First of all great aircraft, really enjoying it even with a steep learning curve as a DCS newcomer. secondly well done on using proper date format dd-mm-yyyy in the subject rather than the American silliness! but for the update itself, does this apply to older versions of dcs or just the latest? actually how can I check module version?

Not sure if this is the right forum for this but I’m considering head tracking. Currently use two hats for pov and movement but these have limitations, especially in dogfighting. so am looking at trackers. Obviously track ir is the go to as it has been around the longest but there are newer and cheaper alternatives. I think I have looked at them all, or at least most of them. but there are two things I would like to consider: prefer not to have a wearable (unless it can be head/ear mounted) as I dont use a head set just now ir seems the most accurate vs face tracking but prolonged exposure can cause eye damage so curious as to what people use on here and what they might have done to overcome the above. would prefer to buy something that comes with its own camera/receiver, I don’t use a webcam. Also don’t like vr.

I was meaning more for locking the view onto target after it has been acquired. You would acquire same way you would in real life, by looking. In real life you can naturally lock to the target so it would be good to have this same feature in dcs. but it brings an important point, you do lose things by being in a seat and staring at a screen in a single direction and limited fov. So having assistance to help offset that can be useful. yeah instrument approaches are easy, but I’m talking about vfr. Not all airfields have tacan or ils.

Can I straight-swap an NVIDIA 2070 with a 3080Ti?
CTB replied to NorthernMenace's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yes, I recently did the same. Went from 2 x gtx1070 to a rtx 3080ti. All you need to do is swap the card and update drivers. It is advised to delete the shaders folder in dcs so they can be rebuilt for the new card. I went from about 70-90fps to 120-150fps with same settings. Probably cpu and pci-e limited. I have turned the settings up and set a frame limit of 72fps (144Hz) monitor. I killed one of my 1070 cards so am considering putting the second one in for pysX, had this arrangement previously. If you are considering changing processor, check motherboard or socket compatibility first. If you need to change motherboard it needs a reinstall of windows. For me with a custom install a right pain. But like me you may also be limited in pci-e bandwidth, so cpu upgrade (if possible) may not do much at all. You can only resolve that by changing motherboard with a newer chipset. I’ve got z370 chipset, which is pci 3 and 8th gen cpu. Considering going on to 9th gen as it has same socket but I dont think it will give me much more as I will be pci limited, even though it has 2 more cores. Would have to go to pci 4 or 5 to resolve but i dont want to change motherboard. Some of the new motherboards are really expensive. Changing card usually gives a noticeable increase but you have to consider these other factors. -
Thats not great for situational awareness though? And you would be able to 'padlock' your view in real life to a missile or threat aircraft. Its more for convenience and control rather for defeating realism. Also, another reason for using the map (and I tend to agree with you on the part of realism) is because it is sometimes just too difficult to spot an airfield, even when you are close by.

Answer to both is that I don't want to reinstall the software thats on it.

Just realised another thing, the drive I want to clone onto new drive is MBR partition table. No biggie as its not going to be a bootable drive and its not more than 2TB. If I were to switch to GPT then I would have to reinstall the other software.

I've got an issue between lights and shadows. Basically cockpit is too dark to read instruments but outside is fine. This was with gamma set 1.4, turned it up but outside is now a bit washed out. It was a lot worse when facing the sun, ie guages in shadow. Also noticing a lot of smears and reflection on cockpit glass and instrument screens. I've tried the shaders mod and I don't think it made any difference. I understand its for realism, but I don't mind reducing realism to be able to see.

missing info Limited external view with F2
CTB replied to MadMonty's topic in View and Spotting Bugs
Have you switched mouselook mode? (LAlt+C). I do this (mapped to mouse button 3) and it works fine for me. -
I have the same issue in v2.5.6. I did not realise it was a bug though.

