Flight Qualifications Campaign
BBQ replied to Sabre-TLA's topic in A-10C Basic Flight Training Qualification DLC
In the Takeoff / Emergency training--there is a reference to being within 2nm of TACAN arc. What TACAN arc? Are you talking about a circle around the airport--e.g., 10dme? After takeoff we stabalize on heading 300. When we make the turn--are we supposed to keep a constant distance from the TACAN station? I.E., keep needle on HSI at 3 o'clock during turn at a certain distance? -

Awesome stuff LawnDart! Technical note: whoever puts together your Delta Soaring 2011 video could probably mix the sound a little better when the announcer is speaking--having trouble hearing him over the music. You guys are amazing! -
excellent job--look forward to this!

excellent-thanks! -
'' Well, might have to edit that--can't remember if it was the Ka-50 or Su-25T, or possibly even the F-16--but in one of those, I actually used the stick to taxi, which of course, moved ailerons as well (I think?) At any rate, I can edit that entry if necessary.

I'm calling this "New Pilot Conundrums"--a list of some over-arching issues that I've struggled with over the years. New Pilot Conundrums.pdf

Great idea--and required if our hobby is to survive. I'll try to create a sort of "Flight Sims for Dummies".

This is an entertaining assessment of the DCS A-10 experience...
BBQ replied to Bahger's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Keep thinking of other things-- The idea was to make me an IP--ultimately have 5 or 6 IP's and provide training to the community. I think it was actually part of a formal Microprose project--but right when things were rolling, Microprose disappeared. -
This is an entertaining assessment of the DCS A-10 experience...
BBQ replied to Bahger's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Regarding the three excellent characteristics of a good student--my IP (F-16 pilot) took it upon himself to train me--in the midst of an ACTIVE career. At one point he remarked that it helped him--kept him on his toes--also helped him learn to be an IP, which I think, he eventually became. The man used nearly all 24 hours in the day. He was curious, dedicated--passionate would be the word I would use. When I become passionate about learning something, there is nothing that can stop me. Now if I could just stay passionate about one thing, and stop trying to move to other things! Because of the time difference between my location and Europe--I often had to wake up and do a check ride at 4am. Obviously I had to adjust to whenever my IP was available. And if I missed one thing--I was notorious for missing the fuel check calls (which seemed to me to be about every 10 seconds lol)--he would really let me have it. If he asked me to rejoin, and I didn't do it AGGRESIVELY he would lay into me. I was generally too careful. All of this was quite difficult--considering I didn't have TrackIR--constantly having to use the coolie hat to view instruments. Nearly the entire flight was head's down (aside from formation flying). As I said before--we never even made it to weapon's training. Everything in the beginning was focused on takeoff, landing, and TACAN navigation procedures. I'm trying to recall those procedures now, and apply them to this simulation. I wish I would have kept the training materials he had created for me! I'm trying to discern it all from the available pdf's linked to elsewhere on this site. -

If money is no object--hire an A10 pilot, have them create a syllabus and agree to be your instructor pilot. I've had such an experience (didn't cost anything though) in Falcon 4.0--nearly a decade ago. I lovingly recall the check rides, my hands aching and sweating, from startup to shutdown. It was quite an experience--and it only lasted a few months--long enough to learn using the TACAN to navigate--fixes, takeoffs, formation flying, and landings. -
what file format do you guys need? If you can use mp4--that is essentially what the download file is--just change extension to .mp4 Mower--not sure if your blackberry is sophisticated enough to play audio files. hehe

GA--you submitting this to Sundance this year? ;) Would be nice if this vid could make its way somehow to our Hog drivers in Iraq/Afghanistan! Instead of them getting a letter to "Any Serviceman" we could send it to "Any Hog Driver--(A10 Pilot), and include a DVD!

I've often heard interviews where the pilot says he would, by far, rather go up against a "newbie" in the latest and greatest fighter aircraft, than an "ace", flying something ancient. It's funny--I used to have a problem flying non-US hardware (or driving--submarine). I felt like, guilty or something. I always thought--"who would want to be on the GERMAN side in a WWII game??" I would have felt guilty if I had chosen the German side in a WWII first person shooter. As the years have gone by, and my interest and study of WWII have increased, I no longer have this problem, or guilty feeling, and can look at either side, german, us, russian, british, etc. from a more universal "human" standpoint. Just an hour ago I was sneaking around the East coast of England in my Type VII U-Boat. I love it! As far as aircraft go--the Su-25 advanced flight model was like love at first sight. It felt, for the first time, like something really close to what real flight might be like. I started to appreciated the, for lack of a better word, "solidness" of the russian aircraft. I can only compare it to the following analogy: if you've only been used to driving american/japanese cars, and then get to drive say, a BMW. I'm NOT saying that the BMW will win a fight against a Corvette--though I imagine even a 1977 Chevette would win against a Ferrari, provided the right driver. It's just a different "feel". Then again, this could just be my love affair with the advanced flight model--and perhaps I"ll notice this solid feeling when flying the A-10A. We'll see!

Not sure what I've got myself into, but I'm going to some private collection of over 70 tanks, and other armor in Indiana. I'm going to take my video camera and get as much footage as possible. I'll be check the forums from my iPhone, so if anyone needs a picture of something for models, just put your request here and I'll do my best. I have NO idea what tanks are there--except there is definately an M1-A1.

Questions about the Pattern Approach Described in Maunal
BBQ replied to ArphytwoCma's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I looked at this pattern closely a few weeks back--and it only "works" when you have an inner NBD to work with, that is in line with the runway heading (before touchdown end of runway. I noticed that a lot of airports either have all four NBD's, that is, an Inner and an Outer for each runway heading and its reciprocol--some only have one inner, on one side only, and some of them are not "in line" with the runway at all--so basically, you have to work out the proper approach based on every particular field, as it will change in terms of what bearings to initiate turns at, etc. Unless I'm missing something, which is entirely possible! -
Thanks! Did you get my email with the translation clarification for your article on realism?

Not sure if there is a hotkey for that. I know there is a checkbox in the options menu though.

The upper edges are from the original AcesII plans. Also, angle number 2 that you had a question about--I'm pretty sure it is not 90 degrees, as pilots are sort of laid back a bit, sort of like space shuttle pilots--but not to that extreme. Some brainiacs over the past 60 years figured out that is the "best" sitting position, at least for fighters? Would be interested to hear other's ideas on this-- BTW--TT--you've inspired me--I'm doing a very similar pit. Thanks for sharing!

Impressive! You guys are really doing DCS right!

Could someone post the mission 2 track file again? The link above doesn't seem to work anymore. Thanks!

Nice landing Came down from 3500 meters in the "The Other Side" mission in "Deployment" campaign in Ka-50. I had my anti-ice systems running--but all the sudden I lost everything and had to ditch. Also--my rotor had a decent landing as well-- (screenshot 2)
