I just gave it a go and it is great! I got a mission after take off about 80 miles NE of waypoint 2. While I was programming the waypoints I just missed the 2nd part of the last waypoint so I ask for update hoping he says it again, and he did. In fact he kept saying it for quite a few times while I was enroute. It also gave some mission reset messages, don't know if that is normal. The location was three waypoints marking a road in a valley. The target was a convoy and I got a threat assesment of small arms fire. After finding the target and destroying it, I got message that sitation was nominal. . After that I didn't get new missions, but every now and then I would get a report that everything was still nominal. I loitered around the flightplan untill I was bingo fuel but couldnt get new events. I also tried to get mission update trough F10 but that would yield the same situation is nominal sequence. I think this framework has a lot of potential and thanks a lot for your effort in creating it. I must say I also like the idea of your barrel roll haha. Just a suggestion, you could also evaluate radio frequency and fire the update when the player tunes a certain frequency. I will give it another try after diner tonight, I am curious already what it will throw at me.

Interactive Traffic Pattern Trainer 1.0beta
Geskes replied to Geskes's topic in User Created Missions General
ah ok :P But I found the challenge always fails at the end anyways because I set the wrong zone somewhere, so uploading new version again. Then I am calling it a day :) Done. -

Yes you have about 20 seconds once you start moving into his neighbourhood untill he start moving, you think it is not enough time? -
Interactive Traffic Pattern Trainer 1.0beta

Wait a second, I have removed the link and uploading other version now. Already found a mistake :P New link is up now. -
Since the Iraq war logs mission I decided not to work on any more missions with AI because it changes too much with each release, which was to be expected. So in the mean-time I have been working on a traffic pattern training mission to explore different editor features and make something useful for all A-10 pilots. I have created a mission with a trigger system that evaluates your speed and altitude for each leg and turn, your bank in turns and flap and gear position during take-off and landing. There is also a taxi challenge when the mission starts and you have to land in the correct zone to get points for landing. You have to fly the pattern at 180kts at an altitude of 3500ft MSL and you get bonus points for each 60 degree bank turn you are able to pull off. Make sure you pass trough any waypoint on the pattern or you risk not getting scored for a part of the pattern. In total you can get 100 points but that is a very difficult task. The mission is in beta state because I am not confident if the pattern and the evaluated altitude and speed are realistic and there might be mistakes in the trigger system. It was very hard to test. If you find a mistake, for example you fly correct leg but do not get points, please let me know and also provide a track if you can. I invite any with knowledge about flying the pattern to do suggestions about the mission, particularly on the shape of the pattern, altitude and speeds. Since the trigger system is in place and operational it is not hard to adjust the parameters. The mission features voice by me :), I did these out the top of my head because I expect the pattern parameters will change and I have to do it again anyways so the quality is not good and I am thinking it up on the fly. Turn down your other sound settings or I will be hard to understand, volume of speech is low! I have features awaiting implementation already, including a touchdown rating that was originally included. However it needs further tweaking because it only registers about 50% of touchdowns at the moment so I took it out for this release. I hope I will get it working, it will always be an approximation though because the exact moment of touchdown is hard to decide. In this version the mission treats any touchdown in the assigned zone as a perfect touchdown. I welcome anyone to do suggestion on features that could be interesting to add. you can grab the mission from here: http://files.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/721/ or alternatively here: https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0BybKm7E2zzioZjExMzAxM2ItNmFkZS00ZWYxLWFjZTItYjNkY2ZjZWYzZTY4&hl=en Please try it and help me in making it better. Geskes Many thanks go to ED for implementing a clone function for triggers, I wouldn't have tried it without that feature :P *** Contest **** There is a little contest attached to this mission, the one who posts a track with the highest score of all will feature prominently in my next mission and will also get to decide what that mission will be about. To enter competition post track of your flight and mention your score also :) ***************

Hey Grimes, many thanks again for your insight. I figured out now what was wrong with the scoring, I am supposed to put them as "offline". I thought it meant offline as in not active but of course it means offline gameplay.

I will grab your mission and give it a try tonight. Many thanks for the efforts in creating it. I've noticed that even the smallest amount of AI can cause crashes. I had been flying acrobatics and patterns and so on for hours on end in an otherwise empty mission. It didnt crash once. Then I add 3 APC's and a Shilka and it crashes.

