GTX2080ti -- Is it worth paying the premium ?.

.... and I have a Rift S to add to that, so the "upgrade" cost is maybe justifiable..... I've nearly convinced myself :) !!. -
GTX2080ti -- Is it worth paying the premium ?.
Gunnergolly replied to Gunnergolly's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Thanks for your informative reply BitMaster, gives me an insight in to how the manufacturers categorize their GPU's during/after the manufacturing process. It would be interesting to know the performance difference between the above two cards, i've no idea but I'm guessing that the difference would only be 2 or 3 FPS between them. At the moment to get consistent 40FPS (80Hz mode) with my Index i'm having to turn MSAA (x2) off and I'm hoping that a 2080ti would provide the necessary grunt in order that I can turn it back on again. However I agree with you at £1000+ their somewhat overpriced, that's a lot of money to pay in order to turn MSAA back on !!.... I guess that I am now just trying to justify the expense of a 2080ti to myself..... Even the cheaper one :). -
I play DCS exclusively VR with a Valve Index and reluctantly (given their cost) considering purchasing a GTX2080ti. Looking at what's available is it really worth paying the premium between for example these two cards ?. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-geforce-rtx-2080-ti-gaming-x-trio-11264mb-gddr6-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-34e-ms.html https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-geforce-rtx-2080-ti-ventus-gp-11264mb-gddr6-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-34u-ms.html I'm thinking that maybe I should buy the cheaper of the two, because relatively speaking it will probably offer better value for money. Which are the better brands of cards ?. Thanks.

Have been using the Index for about four weeks now and really like it, i'm having to make compromises like running without MSAA and at 80Hz so that I can maintain a steady 40Hz. I'm sure this question has been asked many times before but what would investing in a RTX 2080Ti bring to the table ?... would it allow me to turn MSAA back on and sustain 45Hz (90Hz mode) down the Dubai strip?.

I'm only using one base station mounted on top of my monitor angled down slightly towards my head and i have had absolutely no issues with head tracking. I didn't buy any hand controllers either, no issues with setting the Index up and haven't needed them since. There is a small button underneath the headset which opens up various menu's and it appears that you would need a controller to access them.

VR Shaders mod for better VR experience
Gunnergolly replied to Kegetys's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Anybody :) ?? -
I'd go along with what Aurelius say's, just order one try it for a couple of weeks or so and then send it back if your not happy..... we can debate all day but until you get the headset strapped to your head you'll never really know :). Two day's ago i started using an Index, compared to the Rift S certainly in terms of clarity at least to my eyes it just looks better, it sounds better, it feels better, it's more adjustable.... on the other side of the coin it demands more from your system. I'm still playing with (learning) SteamVR so my setup is certainly not optimised, but to run the Index on my system i have had to make compromises... I've turned MSAA off so that i can run at a constant 40FPS (80Hz mode) and it's running smooth at that. Turning MSAA off means that i'm having to live with a little more shimmering/jagglies, however to be honest it's really not that bad because overall i'm liking the Index experience more. If your IPD fits the criteria there's no denying that the Rift S is a very good headset but i think i'll be sticking with the Index and live with compromise that i've had to make to ensure that it runs well. Just so that you know, if your only playing "sit down" DCS then you'll only need purchase the headset and one lighthouse..... that's what i've done, dead easy to setup and it's working really well.

Appreciate your replies. Between the two headsets i'm warming towards the Reverb, I have absolutely zero interest in VR games other then sit down flight sims. Although the Index in many ways is probably the better all round quality headset, I think paying the premium price for the better hand controllers for me is a waste of money. The way i'm thinking now is that a VR headset is an expendable commodity, I bought the Rift S two months ago knowing that it was just a temporary stop gap between my original Rift and whatever headset comes next. The Reverb looks to be better value.... whenever they become available.
-
Currently using a Rift S, just wondering how would my rig cope with the Reverb ?. My IPD is about 67.
-
Thanks, the Index certainly sounds nice and i hope you get to the bottom of your SDE problem. It's a toss up between the Index or the Reverb, however i don't think i would touch a Reverb for at least another three months hopefully by then they will have sorted out the issues. The extra FOV and the adjustable IPD is what appeals with the Index, my IPD is about 67 and i find the Rift S FOV a bit goggle like. I will probably stick with the Rift S a bit longer and maybe let the Index and Reverb mature a little more. Just as a matter of interest what's your thoughts on the spotting of distance objects ?, i really struggle with the Rift S and hope this has been improved on with the Index and Reverb.
-
Thanks for your replies. I'll look forward to hearing from you ...

