Interactive Traffic Pattern Trainer 1.0beta
Geskes replied to Geskes's topic in User Created Missions General
Many Thanks for the compliment Zed! I could do some more like this on other things but let me first make this one better, this one specifically was quite a bit of work because of the trigger system involved with evaluating player aircraft parameters so it would be a waste if I don't make it completely resembling an actual pattern. I will say right now that I will not do something like a startup or a take-off because I think those things are already excellently covered by the training that come with the sim. (even though it takes too long :)). You can grab updated training missions from here if you didnt find them yet: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=61822 Everything not covered by the default training missions could be considered though. -
Are today's TM Cougars any good?
Geskes replied to Bruins's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
My Cougar S/N is 28107. I do not know if this is supposed to be an updated version but I have used it for about 1,5 years and it has some known cougar issues. (Spiking, throttle that doesnt remain in position, rotaries not showing stable readout when stationary.) It is still perfectly usable though. Regarding your radar cursor microsticks, to make it recognized by windows you'll have to go into your cougar control panel and change the numbers of the axes. Put the microstick axes to axes 7 and 8 and you will be good. Windows only sees 8 axes so probably most convenient is to change the toe brakes to 9/10 since you'll not use these axes anyway on cougar unless you have rudders plugged in. -
I present: OPERATION SAUCAGE AND CHEESE SITREP Insurgent forces have been operating from the mountains south of Kislovodsk. From this area they have been quite succesfull in disrupting BLUFOR operations. The insurgent area of influence is marked with a red circle on below map. Kislovodsk is the southern tip of coalition controlled territory at the moment. We have been trying to find the insurgents operating base but apparently they have been very cautious with putting up bases or even prepared positions up untill today. A routine predator reconnaisance detected a small insurgent encampment in the mountains 20 clicks south-west of Kislovodsk. OBJECTIVE Command has ordered a raid on the encampment to gather intel and neutralize any insurgents operating from the camp. FORCE DEPLOYMENT 2 sections of rangers, inserted by helicopter will perform the raid supported by 2 Bradley IFV. Air defences will be suppresed by a flight of A10s. After suppression of air defences A10s will provide CAS during ground force advance on objective. THREAT ASSESMENT Predator imagery indicates an SA-9 and ZSU-23 positions around the encampment. An APC platoon as well as some infantry patrols have been detected. Additional forward or observational positions may be present in the forests around the encampment. Several well-equiped insurgent units are known to be operating from the insurgent infested area around the encampment, including multiple APC platoons. MISSION TIMELINE 23:30 Mission Start 23:30 Predator drone, callsign Pontiac1, arrives on target site to provide real-time imagery. 23:30 4 x UH-60, callsign Uzi1, carrying 2 infantry sections take-off from Mineral'nye Vody airport and head to holding point Alpha, 8 clicks South-east of the encampment. 23:30 2 x Bradley IFV, callsign Axeman1, will clear the route towards the encampment southwest of Kislovodsk and hold at holding point Bravo. 23:45 4 x A10C, callsign Springfield1, take-off from Mineral'nye Vody to clear Air defences at encampent and provide CAS and overwatch for the operation. 23:55 ETOT of A10Cs. Upon receiving codeword "SAUCAGE" given after elimination of AAA and SAM threats, Axeman and Uzi will depart holding points and advance to target area. Uzi will drop troops at the Drop Zone and RTB. Springfield will destroy any armored targets at the site during the advance and provide CAS on OPFOR response. 0:15 ETOT of Axeman teams 0:20 On completing search of encampment taskforce Axeman will consolidate and prepare defensive positions. At this point Springfield is RTB and 2x AH64D, callsign Colt1 will take over CAS assignment. FREQUENCIES AND ADDITIONAL SUPPORT Operation frequency is 128.5 AM Awacs in the air, callsign Overlord, frequency is 132.5 CSAR available on 132.8AM FURTHER OPERATION DETAILS: CODEWORD SAUCAGE: Air defences at objective are down, ground forces start advance on objective. CODEWORD CHEESE: Encampment clear and search completed. ALTERNATE STRIP: MOZDOK Overview map of operation: Zoomed in map-view showing Axeman holding points and our area of operations as well as insertion helicopter flight path, and the planned attack routes of the IFV's and infantry sections: View of encampment: Briefing posted now for pre-flight preparation :) , mission will follow tomorrow or sunday after I have flown the mission with my wing. Both SP and 4 player coop variants. (I know sausage is misspelled but unfortunately it is used so often in the mission material I decided to keep it as is :)) Some notes before you try: Coop version: Mission seems unstable in first minutes. If you get client crashes at the beginning of the mission, please have the host run the mission for 4-5 minutes and then have the clients join. This doesnt impact mission timing, take-off was scheduled at 23:45 mission time so you still have 10 minutes. Also AI will not proceed untill you start pounding the target position. Pairs have alternating loadouts so 1 can mark targets with WP while 2 is illuminating the area. SP version: Known beta issue but the Wingmen will start taxi way before you, so you have to cut them off by going onto the runway one taxiway before where they are waiting. (if you catch my drift) Mission can be challenging, there is no JTAC to help you out spotting targets, you are kind of functioning as AFAC and have to guide your wingmen on any targets. Mission cannot fail technically, but you will know when you have screwed it up. Unfortunately couldn't make it otherwise because in current beta infantry is not detected by opposing ground AI unless they are engaging targets themselves. This makes them invulnerable against any kind of armored target. Oh before I forget: Read The Briefing!!! Good Luck! updated to v1.1 including two minor fixes improving gameplay because the messages weren't triggered OperationSaucageandCheeseCO4v1.1.miz OperationSaucageandCheeseSPv1.1.miz

