu-95MS bomber equipped with Kh-101 cruise missiles. For ground operations, you'll gain access to the BMPT Terminator IFV, the TOS-1A multiple rocket launcher, the 9K720 Iskander short range ballistic missile, the T-84 Oplot-M, and the T-64BV MBTs. Additionally, the modern IRIS-T SLM medium-range SAM and the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) that features both Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) and Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) will also be at your disposal. We look forward to adding additional Currenthill assets in the future. The first iteration of the Currenthill Assets Pack will contain: FV101 Scorpion LT FV107 Scimitar CRV T-90A MBT T-90M MBT T-84 Oplot-M MBT T-64 Bv 2017 MBT M1130 Stryker ICV M-ATV MRAP BMPT Terminator IFV 9K720 Iskander SRBM (with 9M723K1) M142 GMLRS MRL (with M30A1/M31 GMLRS) M142 ATACMS MRL (with M39A1 ATACMS) Pantsir S1 SPAAGM (with 57E6) Tor M2 SHORAD (with 9M338) TOS-1A MRL (with MO.1.01.04M) M1083 MTV Truck IRIS-T SLM LN SAM (with IRIS-T SLM) IRIS-T SLM STR SAM IRIS-T SLM CP SAM Tu-95MS Bomber (with Kh-101 and Kh-555) Mi-28N Attack Helicopter (with Ataka and Igla) Project 22160 Patrol Ship with SA-15 (Tor-M2) Project 22160 Patrol Ship Each Asset comes with: High resolution textures LODs for both model and destroyed model Custom sounds Animations Summer, desert and winter liveries FLIR textures Encyclopedia entries We continue working on the integration of the assets into the DCS Core, and we look forward to sharing more details soon. A special thanks to Currenthill for bringing you all these tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, ships, and AI aircraft that will provide even more interesting and engaging missions to DCS.

  29. And I suppose for the record, the formation you are attempting to defend against would not at all be a formation that these bombers would be using. They have their own radars that would be blocked for the same exact reason.

  30. Well, if you don't know yet, it is something that you must have in mind when seeing modules announcements: the average time it takes a module from the announcement to release is around 3 to 5 years. And if it is released earlier, it will be in a very alpha state, like the Chinook was. And usually at release, the module will lack subsystems and a complete damage model. The thing I've learned by playing DCS in the last 15 years is that you just don't get into the hype after an announcement. You forget about it and meanwhile you enjoy what you can while you can. And when and if it is released, you enjoy the new toy. In the end, DCS release dates are like Darth Vader's line to Lando Calrissian: "I'm altering the deal, pray I don't alter it any further".

  34. Regarding: Q17: Will the new core assets have the CH prefix in the mission editor? A17: No. For consistency and ease-of-use the new core assets will be integrated with other DCS core assets. I wish ED reversed this decision, as I find it useful to easily identify the asset's origin, in the same way as was done with Massun's Assets, plus it is kind of a recognition for his efforts to add AI units to DCS.

  37. It was said that the release would be moved from Q1 to Q2, but I'm afraid we'll find out that it will be even later from what we see. Currently ED says "later this year" which may be ambiguous. Wags in his videos about Cold War Germany never used the MiG-29 FF model, and he always liked to show about new things in connection with videos about other topics. So not 2 weeks I suppose … Q3-Q4.

  38. Is there a plan for when George displays the target list that the highest threat in the search area is the first option? For example if there is an Manpad in a group of infantry, the manpad should be a priority, not having to go down the list to discover it. Also depending on how the mission is set up he can track enemy static objects while having to spam down the list looking for a threat. So like 40 static objects can be listed before seeing any threat.

  43. Buy it, if you love it! Meaning: Do you know what is it for? Do you know it was purpose built to do one thing and one thing only, but very well done? Do you know it is a indirect descendant of the F-111? Albeit slower, but much more A-A capable? Anyways, if you know for what it was built to, what is its mission and what you can do with it, you will be a very happy camper. The big mistake people made when buying it was to expect it to be a great dogfighter. A lot of people were clamoring for the removal of the CFTs in order to make it more maneuverable. But, IMO, they were wrong, and didn't understand what the Mudhen is and what it was made to do. I know it has been used to patrol No-Fly Zones in Iraq and in the Baltic States to keep the Russian at bay, using solely Air-to-Air loadouts. It is a great BVR fighter, the most powerful radar in the game. But what is great about it is to fly low and fast, this is where it likes to be. You can go 500 nm at 500 knots at 500 feet from the ground, and only then start worrying about your fuel state. That loaded with 4 GBU-12's and 2 GBU-10s and two bags. It is an amazing bird. Regarding the lack of modern gizmos like the JHCMS and Link-16...well, for me it doesn't make any difference, since I play 99% of time in A-G mode. But a having newer, more modern TPOD wouldn't hurt. The state it is now in game is playable, it is a lot of fun. Has some unattended bugs, but nothing that makes the module completely broken. In the state that it is now, you can simulate Late Cold War scenarios, like the Gulf War. Or the Global War on Terror, with no contested airspace. Anyway, if you love it, buy it. If you know that it is mostly a Strike platform, that can perform other roles, but was purpose built to deliver bombs deep inside enemy territory following a Cold War doctrine, you won't be disappointed. Just don't expect it to out turn an F-16.

  44. I pulled the trigger shortly after having read all your messages and it was very much worth it. The F-15E does exactly what I want: change up things when playing DCS Retribution. It feels so different than the F-16C! It feels heavier and much more powerful, evading SAMs is a joy, the huge fuel tank is a relief, the pilot cockpit delightfully uncluttered. The workload is insane, obviously, as there is a WSO seat for a reason but I do manage the A/G radar and the TPOD in combination with the Smart Weapons menu quite well already. Air to Air works much better than I expected. The sun visor is not to be underestimated! Yes, as a module with stopped progress and unknown future, 40€ or even 30€ might have been a more reasonable price. Things I miss: - HMCS - more armament like SDBs The real problem: - I am now even more invested in the whole 'situation' and I hope the F-15E stays playable for a long, long time with all the current features and maybe even some additions.

  46. It is not messy in real life. All the existing navaids with their locations and frequencies are available online for free from the respective AIPs. For example here's Norway (enroute are in part 2 ENR 4, landing navaids are in part 3 of the document, separate for each airport). https://ais.avinor.no/no/AIP/View/136/2025-01-23-AIRAC/html/index-en-GB.html Obtaining historical data is more difficult, but since the maps in DCS represent modern times, this is not a big problem. The problem is that DCS developers do not know, or do not care about the issue.
