Doesn't look like DCS to me, is it? :P

DCS: AJS-37 Viggen Discussion Oops! Fixed! :P

DCS: AJS-37 Viggen Discussion Oh, well then i had that all wrong. :D Yes, just because it has a wikipedia page doesn't mean it hasn't got a lot of classified data. SAAB/Sweden has no reason to be giving out information about our weapon systems for free. You could ask the Swedish national archives for a copy of the manual, i doubt you'll get one. :P

It's also immensely more complex than the Viggen in almost every way. I'm pretty sure they partly chose the Viggen because they can utilize parts of the code when developing the F-14, ground mapping radar for example, without the rest of the aircraft being to complex to be used as a kind of in betweener to be relealsed before the F-14 to calm the crowd down a bit :joystick: Oh and also! The Viggen has has more of a special place in the hearts of swedes than the Gripen probably ever will have, we rarely see the Gripen, and when we do it's not very spectacular, it's very good at it's job, but it's not a crowd pleaser at the airshows! ;) The Viggen is a spectacular, loud and roaring aircraft that was seen very often in the sky all over Sweden during it's time. The Gripen, due to budget cuts, is rarely seen outside of airshows or around their home bases (of which there are only 3, compared to like 10-20 bases in the era of the Viggen). :)

Leatherneck has decided that they want to make the official announcement (with trailer and screenshots etc) when the product is very close to release. But they have confirmed that it will indeed be released before the F-14. Cobra said something along the lines of it being 95% of the way complete for them to make the official announcement. :-)

Why aren't there today any real good joysticks?
RaXha replied to FlightControl's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Sure it's a replica of the A-10C stick and throttle but the A-10C uses the same stick as the F-16, and the same (more or less) throttle as the F-15, so saying it's specialized to a single airframe is just not true. Nothing is stopping you from using it with any other military aircraft. I honestly can't see how using a stick that is modeled after a REAL aircraft is somehow worse than using a stick that someone at Saitek or logitech developed that looks like some kind of sci-fi toy that has little to no resemblance to the real deal. I'm not saying they're not good products though, I'm sure they're great, I just don't get the logic you are trying to apply. :P -
The countermeasure capability of an aircraft might very well be something that was kept at a high secrecy level, i'd suspect thats why. :-)

No one said the F-14 is on hold. It has been scheduled for the second half of 2016 all along. The Viggen was originaly planned for end of 2015, but was delayed until first half of 2016. LNS has 3 aircraft scheduled for release during 2016. :-)
-
Thats because there technically hasn't been an announcement from LNS yet. :P
-
Yes it was. :-) It says on the page that it is being tested (but in reality it pretty much never got any further than the experimental stage). It is described as a FLIR camera that is aimed at a fixed position in front of the aircraft and that aid finding targets and navigating at night by superimposing what the IR camera sees onto the HUD.

Here you go: Rb 04E (Anti ship missile) Rb 15F (More modern anti ship missile, originaly developed for the SAAB 39 Gripen) Rb 05 (AG missile guided by a joystick in the cockpit. The missile could be fired instantly as soon as a target was spoted and automatically steered in front of the aircraft where the pilot could se it and visually guide it towards the target. It had a liquid fuel rocket engine that did not generate much smoke, and had a tracer element increasing it's visibility to the pilot. It's similar to the AGM-12 Bullpup) Rb 75 (Maverick TV guided missile) Raketkapsel m/70 (Rocket pods with 6 13.5cm rockets, up to 4 pods can be carried at once.) Sprängbomb m/61 (120kg conventional bombs) Bombkapsel 90 (standof cluster bomb system developed for the SAAB 39 Gripen) Two external 30mm autocannon pods can be equiped for air to air engagements Up to six Rb 24 or Rb 74 missiles (both of these are AIM-9 Sidewinder variants). It doesn't have any internal countermeasures, instead it relies on external pods for this functionality just like the MiG-21bis.

So am i! :D

DCS: AJS-37 Viggen Discussion If you read back a "few" pages you will notice that it has been explained several times that the AJS 37 is a ground pounder and more or less only ever carried AA missiles for self defense, and it was only able to carry AIM-9 missiles since the radar was aimed at the air-ground role, and wasn't even remotely as capable as the interceptor variants counterpart in Air to air functionality. As others have said you are thinking about the interceptor variant (JA-37), which is a completely different aircraft in almost every way. :-)
-
Ok, got it!
-
So in other words the radar helps the seeker to know generally where to look but doesn't assist more than that?
-
Thanks again renhanxue, this has been an excellent read so far! :D Edit: The sections about the methods of attack using different weapons are intresting. It surprises me slightly how much planning appears to be done beforehand, flight path to the target area, exact times of attacks and climbs before attacks etc. :-) I didn't expect this much planning considering the aircraft weere to be used to hinder an incomming invasion force. :-)
-
Ah of course those two weapons would not be included then!
-
Any information in there about the Bk90 or Rb15F? :-) I would think those two would be the hardest to procure information about. :-)
-
I like how someones actually gone through every single page and crossed out the "Hemlig" stamp by hand. :P
-
Beautiful! :book:
-
Great! Can't wait for the (hopefully) declassified "secret parts"! :D
-
That's possible, the manual is very sparse on this subject, there might be more info in the "secret parts" (have those been declassified btw?). But it would make sense that there is a fragmentation warhead since airburst without it would be kind of pointless. :-)
-
The m/71 bombs are fragmentation bombs with a 120kg warhead, they can be equipped with drag chutes and can be set to either burst on impact or to burst above the target (this is set when arming the aircraft since it's two different kinds of fuses). The rockets are 13,5cm HE, they can be set to burst on impact or airburst just like the bombs. It also has the Bk90 Mjölner bomb pod, this can be equiped with either anti armor bomblets (like the CBU 97) or fragmentation bomblets. (the Bk90 was a late addition to the AJS so I'm unsure if it will be modeled or not). It has two different A/G missiles, the Rb05 (a manually controlled missile for ground targets or slow moving aircraft like helicopters) and the Rb75 (AGM-65 Maverick, no need for more info there... :P). It can carry two different kinds of Anti-ship missiles, the older Rb 04 and the more modern RB15F (developed for the SAAB 39 Gripen). Note that the Viggen can't carry the more modern version of the RB15 that is capable of attacking ground targets, this version is meant for anti-ship only. :-)

Really? We're already back to a new speculation thread? XD

Depends what you compare it to. It is slightly bigger than the F-16 (~1m longer, and ~0,5m wider at the wingtips). The Viggen has a higher maximum take off weight though, by ~3 tonnes. The Viggen has a wingspan of ~10.5m, and a length of ~16.5m. Engine power is also almost identical to that of the F-16. :-) One big difference is that the wing area of the Viggen is a lot larger than that of the F-16, 46m2 compared to the F-16's 28m2. :-) It's probably perceived as big in videos and photos because it looks very bulky and muscular compared to the lean skinny F-16 or Gripen (that is slightly smaller that the two). Is use the F-16 as a comparison because to me the F-16 always looked a lot smaller than it actually is. :P
