Anyone has any of these 1156 socket CPUs lying around collecting dust, preferably an i7? I found a few on ebay but can't afford to lose money to some scammer. I prefer to buy from people in the States since he can ship it to my sister in CA. She's sending a bunch of stuff for my kids and this would be a perfect opportunity for free shipping from USA. :D

I'm going to see what's new with weather first thing. Hopefully heavy rain or heavy turbulence flight gets a lot more realistic/interesting in terms of visual, sound and control. Then I'll sight see, strafe and repeat.

It took me few hours to bake 1 ambient occlusion map on a model with some 20,000 polys. My latest model is in the mid 200,000 polys range so take a wild guess how long that took. I originally thought perhaps a latest gen chip would shrink rendering or baking time to minutes so I came and asked. The answer was I need i7 so I changed my mind. People do that every day. Even scientists. :)

Just to put things in perspective, an i5 4690K costs around 84% of an average person's salary in this country. :D I can do 8 more gig of RAM if that'd significantly cut render time. Honestly though, I wouldn't feel right spending 506 usd for an i7 and a mobo.

It has been years since I kept myself up-to-date on pc tech. I do recall AMD came out with something like 6 cores at reasonable price around the time when I bought my i3 530. I know that must have been over three years ago but I just thought perhaps they might have some 12 cores cpu for the price of i5. I guess not. Anyway, after some serious mulling, I feel that same amount of cash that'd get me a mobo and cpu would be better spent on quality mouse, keyboard, case, and finally get myself a set of speakers. I've always dream of using high quality mouse for some reason. I bet they feel nice in your hands. :D Might even get me one of those 3D Connexion space mouse. I can live with my i3 530 and wait 4 hours to render ambient occlusion. Think it might even be 5 hours. lol

Owww.. No can do on i7. :( Anyway, I guess an i5 or a similar priced AMD will have to suffice. Thanks, guys. Back to searching.

I've read specs and reviews and to be honest, I'm still confused. The i3 has 2 cores with hyper-threading while i5 has 4 without hyper-threading. Hyper-threading fools windows into thinking the i3 has double its cores while i5 physically has 4. Ok. Ok..so, which is better then for 3d animation, rendering and DCS? I'm thinking i5 with four physical cores is better, but is it worth it at double the price? I could get i3 and a mobo for the price of i5 alone.
