  1. Nice find! There is a lot of mithology about the corsair, like many things with WW2 one can only trust first hand sources instead of the same story copied from one book to the other. After the first year operation with all the modifications made there was no doubt that the corsair was the better carrier aircraft. Let alone in your document dated in 1945.

  6. It would be interesting to know the history behind this plane/cockpit since it did quite a travel. How did it end with that gunsight? Maybe the answer is that in 1948 the cockpit was transferred to the goodyear museum where it served with an educational purpose and maybe was modified? Would be nice to have photographs from 76671 before 1948.   9. Yes, not that unique but ''modern'' R-2800s used in restorations only have the single stage sc and do not produce this sound. That is what I was trying to refer to There is also a F4U-5 that still runs the original engine and what a sound! This engine is a bit more special, the second stage consists of a variable speed mirror sc:

Btw, Vultures Row Aviation has been working in a F4U-1 restoration with the original R-2800-8 engine with the original supercharger, I think this would be the only F4U-1 in the world to run the original engine. The original engine makes a unique sound due to the two stage supercharger, there is any chance that in the future we might get the sound from this plane into the DCS module?   11. Nice! Great detail, I did not know that michelin did the tyres for the F4U-1. I expected Goodyear to be the tyre manufacturer, maybe this is just in early F4U-1s? Any history behind that?
  12. If auxiliary stage could not be disengaged F4U-1 would have 200hp less for take off, clearly not ideal for carrier short take off. Not even talking about throttling losses so power would actually be less than 1800hp. Apart from more power it has other advantages like that take off, taxi, carrier landing approach etc could be done on Neutral. That way engine overheat at low speeds is greatly reduced because you dont have the inmense heat of the auxiliary supercharger and intercooler.

In first speed ''Neutral'' air goes from the wing inlet throught the exit of the intercooler directly into the carburetor and then to the main stage supercharger In second speed ''Low'' and third speed ''High'' air goes from the wing inlet to the auxiliary stage supercharger, then the compressed air gets cooled in the intercooler, goes to carburetor and to the main stage supercharger. Ofc air comes from both of the wing inlets.

In the flight manuals, F4U-1D uses the Mark 8 that was reflected in a glass that also served as bullet proof, this afaik was the most common configuration: in Il2 1946 it was correctly modelled: In the DCS images I saw the gunsight is reflected in a more classic way, this configuration might have been used too but I think it was more common in early war. About 1943. Something cool would be if player can choose what configuration to use. Maybe some developer can tell us why they choose this configuration? @Hiromachi For example we can see it in a early birdcage 1943 british corsair: F4U-4 also used Mk 8 in a smilar set up as F4U-1D, but it was directly reflected on the windshield. F4U-5N uses a similar gunsight configuration as F4U-4, called Mk20: null This is from an F8F-1 that used the same gunsight, it gives an idea: Finally F4U-5, AU-1 (F4U-6) and F4U-7 used MK 8 lead computing sight, similar to the K14 you mentioned:
  16. The F4U-1 already had a two stage supercharger that gave it very decent high alt performance.
