I'm not qualified to answer your specific question, however I thought you might be interested to know that I have just started training with a prominent combat squadron, using T-45 Trainers, & one of the first things they told me was to set the fuel flow indicator for airspeed. I notice that this gauge also happens to be in just about the most prominent position in the cockpit, which I doubt is by accident So I would say that what you are describing is definitely A Thing!

The only way I've been able to get it to work is with VoiceAttack. In DCS I've assigned the key combo 'Right CTL + INS' to turn the heading dial left (obviously you can use any combo you like) then in VoiceAttack I have a command that when I rotate the HDG knob (on the controller) to the left then it executes 'Right CTL + INS and hold for 3 seconds and release', thus causing the dial in the cockpit to turn left. Similarly for turning right. It's a bit clunky but works. I'm hoping someone's got a better solution.

I think there should be a bicycle. Pilots can already walk around outside so shouldn't be hard to implement. Then we could cycle around the airfields, pop in to town, grab a coffee, lie on the grass by a river watching the planes land & take off. Bliss. In fact, if they introduced a fishing rod.....

Fully agree with this - professionalism after all. And while we're at it, if we could teach every person on the planet the difference between the words 'HANGAR' and 'HANGER', 'ORDNANCE' and 'ORDINANCE', it will probably stop me going postal... :mad:

And thank YOU for asking the question in the first place - otherwise I wouldn't have discovered that radar simulator - like you said, "amazing" (thanks =4c=Nikola). Makes me shudder how much useful stuff must be floating around out there that we don't know about... :doh:

Hi Shaky, if there is one thing I can recommend that made my DCS learning much easier & more enjoyable it is to download & install a free program called VOICEATTACK. It is very easy to setup & use & allows you to control everything entirely by voice commands alone - keypresses, joystick buttons, mouse movements - everything. (The voice commands can be anything you want them to be.) When you want to look at your aircraft from outside & enjoy the gorgeous graphics of DCS (happens quite a lot!) what do you think will be easier - remembering that you have to hold down the joystick pinky button while pushing throttle button 3 to the left? Or simply saying the word "outside" into your microphone? Do you really want to try & remember the button combination that allows you to zoom in on the cockpit radar screen (needed a fair bit)? Or would you rather just say "zoom in"? When you're suddenly jumped by a nasty bandit (happens a fair bit :( ) do you really want to go thru the process of pressing this button while holding that button to bring up the Wingman Menu so that you can then select Option Something which then finally (hopefully) allows you to issue the Engage Bandit command by pushing the appropriate button? Or would you rather just shout "ENGAGE BANDIT" into your microphone. (Because you've set up VoiceAttack so that when it hears that command it does all the button pushing/option selecting for you, in a fraction of the time.) Call me crazy but I'll take option 2 every time. I cannot understand why a lot of people stick with option 1 & the old multi-layered approach to setting up their controls. I've been there & done that & no matter how good I thought my "muscle memory" was, in the heat of battle it is very easy to forget or press the wrong buttons. (Actually I don't understand why DCS itself doesn't have a "voice command" column in the Setup/Controls section - it already detects all your controllers & allows you to assign pretty much any button to any function, so why not allow you to assign a voice command to any function as well? I wouldn't have thought it was that hard to program. But then I don't claim to be a computer whiz!) My HOTAS is set up with the most basic functions only, as you'd find in the real aircraft - trim, fire gun, pickle, select weapon/sensor etc. Nothing else. Impossible to get wrong. I pretty much control everything else by either by mouse clicking in the cockpit or via voice commands. I hardly use my keyboard for ANYTHING (except typing long posts like this :) ). So my advice is - be careful of well-meaning people trying to set you up with their great convoluted multi-layered HOTAS setups that seem perfectly simple to them because they've been using them for years. Do yourself a favour - keep your HOTAS setup as simple as possible (as close to the real plane as possible), install VoiceAttack & use that instead. You'll thank me later! Good Luck! :)

Also, a couple of other little things in case you don't know already.... 1) Will only work at 'Blue' airfields (click on the airport icon in F10 map to check) - all non-blue airfields will just ignore you because they are very rude; 2) If still no response open your canopy if it's closed & request again. If still no luck you might have to check that plane's manual to see exactly what is needed. From memory the Warthog has lots of ducks that need to be lined up properly - battery on, hot mic switch set appropriately on intercom panel, is there an r in the month, etc etc...…; 3) Once you finally do get to the loadout window, if you position your mouse cursor on one of the white squares under the weapon pylons & right click, it will list all the stores you can load onto that pylon. Took me ages to discover this as I *assumed* that all loading was done via the 'Loadout' drop down menu - I couldn't work out why everyone was taxiing around with loadouts that weren't on the list! :doh: Good luck!

You just have to open the Communications Window, select Ground Crew option, then select Rearm/Refuel option. :)

As a non-technical person forever on the lookout for simple tweaks, I'm curious why you would do this - is it just to save space on the original drive? I have two SSD drives with only Windows & DCS on one & "everything else" (X-plane etc) on the other. I've since read that it is better to have Windows & DCS on separate drives, but I really don't want to uninstall/re-install everything. So would I gain anything by just moving the DCS Saved Games folder to the other drive? (I have plenty of free space on both.) Thanks.

I have a Rift S & just use the built in speaker/microphone. I often see people complaining about the sound quality of Rift S but it sounds fine to me. And the microphone actually seems to work better than my headset did (admittedly it wasn't a very expensive one) - VoiceAttack seems to pick up my commands better & I've not had any complaints in multiplayer.

Dave if there is one piece of advice I wish someone had given me when first getting into DCS it is the following - download & install a program called VoiceAttack. It is free & absolutely the bees knees. It effortlessly allows you to control everything (& I mean everything) simply by SPEAKING commands of your choice - no more trying to remember a gazillion keystrokes/button combinations. It means your HOTAS can be left as close as possible to what it's like in the real aircraft, as it should be. Trust me, it will make your DCS life so much easier. :)

I use VoiceAttack to control TrackIR (as well as most other functions). Works beautifully. Much better to leave your HOTAS as close as possible to the real thing - the less keys you have mapped the less likely you are to have "finger trouble" in a stressful situation! :)

Also button 5 should be CRUS (no 'I'). Looks beautiful tho.

Thanks, but obviously I wasn't specific enough - what does "ACC TO HIS HOO HOO" mean? I'm guessing Hoo Hoo refers to the dog (?), but I can't work out what ACC might be.

I am about to spend a lot of my hard earned $ on a new system. It will be used almost exclusively for DCS (mainly Tomcat, Hornet & Warthog initially). I live in Australia & have a budget of $3000 (AUD) or a little bit over. I have settled on the following system from PLE Computers. Could someone more computer savvy than me (that's just about everyone) let me know what they think - is there anything you would do differently to optimize it for DCS? I am not into VR at present but probably will do eventually. Has anyone had experience with PLE Computers? Most online reviews seem pretty good (they offer free delivery, 2 years warranty).
