    L39 pit

was originally going to do the f18 but after alot of thought i found i enjoy flying the L39 and it is supported across a few sims to a high level. in dcs the L39 control options are quite impressive and something i think every devoloper should look at and aim for. anyway today while working on another project i had to wait for some paint to dry so i used some scrap wood to try out an idea with a car cv joint boot and also using a motorcycle brake lever with a game pad stick i hooked up a great little L39 style stick. ive had many expensive sticks before and i always find they are very similar when it comes to the stiffness. the only one i truely enjoyed was an old thrustmaster that had a rubber boot similar to thing but not as stiff. this stick doesnt have a great amount of movement but feels great.
  3. going to start a new thread as ive changed my mind and ill build an L39 pit
  4. hi toxaq i actually have a bunch of these switches that have caps on them which display a green tab when pressed. there are 2 little flaps inside that open to show the green bar. ive decided to work on some L39 controls and these are great for the flaps. if u have trouble finding some im sure i have some spares i could send you.
  5. this is not how he plays the game. he has just used a green screen to give the effect of being in the rift, but ifnyou are interested google augmented reality
  6. hi guys , im going to be building a budget hornet pit and id like to share it with anyone interested. first i got the cockpit poster printed to size. cut it out and mounted to plywood for a base to work on. i have started to edit the file to remove the switch knobs throttle and any other bits that are not right and replace them with a drill point. these will be glued to plexiglass which i get from the garbage tip for nothing. i work at bunnings which is australias largest hardware store. even with my team discount i would still pay hundreds for plexiglass. instead goto a garbage tip and get old lcd monitors or tv's the back light system uses a sheet of 5mm plexiglass with 2 lights either end on the edge to spread the light evenly. i normally grab a few and then when i go back i take the remains that i dont use from them back and grab more. the white dots on it are basicly to help give an even spread of light. if i do back light my panels ill also use the difuser sheet that comes with the monitors. its like transfer paper but plastic and when u place these paper panels ontop of it u get a nice suttle glow from behind. will post up when i have more. cheers frogger
  7. i know on airliners the trim wheels are large and have multiple turns. it basicly allows more accuracy if i have read right. for eg. on a standard pot u turn it a few degree and u get 20 or 30 % with this one u get 2 or 3, it allows u to make much smaller movements but making use of it in sim is the problem i have lol
  8. can i use these potentiometers for hdg bug control and the like. they were in some old sound measuring devices i found at the garbage dumb while looking for toggle switches. i have a few rotary encoders but they dont seem stable even with diodes , the pots seems very high quality and turn so smooth i dont want to waste them but cant think what else they would be good for other then trim. to clarify they take 10 turns to go from 0% to 100%.
  9. country town perks i guess. ive spoken with a 3d printing place but cant confirm prices till i give them a model, i was told the modeling is the expensive part. if anyone has and stl files to share let me know
  10. im not going to worry about back lit panels. i got the poster printed with the whole cockpit layout for $30, i spoke with the guy and to print the same file inverted colour and laminated to high quality would only cost just under double. when i finish editing the poster so it doesnt have draw on knobs and switches but instead a + or a dot to drill and mount plexi glass over it i could build all my panels for around $100 without the toggle switches. if it works out ok i may make a few sets, i have a friend that wants a f16 set made up.
  11. is helios plane specific or if i set up a general profile could it be used with any aircraft.
  12. after looking on the oculus site today im stepping away from the vr option for now. shipping expected in july and it will cost close to $900aud plus another $500 for hardware upgrades to run it. think ill just go the projector route.
  13. hi guys , just after some advise. i have the leo bodnar Bu0836 board and im collecting old broken car stereos for the rotary encoders used for volume control. i wired one up today and used the encoder software on leos site and it works however if i turn the rotary clockwise for eg. and buttom 2 is pressed in pulses i also get random button 1 presses in there. almost always when i change direction. so basicly what im wondering is if it is due to a damaged encoder or just a cheap one. or is this something that is caused by not setting up the software properly. cheers frogger
  14. yeah i know its a pretty low end system but i have no trouble with offline play. seems kinda weird that online play would cause such a problem. i can make missions with ground units and helicopters circling the airfield while aircraft come in to land and im able start the aircraft and take off and fly close formations.