For me, when it is above 20, I am satisfied.

I just watched it. I can't really agree there is not enought action haha, maybe there is only a couple of firefights you can see but in almost every footage they are on an operation, or preparing one. For infantrymen the "action" is not only the shooting part but everything around it as well. Personally, I don't give much about seeing the shooting because it doesn't have any value. Youtube is crawling with these kind of combat flicks. The Taliban is not only a small part of the population. It could very well be like 50% or so. Afghans will send one of their sons to the Taliban, and the other one to the Afghan National Army so that whoever wins they will have always at least one son on the right side of the spectrum. The enemy doesnt HIDE between the population, they ARE the population. If not then please tell why "the couple of hundred fighters" that were supposed to constitute the Taliban when they first went in almost 10 years ago (!), are still not beaten. Also, since the US is quite hated in those regions, a lot of fighters will come to Afghanistan just have the chance to take some shots at the Yanks. Think about how much they must hate the US if they are willing to sacrifice their lives against a technologically way more advanced enemy. So this makes it even harder. So please, it has nothing to do with the American soldiers fighting over there and being good or not. I respect those soldiers a lot especially being former Army myself. But it is their government who sends them into a conflict they cannot win. Just like Vietnam where they were fighting the indigenous population. You cannot win these kinds of conflicts, especially not with a small expeditionary army. For example look at Iraq now. This war was called a 'win'. But look at the situation in the country now. It is a complete mess. Bombings still everyday, ritual killings, you name it. How can you constitute that as a succes? The country is completely in tatters. Military succes should be considered completely independant from political succes and the kind of political succes the U.S is looking for is not achievable by military force. PS, If you search the net you can find plenty of movies depicting the Taliban side. they put their GSM movies on the net themselves. *If this post is unacceptable, please delete it.

Interactive Traffic Pattern Trainer 1.0beta
Geskes replied to Geskes's topic in User Created Missions General
I now see the manual DOES have a detailed pattern description. The first time I checked it I didn't notice it. I looked at landing traffic pattern but it is a few pages down. How sloppy of me! Many Thanks again! -

Hey thanks for that Jabog! I didnt know the exact altitude so made it 2000ft + elevation! Will adapt! Many thanks! Do you also happen to know what pattern speed should be for A-10? Its 180 now in this mission. -

Hey great response Chaos! This is certainly helpful. Also I like to see you got 71% and scoring above 50% thus isnt TOO hard by default. I will definitely implement your suggestions. The flaps and also the seperate scoring are good ideas. I planned on doing seperate score initially but then I found it to be a bit much work for a mission I didn't know yet if anyone would like it. Also 60 degree, yes very agressive, I might make it 30, but those points where intended as kind of like a bonus. But I think you are right, for a genuine practice mission it should be 30 degrees. -

Engine start is RCTRL + HOME for right engine and RALT + HOME for left engine. You can reassign at will. Listed under "engine start" in control options. -
Next DCS (US) Fixed Wing Aircraft Wish List

Technically all those fancy jets are Chinese, since they have funded them :D -
Responding to OP question: A couple of years ago I was an infantryman (S6 with dutch armored infantry batallion). You have difficulty spotting infantry from your A-10. I promise you, a trained infantry unit can be hidden in a say, 200ft by 200ft patch of terrain and you would be standing right next to it observing the area with the naked eye and you wouldn't find a single guy. Nada. This in clear weather daylight condition. Any prepared infantry position will have top cover. No way you are going to spot such a position from the air without IR equipment. Even then it is hard, modern combat gear reduce IR signature trough special treatment of the fabrics. Even when unit is moving and they have proper camouflage for the terrain type they are operating in, you will not spot them from the air with the naked eye. IR sensors will at this point. The only way you are going to spot infantry from the air with naked eye is when they are firing and you can see the muzzle flashes and / or tracers or they are taking fire and you can judge position from friendly fire on the position. As for how A-10s engage armor targets IRL with gun there is great reading about A-10 operations like William Smallwood's "Warthog" detailing A-10 operations during desert storm. It has accurate first person accounts of actual pilots. It's a real treat for DCS A-10 pilots. As for zoom, yes I don't use it because indeed you could argue it compensates for being behind computerscreen, but you can zoom in so far that you have a superduper optical scope giving spotting ability that a real pilot doesnt have. The whole episode of finding /spotting targets is kind of lost which in reality is a big chunk of the mission just as it is in sim.

