Quick question about using TARGET with the Warthog?
Slammin replied to DocSigma's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
You need to load the .lua's for both joystick and throttle from the Options screen. You just click on a joystick configurable and then click Load. Load the Warthog Joystick.lua. Do the same for the throttle. You will still have to hold down the Ctrl key for trim. Of course you can change that in the Options screen. You might also want to assign wheel brakes (w) to the stick paddle switch. -

I'd imagine it would be really easy to find various spring lengths/tensions that would be good to experiment with. If the 4 I have do get too weak, I will be doing exactly that. -

Well, they are not going to break, but they may become weaker and not support the stick. Mine must be on the weak side since my stick will not return to center without a little coaxing. They are strong enough that the stick will center if you release it anywhere near center though. It kind of reminds me of a weaker CH stick, though of course you get more inertia with the WH due to the heaviness. -

Really, I won't call it a problem, but more a matter of preference. The WH right out of the box will feel just fine for most. Am I picky? Yes. Have I experienced better? Yes. Am I happy with my purchase? Yes. Within a week or two of getting my first Cougar, I modified the springs to get less tension. It wasn't perfect, but it suited me better. Some really like the strong tension of an unmodified Cougar, but I felt the tension was a little over the top for me. After experiencing a Cougar Nxt, where you feel absoluty no mechanical influence at all other than spring tension that goes from almost no resistance at center, to just perfect resistance at extremes, using the WH requires some adjustment for me. It's nice that I can make those adjustments (for me) at zero cost but I do see a market for WH mods arising :-) Teflon coated balls anyone? Or maybe balls of steel! Either way, I don't think the WH is flawed, nor is it perfect. For $500.00, I think it is a bargain and the fact that we can so easily mod it is pretty cool. -

Well, I have removed the BIG spring and repositioned the 4 small springs and now my Hog almost feels like my NXT. Then center bump is almost completely gone, but enough is still there to let you still find it. This is almost perfect! The only reason I say almost is because I do like the way the NXT increases tension the further you move from center. This is a personal thing. Without the BIG spring, the WH just moves to where YOU want it to move. It doesn't fight back, nor anticipate your thought. I like it better this way. Hats off to TM for using this design. Basically, it can never wear out. It is adjustable for tension, with some caveats, and requires little maintainence. I am sure I will at some point experiment with cutting the BIG spring, but for now I am very satisfied. -
Awesome! Looks a lot like my setup though I only have one monitor, using it for my right MFD for now. Also, you know you can turn down the brightness of the MFD buttons manually by holding down the two bottom leftmost buttons at the same time, while hitting the BRT button? I'm trying to get my daughter to get me another 8" 4:3 monitor for Christmas :-)

Well d'oh! That is exactly what I thought I read, and exactly what I did, lol! I feel a little 'toopid now :P I cannot believe the 4 small springs are enough to hold the stick up but I am 'Going back in' now and will try it. LOL, this is actually kind of fun :-) Thanks for that, Teej. I guess I was skimming instead of reading! -

I think you are right. It's just that WD40 and lithium grease has always been a great recipe for most things for me. I really think a heavy grease is the best thing you can use for the ball-socket. Also, I just removed the 4 post springs and the only difference I think it made is that it increases this slapping sound when moving stick fastly, front back or left right from center. My guess is that those springs are for dampening only. I cannot discern a difference in tension or movement without them. I'm going to put them back in so that they don't get lost. -

Dammit, I just came back to post that I sprayed some WD40 and lithium grease on my WH balls and it really made a huge difference, and now to see that removing those 4 post springs are giving good results means I have to take it apart again! Argghhh!! -
Why would one expect to see a performance improvement when using Sli with a game that does not support Sli? From my experience, enabling Sli for a game that does not support Sli usually resulted in worst performance.

I think the first TM stick mod will consist of a ball/socket design, just as we have, but I think the ball will have at least 4 ball bearings imbedded. This will reduce the surface contact between the ball and socket to just the socket surface and the surface of the 4 ball bearings imbedded in the ball. Now how cool would that be? -
Surround Vision is what they call that? Myself and everyone else was talking about the normal Performance Sli mode.

Multi CPU/core/threading support is exactly what is needed in sims. I think GPU capacity is way ahead of CPU capacity right now, in a sense. The missing link is for programs/programming to support the process threading that multi-core CPU's allow. Then we rinse, wash, and start all over again, and then need stronger GPU's :-) It really is cool if you observe over the years how the weak link has gone back and forth between CPU and GPU. I think now, it is clearly evident that both CPU and GPU capacity is there and that it is the developers, that need to take advantage of, and adopt to the technology better, and allow us to quit trying to chase the rabbit. We got the rabbit. Now feed it!

I have a GTX580 and so far I have not run into a game where I think I need Sli. Really, I doubt I'll ever go Sli again, and I've had 7800GTX's in Sli, 8800GT's in Sli, then got a 280GTX and now 580GTX. I saw no improvement in A10 going from the 280 to the 580 but do see huge performance increases with the 580GTX in everything else I play. A10 responds very well to CPU overclocking. And don't be fooled; even though you may be running a multicore CPU and not see the CPU/cores reach 100%, that does not mean you are not CPU-bound. A10 responds well to higher CPU cycles (clocks), regardless of CPU utilization. This seems true for other CPU bound sims as well (FSX?). Enjoy the eye candy with that 580. I sure do!