  15. win 7 64bit i& 930 @ 2.80ghz 6gb ram amd radeon HD 5670 running dcs world on low settings , single player i can play no problem with medium settings.
  16. hi all , i found ive had this issue since the first dcs world. i can log in and join a server. but when im at the aircraft selection screen the whole thing just locks up and either crashes or after a long wait over 10 mins it shows my callsign next to an aircraft but if i try to fly it doesnt load as if its lagging. if i load a flight offline i have no issies at all. i can fly with tankers and other aircraft in formations but as soon as i get online i have this issue. is this a known thing or is it more then likely my pc. also with the latest update the game crashes to desktop if i click around the screen trying to select things. also i am able to go spectator and view around the airfield with no problem. try to press f2 to see other players and it crashes. any help would be appreciated
  17. what kind of skill set is required ? im in aus and im focusing on the mirage 2000, previous years have been flying general and formations. would like to find a squad that i can learn with but not hold back in the thick of it. ive put in a request to join the facebook group. cheers
  18. im undecided at the moment. but have been practising modeling as i have the electronics in the mail to build a cnc. here is a model i did the other night. its not perfect but was really just a test. i sent the gcode file to another member who is learning to use a cnc machine aswell. my main issue is i dont really fly combat. i fly formations and just generally fly around looking at the scenery so building a combat aircraft is alot of useless work. however the refueling and carrier landing side of things draws me in. and having the complete cockpit layout in a drawing helps massively.
  19. i had a design for this years ago when i used to switch between flying helicopters and fixed wing. but it was dependant on the chair used. the chair my design ran off was like this one it has 2 bolts in the vertical section of the arm rest and 2 in the lower horizontal and it holds the seat and backrest together 1 either side. removing the arm rest gives u 4 mounting points. so my idea was like this and cut away box. not shown in the model i had more bits of wood above the collective either side to form a shelf that a flat bit of wood could slide into with the hotas throttle mounted to it. i used a box on the other side for the throttle but never got around to mounting it.
  20. do u find the 3d printer lettering if done in high quality would be as good as cnc engraved letters or do u think u would still need to clean it up quite abit
  21. A-6 or a KC10 tanker with boom operator cockpit view and controls. i know alot of guys that will sit in fsx for hours flying from 1 airport to another in their airliners. if u made a large support aircraft and gave them missions to fly from 1 airport and refuel aircraft mid way then land at another they would surely flock in to do it.
  22. i think the argument was on 2 different things. 1 is saying a spring stick is closest to the real f18 function while the other is saying ffb is closest to immersion of flight
  23. a spring dampened stick has no enviroment feedback u hold it and u see the plane moving on your screen. the wind blows your plane tilts and u are given a visual reference of this happening. with force feed back the wind blows banking your aircraft , your stick rattles and bounces as the turbulance moves your aircraft around aswell as the stick getting pressure on it. in a real f18 u may not feel this as much in the stick but your whole body would feel every little bit of wind and turbulance and thats why ffb is so great as it adds so much to flight simulation.
  24. i always liked the TM flight control system. had a nice spring and the rubber below the stick was really firm aswell and the grip was a very common one from many aircraft. since i dont fly combat it was great. after that stick died i tried to modify everything. this is what i have today. the TM flight control system throttle with a homemade grip, u can see it used to have switches mounted in the base and the original grip used to have buttons and an xbox controller stick. to the left of that is the basic microsoft sidewinder that was heavily modified using a cv boot from a magna and the grip from a weed wacker. this stick was amazing to use with the cv boot on it but it has hall sensors and they kept stuffing up. and then to the right is the old trusty microsoft sidewinder FFB2. my aim is to get a oculus rift and mount a hotas to an ejection seat mock up and include rudder pedals.
