Multithreading Performance is Sensational in VR
DirtyMike0330 replied to Flextremes's topic in Virtual Reality
Here we go with the immediate "this is amazing" posts lacking any supporting data. "now openXR shows 3.3ms app CPU and 3.2ms rdr CPU times..." is a completely unhelpful statement. -
I have the same CPU. I initially just saw that I still wasn't going to get 90 fps with high settings so I went back to motion reprojection with settings maxed and MSAA x2 to hold a solid 45 fps. I never even bothered playing without the v-cache cores active since I couldn't imagine the game getting better performance in that regard. I am super excited about today's update with the multithreading though; so I will try and do some actual testing around that.

A little random, but I couldn't find a forum specifically for opencomposite: I use the opencomposite system-wide install for DCS, IL2, MSFS and Elite Dangerous. I wanted to also play SW Squadrons on my G2, but apparently that won't launch unless I am using SteamVR in some fashion. So, my question is, if I click the "Switch to SteamVR" button when I just want to play Squadrons, and then switch back for my other sims, is that going to break anything or should it be a simple "on and off" situation that can be used without issue?null

Is it going to be worth going 3090 to 4090?
DirtyMike0330 replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
Interesting, I hadn’t thought about trying MR on but without any MSAA or AF; I’ll give that a try! Thanks -
Is it going to be worth going 3090 to 4090?
DirtyMike0330 replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
I will say that I just built a 4090/7950x3D system and finally got around to DCS tonight. I tried, with much wishful thinking, to run high settings with no MR, but I just can't stomach 60-70 fps. Too much tearing and stuttering for me. On the bright side, using Open Composite to bypass SVR and setting unlocked MR in OpenXR Toolkit, I was able to crank things up and held a rock solid 45 fps for the most part with the very, very occasional dip to 30fps via reprojection. Which was still smooth of course. This was just whizzing around low through Persian Gulf cities for the most part. Things looked fantastic and I look forward to not tinkering much anymore until some multi-threading comes out. Settings attached. -
OpenXR Toolkit Tuning Guide (updated 21/02/23)
DirtyMike0330 replied to edmuss's topic in Virtual Reality
It seems like setting MR to always on in OXRDT as well as on in OXRTK isn't required anymore? I forgot to do it on a fresh Win11 install yesterday and just setting MR to on/unlocked in OXRTK was sufficient. It remained disabled in OXRDT but I def had MR working as intended in-game.- 688 replies

Dedicated Server on Synology DS920+ NAS
DirtyMike0330 replied to DirtyMike0330's topic in Multiplayer Server Administration
I couldn't find anything online. There was like half a guide to run it on a linux box but that didn't work. Ultimately, I didn't even go the NAS route. I have a dedicated media PC running unRAID (for running Plex docker and whatnot) and just spun a Win10 VM up from that box that just has a DCS server running 24/7. -
19 pages I've read through and I'm still unsure what to do if I want to revert from the opencomp method to the new native method on a G2. It seems like it was asked a couple times but not directly answered. I currently use opencomp for DCS and for nullIL2. I would want to keep the IL2 implementation of course. What do I need to do just specifically for DCS?

Is this a known/acknowledged issue @BIGNEWYat this point? Seems like too many occurrences to be limited to user error. I have seen multiple issues on the forum now talking about CTD in Harriers, A-10s, and on multiplayer servers in general. I myself can attest that I NEVER had CTD issues prior to 2.8 and am now frequently crashing in the A10CII, I CTD 3-4 times in a row trying to take a Harrier slot yesterday (worked fine in Instant Action, but I play on a private multiplayer server with my squad). Something is definitely wonky post-update. Yes, that is a scientific term

Attaching log from today's A10 CTD dcs.log-20221110-153724.zip

Also have CTD twice today in the Warthog today (VR). I've had multiple CTD since this last update and it never really happened prior to 2.8.