How does this headset compare to the Rift S ? Cockpit clarity is actually pretty good with the Rift S, however still struggling with seeing distant objects. How would the Index perform with the Rig below ?.
-
My only VR gaming interest are sit down flight sims, just wondering if it's possible to get by with out the controllers using one "light house" ?.

I have the same problem, pressing either the cage/uncage button (mapped on my Warthog throttle) or the "C" button will not "handoff" the HARM. The RAID/FLIR switch is working fine as i am able to switch between the different emitters. I really can't see what i'm doing wrong with the HARM in TOO mode ??... The cage/uncage button is working fine when used with the Mavericks or with the Sparrows to cycle the "Loft" mode.

Same for me, very stuttery in VR.. all the other modules are smooth.
-
JHMCS is great but it's very nauseating to use in VR, hope they will look into this issue.

I had been sitting on the fence for a long time, i do like my DCS "eye candy", certainly DCS in the rift is not as pretty now but on the other hand it is a hell of a lot more immersive !!. With the 1:1 tracking twisting and craning your neck and shoulders trying to keep visual on that MIG hurts now (in a good way) !!. God knows how the real boys & girls manage do it whilst pulling six or seven G !!.

Thanks for your kind offer, in the end i just couldn't contain myself any longer and bought my rift from Argos in Selby..... incidentally i live near Goole too. I have been a rift owner for a week now and managing to see past it's current limitations, mainly it's lack of clarity. However my mindset now is that i am buying in to the future of this technology and in the meantime i will just enjoy what i have. Certainly flying is easier in VR, hovering helicopters and air to air refuelling is now much easier due to the increased perception of depth/speed that VR provides. My wife had her first VR experience in the Huey last night, i heard her giggle when she looked to her left and and saw that good looking 3D co-pilot looking back at her :). Overall i'm really enjoying the rift experience, DCS is a very different flight sim now.

Still experimenting with settings, what do you guys use with regards to PD and MSAA settings ?. I'm going to start experimenting with a lower PD setting and use (x4) MSAA instead to see how it runs/looks over time on various maps. I have been using (x1.7) PD, (x2) MSAA but i am finding that i am getting a double vision "ghosting" effect when viewing other fast moving aircraft and have found that lowering the PD setting helps to eliminate that. Overall i'm getting good VR performance with my rig, i have locked ASW at 45.

This problem has just appeared for me, changing the scaling to 150% clears the strange in game cursor but it's not the solution as my windows desktop icons are massive.
-
I bought my rift yesterday and have had about five hours playtime with it, absolutely amazing when you jump into a 3D cockpit for the first time, never experienced anything like it !!. The feeling of flight and the sensation of speed is brilliant. That said i'm having a hard time getting use to the visuals, going from 2D high/ultra settings to VR grainy quality is really hard on my eyes. Have just installed the VR mod and will maybe have to install the label mod that i have seen somewhere on these forums as i'm having a hard time spotting stuff. It's early days yet and i'm still playing around with settings :joystick:.

How does night flying look in the Rift ?..
-
Thanks, good to hear, my native monitor resolution is 1920x1080 so hopefully no issues. Looking forward to trying VR.... god knows what my wife is going to think when she sees a rift strapped to my head :) !!. Hopefully they'll be some VR games that she likes too..... and then just maybe she'll understand !!??!!.

I've been looking around and it looks like i'll be going to Argos in a weeks time once I get home from work to buy myself a rift :). Unfortunately reading some posts on here it looks like I haven't picked the best time to go VR as it seems that the rift guys are having a bad time with the latest version of DCS. Just wondering what the sound and microphone quality is like with the rift ?.