I am working on a training tool which is nearing completion. Today I did some voices and a gazillion triggers. There are a couple of things I still need to implement and I am kind of stuck. 1. Scoring system An essential part of the training would have to be scoring but I cannot get it to work. I am using mission goals with scores attached to it based on flag conditions. Where would this score have to show up? I don't see it with percentage completed or in the debriefing so how do I define goals properly? Also the player score less and more conditions, are they for use with scoring based on kills or can I attach my own goals to that, so for example if player scores more then 90 points from mission goals he gets a perfect message? 2. Flight paramater evaluation. For trigger conditions you can select for example "unit bank in limits". So when does this condition become true exactly? I am wondering if you can use it with a continous trigger and a "flag on" action in a way that the trigger will fire and set the flag true if the bank is within the limits specified and the other conditions in the trigger are also met. I cannot get it to work. If I set it for pitch for example with a continuous trigger and a 1 second control message as action and a limit of min:7.5 and max:12.5 it will fire and keep firing even if I am diving with -40 degrees pitch, so what is going on here? I do not want to use once triggers because I want to recycle the triggers for multiple events and reset the used flags afterwards to save a lot of trigger work. Would this be possible? Much appreciating any help.

Wow, sounds very interesting!

I would swear that I saw a list of all the different cockpit parameters for use in the mission editor somewhere on this forum but I cannot find it anymore. If someone does remember could you please point me there? Many thanks!

I use it as zoom axis. -
I am also having plenty of crashes I didnt experience before. JTAC crashes seem regular judging from the amount of posts about it. I wouldn't worry to much about it, it will be fixed.

Ok well I'll just take your answers for it. I do only notice it when I pay attention to it and it surely doesnt subtract from the awesome flying experience the thing offers. But I have seen my cougar transform into a heap of scrap metal in 1,5 years too (I only bought into it april last year) and it started out with very small things as well. I can have three positions on that thing: Idle, about 80% or full AB. The stick is spiking to the left, sometimes it does sometimes it doesnt. Almost all the rotaries when in a certain position give different readings over time. If for example I map zoom to a rotary it will be twitchy all the time making slight movements even more so when moving the throttle forward or backward. When I tried blackshark for the first time with the warthog I thought I was in easy flight mode and had forgotten to switch it from default game mode. With cougar I was able to fly but always found it very difficult but it was just managing the limitations of the cougar all the time. So I am a little precarious when it concerns Thrustmaster. Everyone can say the thing won't wear but nobody knows yet in what state our shiny hotas will be in 2 years. (Though I could have known that for the cougar) Is it really true what they say about it will not wear with the magnetic hall stuff? How likely are these to break down? Or like the springs in the stick dont they get stretched or something? And the electronics in the thing? I read already from someone with a broken APU switch. And how about the software will they ever finish it lol. I knew I was buying into DCS beta but not a tm warthog software beta which in current state is actually less then foxy was because you cant even print a control map. I mean come on, a hotas with a gazillion options but no way to print it. I try rise of flight and it takes ages to find out where everything is mapped. Though I really love the thing and I dont think there is anything out there which compares to it I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will keep functioning as it now.

When unlatched do you also notice left - right play, most significantly on the left throttle? Actually trying flying unlatched I notice the throttles are mounted pretty loosely into the base in general. When I fly unlatched and press the buttons on the right one I can feel the whole thing moving and I also bend the left one a bit inwards because the other half of my hand is holding that one. Is that everyones experience?

I think I get your picture now but I wasn't pointing to ground AI improvements, I was trying to point out that player controlled ground forces in DCS fidelity might not be as fun as you'd expect. Idem dito. I'll refrain from calling AI air defence sitting ducks since they seem to be pretty good at surprising and giving you a hard time.

If you contact a "dynamic" FAC, ie a FAC that does not have set targets but a FAC that spots and then leads you to target will stop functioning correctly if you contact it before it has called a spot message over the radio. You have to go to his frequency and wait till he spots something, then contact him. This way you can play that mission midnight train fine with the fac module.