AMD just dropped the prices for their new lineup.
DirtyMike0330 replied to TZeer's topic in Virtual Reality
I had 0 interest in upgrading my 3090 to the 4090, for multiple reasons, but for some reason I am seriously considering trying to grab one of these cards and then upgrading my 5800X3D to the Ryzen 7000X3D whenever that gets released. It would be my first ever all AMD system. Hopefully there will be some reviewers throwing out benchmarks soon and we can see some numbers versus the 3090 and 4090. -
If you fly in VR you have to account for something called motion compensation (give it a Google). I had a DOF Reality motion platform and ultimately sold it because the current motion compensation solutions are hot garbage. The motion experience is great but finding yourself sitting outside of the cockpit when you maneuver is not lol Doesn’t apply in flatscreen of course.

Is it going to be worth going 3090 to 4090?
DirtyMike0330 replied to Digitalvole's topic in Virtual Reality
Same here. Preliminarily, I don't see anything about the 4090 that makes upgrading from a 3000 series a worthwhile investment to me. I still believe that the 3090 is going to be more than sufficient once multi threading issues in flight sims get sorted out and will just wait until that happens before I consider any GPU upgrades for minimal gains. I don't understand why folks still believe that a GPU is going to magically solve VR flight sim issues when the culprit is widely known to be the the CPU limitations. -
I hate to break it to you, but this sounds like exactly what I am running with a 5800X3D and a 3090. All settings high, shadows medium (I haven't tried MSAA 4, usually keep it on 2) and get smooth performance all the time with OpenXR. I would love to be proven wrong, but the 4090 is going to be minimal gains until the multi threading issues are sorted out in these flight sims. "With the 3090 I had to turn all shadows off, clouds to low, terrain distance to low, FSR on, msaa 2x and was only able to get 45fps with reprojection, which would often drop to 33 in low level flights such as the f16 syria and ah64 marianas above." With OpenXR? Why? Again, running all high settings with 3900/5800X3D. Maybe your CPU is the limiting factor there since it is a couple years old at this point? I'm happy you are getting better performance with the 4090, but it is NOT "the answer" for our VR flight sim woes overall. Disclaimer: I don't fly Marianas because it is a POS lol

Increasing virtual head rotation- Reverb G2
DirtyMike0330 replied to KevyKevTPA's topic in Virtual Reality
VRNeckSafer is the best and only real option for additional rotation. Works great in IL2 and Elite Dangerous as well. As far as StreamVR, many of us use it without any issues. And if yours is running for some time and then crashing, it is likely a local issue and not strictly a SteamVR issue. Local meaning you need to do some work on your PC, up to and including a fresh install of the OS if necessary. SteamVR, despite some of the hate, works fine. The issue most folks have with VR is 1. unrealistic expectations with their hardware compared to the headset/graphics settings they are trying to push and 2. lack of housekeeping in their OS VRNecksafer works on DCS, IL2, Elite Dangerous and probably more (I haven't tested) but you have to be using SteamVR. SteamVR is what is important, not the headset (although I think it doesn't work with the Varjo, but that is a special product lol) -
I am late to this, but I do have the V1 cable laying around for the G2. If they cover shipping they can have it. I am US-based, send me a DM if you want.

Good luck getting one though Download voice attack and just say "salute". I use it through Vaicom Pro, but if you don't want to pay for the software I think voice attack lets you create 10 free voice commands.

OpenXR Guide - Deprecated - This time for real (▀̿Ĺ̯▀̿ ̿)
DirtyMike0330 replied to nikoel's topic in Virtual Reality
Correct, you would have to download the standalone installer from DCS World Updates (digitalcombatsimulator.com) and it is a whole separate thing from your steam install. MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP YOUR KEY BINDINGS -
OpenXR Guide - Deprecated - This time for real (▀̿Ĺ̯▀̿ ̿)
DirtyMike0330 replied to nikoel's topic in Virtual Reality
Why not just switch to standalone then? Especially if you are trying to ditch Steam VR. IIRC your licenses will transfer. Steam Transfers now available via DCS Account Profile :: DCS World Steam Edition General Discussions (steamcommunity.com) I believe I was able to transfer when I switched from Steam to Standalone and got the extra benefit of a "new player" 50% discount when you load the standalone for the first time.