I think a different lubricant might make a huge diffrence as well. If I put downward pressure n the stick while moving it, the sticktion becomes more pronounced. If I lift up on the stick handle while moving it, the sticktion becomes almost non-existent. This seems to me like the friction is in the ball socket. I think the way you have ergonomically placed the stick has a lot to do with how much sticktion you will feel. Mine is mounted higher than I would like and as I use it, the weight of my entire arm is being supported by the stick. I may change my setup to lower the stick (been planning on that anyway) and I'm sure this will help. -

I agree with the OP. This is why I say that I am more precise with Cougar NXT than I am with WH but this does not stop me from liking the WH. I sprayed a little WD-40 on the ball on my WH a few days ago and was certain that it decreased the 'sticktion' a lttle, but I suspect this was a placebo effect. It's still there but in actual game usage, the sticktion is motly unnoticable, unless you zoom in almost 100% on a gun run. I notice the sticktion even during normal play then. At that zoom, the target is almost out of gun range anyway so again, the stiction becomes even more of a non-issue for me. -
I think you will be happier with 8" 4:3 screens. From pics I've seen, 7" screens are about an inch too small vertically. My 8" Lilliput is actually about an inch too tall vertically but that is not an issue since I can define the x and y area I want to fill on the LCD.
-
I see the problem. You are specifying the combined (main monitor+additional monitors) vertical space as just your main monitor. There is no room left to diisplay your MFD's. If your main monitor res is 1920x1200 and you place your additional monitors below your main monitor in control-panel, you would add the vertical resolution of the main monitor (1200) to the additional vertical pixels required by the additional monitor/s (480) and this determines what ["height"] =, in your options.lua., which you correctly specify. Make this one change: ["resolution"] = "1920x1200", I would also do this for good measure: ["aspect"] = 1.6, You should be all set other than maybe a few tweeks in your homegrown.lua to line up the text in the MFD's with the Cougar MFD buttons.
-
Also make sure the name of the .lua file you specify in options.lua does exist. It sounds like you have correctly specified your overall verticle size, but it sounds like you either have specified the wrong .lua in options.lua, or that you are not specifying good coordinates for the MFD's. I tend to think it is a file naming thing because I think if you specified an out-of-bounds position for the MFD's, the mission will not even run.

Resetting the Cougar is cake. I just tied a rubber band around the trigger since my PC was too far away to hold the trigger while plugging the USB cable in. The PITA was that you had to recalibrate it, whci in itself was not really a PITA either, just it is inconvenient to have to do that due to a 'glitch', especially when you have you head all set for some online action, NOW..

Cougar Owner asks: Do I REALLY need Warthog?
Slammin replied to twobells's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
LD, for the first few days after getting my WH, I was going back and forth between my Cougar Nxt (stick) and WH. Though the cougar is still on my desk (almost out of reach), I have not gone back to it for two days now. I am exclusively using the WH now. I think that in having the Cougar with both Nxt and throttle mods, I am coming from the best. I always knew it would take something really substantial to pry my Cougar out of my hands, but it seems the WH is substantial enough. There are several factors that led up to this, A-10 beta being one, and my interest in all the capabilites around exporting screens (MFD's) and man, this stuff is just getting to be plain COOL! If you are coming from a Cougar with Nxt mod, I am sure you will struggle with the difference in feel from the WH, at least for awhile, and I still stand by my own observation that the Nxt allows you to be more precise when precision really matters, but I am very used to the Nxt. Over the past couple of days, I have gotten used to the WH. I be happy :P To anyone on the fence, or anyone in general that wants a good HOTAS, and this coming from an older dude that has seen'em all, I can say hands-down, you will not regret it. Case in point, I sent my G940 back to Amazon before the 30 days were up. I never had an urge to try the Saitek X-65, and want to, but I am not willing to buy one for the experience. Anywho, just posting this since I see a long time flying person (yourself) on the fence, maybe wondering :-) I do not regret my purchase. Peace, Slam -

Here are my .lua's to support one Lilliput 8" touchscreen; My main display and game resolution are 1920x1200, I also positioned my touchscreen below the main display, and to the leftmost position in ControlPanel at the desktop: \<Your A10 B3 install directory\MissionEditor\data\scripts\options.lua: ["graphics"] = { ["multiMonitorSetup"] = "touchscreen", ["color"] = "32", ["heatBlr"] = 1, ["resolution"] = "1920x1200", ["water"] = 2, ["fullScreen"] = false, ["visibRange"] = "High", ["aspect"] = 1.6, ["haze"] = 1, ["shadows"] = 2, ["TranspSSAA"] = true, ["width"] = 1920, ["effects"] = 3, ["MSAA"] = 3, ["textures"] = 2, ["height"] = 1968, ["HDR"] = true, ["civTraffic"] = "", ["lights"] = 2, ["clutterMaxDistance"] = 0, ["scenes"] = "high", }, -- end of ["graphics"] Note that 'Height is the sum of the verticle resolution in my case (I placed the touchscreen below the main display in NV control panel); Main display is 1920x1200, and my 8" dosplay is 1024x768, so 1200+768=1968. And then do this - create the config/file you specified in the above file (touchscreen) in the file below: <your A10 b3 install dir\Config\Monitorsetup\I named the referenced file touchscreen.lua' and the contents: _ = function(p) return p; end; name = _('touchscreen'); Description = 'Two monitor configuration'; Viewports = { Center = { x = 0; y = 0; width = 1920; height = 1200; viewDx = 0; viewDy = 0; aspect = 1.6; } } RIGHT_MFCD = { x = 160; y = 1260; width = 640; height = 640; } You may have to play with the x and y values to poistion the display as you need (move it up/down, left/right on the second display). Also, the width and height values basically let you scale (shrink or grow) the display, regardless of the display's native resolution. This does cause a significant FPS hit. I am going to experiment with setting the Lilliput resolution lower so that I can reduce the overall resolution and see if that gains me any additional FPS.