I was just flying a canned mission that came with beta 3, with 6 bunkers to destroy along a river. There was an SA-11 and he only turned his radar on to fire, then turned it off again. Over and over again. So that was pretty cool. And I am sure he then must have been cooperating with the EWR that was also there, So the AD network is actually already in operation. Nice going. I have attached a track as proof :)

I also fly latched and unlatch before startup. I think you are supposed to fly latched, I mean why would you not? And I think even though on real throttles you dont see the same latching mechanism, you can still fly as if latched otherwise you'd get a lot of minor fluctuations in engine power. Cant imagine it works that way, pushing full throttle in reflex and then notice you only pushed the right one fully and you make the wrong maneuver.

Now its going datalinks and EW again. Datalinks dont work dudes, you cant rely on it, especially since you say we need EW for ground vehicles. They might have them but if the OPFOR has equal EW capability he can jam the shit out it and if the army is relying on datalink they are toast. The only datalink that is going to work is the optical datalink between the tanks in a platoon for example. This has happened time and time again in real life exercises where they experiment with these technologies. To jam these networks requires less technology then to be able to operate such a network. All you have to do is blast an area with the same waves the datalink is operating in. Granted, its suicide for the jammer because he will light up like a christmas tree but EW units have tactics too and dont behave like sitting ducks, they move and then they jam and then they move. In fact, they can even move while jamming but it is dangerous for interference with friendly networks. Besides that, if you get too close to one you get fried like you would in a microwave :). BTW, EMP does wonders to a datalink network or any force too reliant on fancy electronics too. You cant just say oh, we give the tanks some EW and then they can survive against airplanes. What about area effect weapons? If they know you can jam their mavericks do you think they would even try firing them? Some seem to think that every military weapon has some kind of trick to stay away from getting killed. Thats simply not true. The reality is that a lot of people die and a lot of material gets destroyed. I see someone says, yes you get a warning of incoming planes. Oh thats nice, but WTF are you going to do about it? Pull a logoffski? You can't just bury yourself in your tank. It doesnt matter if you move at all, they can perfectly hit moving tanks. You are a sitting duck to an airplane regardless of what you do. Thats the difference with your average airplane, it has the ability to run away. (maybe not so much for the A-10 :D). It is mobile! It is fast! Besides that in any scenario you would know already that the planes were coming. So who cares about a warning. Thats like calling a "contact front" in WWI. The reality is just that airpower is very powerful and you can say whatever you want but its not going to change. The force ratio's it would require to have DCS: TOTAL WAR would make DCS an Army sim with a very small amount dedicated to airplanes. I don't want that to happen. Those of you with army experience know that most army operations are boring as hell. You are only a small part of the picture so usually you are just watching something. For a very long time. While nothing happens. Then the planes come. And you have fun for 2 minutes. Then it starts all over again. There is nothing glorious about it. In our DCS airplanes we are always busy managing the aircraft, and trying to fly as best as we can. For army vehicles it just doenst work that way, especially not since we are in a simulated environment, how can I perfect my gun reloading while there is no actual gun to reload? A pilot is sitting stationary for the entire flight and handles the complete aircraft so it is very suitable for simulation. This is not true for any offense ground vehicle I know off (with 1 guy as driver, gunner, loader). It's boring and it doesnt take much braincells. Look at the difference in requirements between a fighter pilot and a tank gunner. See the difference? Now why would that be? Believe it would get old pretty fast and you would run back to you aircraft with your tail between your legs. I just want to fly airplanes, thats my thing PLANES! Fast jets with big bombs that can go everywhere they want to blow stuff up. So please keep making airplanes for the next 10 years. Then we might be able to talk about a DCS ground war.

I see a lot of nice initiatives from the community like these tutorial vids. Like Tyger already pointed out regarding overlap, it would be nice if you tutorial makers create your own thread or something where you can talk about the subjects of the videos and you can all make videos on different topics. The community can post wishes and the video makers can say: Allright, I'll do this vid on the countermeasure system. Because even though we've only been flying A10 for just over month there a lot of vids already and a lot about the same topic too. For example JDAM and Maverick deployment is all over the place. The endresult for the community would be so great : A library of tutorial vids that covers everything in the sim. There is some real good talent in the community so let their powers combine and create something unique.