Interactive Traffic Pattern Trainer 1.0beta
Geskes replied to Geskes's topic in User Created Missions General
Allright so basically too hard. I was affraid of that. The taxi requires you taxi behind him, so first you park behind him, then he starts driving and you follow him. I don't know when your taxi fails but if it is at the end of the taxi run, it was a bug in first version I made. The thing was I made it so difficult because I was a bit intimidated by all the simulator experience around on the forum. So I thought, if I make it easy, no one will like it. But now I maybe achieved the opposite :) -
for me the download was a .miz...??

Is this mission so crappy no one wants to comment on it? I honestly thought it was a nice idea and with some additional work it could be a useful mission for anyone getting into A-10 and wants to control the plane seriously. (Not like a Rambo :P) Did I make an error of judgement? Is this mission garbage? Please tell me if so, and I will scrap this from the projects I am working on. -
This is a thing. I was flying FC2 with AB detents and on multiple occasions I was lifting the entire throttle base off my desk to get over the detents. Also, when I have the throttles lifted and try to move them over the detents, the throttle base would move forward, instead of just the throttles moving. This is issue is increased when unlatched but reducing the throttle friction helps to reduce the throttle base moving along my desk issue.

This is great trying now.

Is there an account of an actual pilot commenting on the FM? Just curious :)

Inside view of TM HOTAS Warthog
Geskes replied to Frazer's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hmm is this where the TM Warthog fairy tale is starting to fall apart? I wouldnt go as far as R1pper that it has the same flaws, because the worst flaw of the cougar were its pots and they are gone. Also precision flying with a unmodded cougar is not adviced either. But yes it is true, if I move it very very slowly at some point it will start moving choppy instead of smooth because you have to push over the resistance of the "cap and ball". I am not involved in precision flying like that so it is not an issue for me. Coming from stock cougar it feels like a totally different world. I just hope it will stay like it is for a couple of years and not all kinds of issues arrising in a couple of months. -
I am playing trough the revised trainings and they are very nice. I ran into something that wasnt clear to me in the navigation training. It is when the topic of desired course to steerpoint is discussed. I switch waypoint 4 to TO-TO mode and then set the course knob on the HSI to 270 as indicated on the CDU and set waypoint 4: POTI as steerpoint. What I understand from the narration is that the HSI should then point me so I fly the correct course to steerpoint. However, I was only slightly deviating from the set flightplan, but still the HSI indication was off-scale so I try to intercept to course. I tried it for about 10 minutes flying towards intercept but the indication on the HSI never changed yet the waypoint was only 30 miles away and I was close to the set flightplan when I started to "intercept" the 270 desired course. I reason that should the 270 course somehow be wrong, and I start rotating the course knob, at some point I should be on course. But this also didnt happen when rotating trough all the 360 degrees of the course selection knob for HSI. This part of the mission is not evaluated, it goes on to TACAN immediately so I cannot figure out if I am doing something wrong with regards to this desired course feature of CDU and HSI. How is this supposed to work, anyone tried it?

Having grown up with the first of flightsims that were available, I've always been dreaming about flying a simulator in a believable virtual environment. When I flew the A-10C simulator for the first time it felt like that dream finally came true. For me personally, I do not need better graphics then the level currently in place. Some effects, like clouds and indeed explosions could be better but for me the overall engine is more then enough. I rather have more airplanes, better AI, better mission planner and so on then better graphics. As most people here, I've put up with a lot of imagination in the past, including imagining a green wireframe box on a black background was a T-72 speeding across the terrain, firing shells at blufor tanks with dust kicking up behind it, muzzle flashes, engine sounds, you name it. Check this: http://stiggyblog.wordpress.com/2009/07/11/old-flight-simulator-games/ then think green monochrome monitor. Yes these are not modern flightsims but since we are comparing DCS to wings of prey and air assault, the comparison was flawed anyways ;)

Its an F-16 but still good movie to go with this thread. Not for the faint-hearted. Enjoy!

Operation 'Dane' - Augmentation to IVS
Geskes replied to Heli Shed's topic in User Created Missions General
Tyger, I just played your mission and it was enjoyable. Thanks! I like the way in which the mission dictates release modes etc. so you get to know more capabilities of the aircraft. I didn't use CR modes a lot yet but it was very effective in your mission :D