F-14A/B Tomcat Combat Fundamentals Guide and Checklist
CTB replied to NapaPilot81's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
thanks, downloaded for a wee look see. -
I guess most of you will have track IR. But even then do you use padlock views? eg to padlock to an aircraft(s) or incoming missile(s). I use a finger hat on throttle for view commands, up is map centre is cockpit, down is HUD only, which leaves right and left for missile and aircraft. Missile to target is also useful for checking kill, but not essential. But the question is what command do you use? I managed to get padlock to nearest aircraft but its out of the cockpit not hugely realistic. I guess another question would be what map view do you use? I tend to use fixed map rather than locked to aircraft, as the latter tends to be zoomed in too much and its a pain to zoom out when you are flying. Ideally it would switch upon repeat press of the button, I guess I could map zoom to a slider but still not ideal (eg for landing when you want to see taxi & parking).

Took some fire, splashed bandits and returned home. Lost a lot of control so slight mishap on landing, did 180 under braking and faced back to where I came, but still walking away from this one. nice skin, I used to have that pattern on a model aircraft. Where did you get it? nullBuzzing the tower & strip in Vegas

Looking for some advise on getting a mic, probably head wearable so can go with tracker. Maybe with speaker for realism on voice/radio comms. Have looked at a couple of cheap options and they should do the job, but was curious as to what other people are using and how they have set up. No looking for anything fancy or high end, just want to be able to speak (combine with a head tracker) and possibly have radio/voice in ear. I have a 3.1ch setup for PC audio so would want to continue using that for game sounds, separating radio comms into ear with headset. But may not want to split all voice comms, not sure if that is possible.

I also came to Winwing from Saitek (X-55). X-55 used to seem good but it was cheap plastic and I had issues with the cabling in the throttle and some issues with the stick. Some of the buttons on the throttle would not work if it was at or near 100% position. This was not ideal, got away with it in Elite Dangerous as it was a function that didnt matter if full throttle or not but still. Read up on it and just about everyone had problems. So I found out about Winwing and read reviews, videos all indicated quality was superb, plus the wiring connection is a lot better on the throttle! Plus adjustable detents etc. Superb. Also some some negative comments on here about quality and customer service but took the plunge and all going great.

Not sure if I follow you, but you can map these in key bindings like any of the other keys? Or were you meaning what do people use them for in specific aircraft? I have them mapped for some extra buttons eg RWR filter on SU-25T but not yet on F-14B. I don't have a head tracker yet but have the additional module on the stick with two extra hats, that provide POV and two axis movement. I guess if I were to go with tracker those buttons could be mapped for re-centre as this is similar to what the push button is now. When you use a head tracker I assume you cannot also have POV? Can you have movement axis to, say adjust base position - eg if you move your seat or monitor etc? @too-cool Btw I also have to say thanks, I did not realise it until now but I got your joystick layouts on a google search and use them to assist with visualising keymaps on each aircraft.

Yeah, saw your other post. I was appending to it Maybe a bit lazy with the quotations....
-
I'm meaning more you can't feel movement like you can in a real aircraft. We can only rely on visual cues to give us information about bank, vertical speed and so forth.

Thanks, yeah I should of mentioned the new drive will be a large NVMe SSD. I already have a smaller one for system and the other drive that is being done away with is also an HDD (WD raptor if you remember them!). I'm moving away from mechanical drives, especially for high performance but still good for large batch storage. DCS itself doesn't really care though?
-
Thanks for the quick replies, both have a similar response so I've included in same reply. There may not be a benefit to partitioning (there is one to me, which I will explain), but is there any detriment? The other software likes to be in the top level folder in the root directory. Also I have other folders and shortcuts to config files, saved data, supporting software, setup files and text notes to remind myself what is going on and where everything is etc. DCS could go in a renamed folder, but I may end up having associated shortcuts for it also and it could get messy. So the benefit to me is neatness. Just wondering if that neatness comes at a performance cost to DCS as then I would have to choose between hit to other software or keeping on separate disks.

I've seen comments that DCS should be on its own drive or partition and to me this makes sense. I have it on Drive C at the moment, but its folder is in the root directory. This is fine for trying out the game but I will be moving it to a dedicated drive as it is taking up a lot of space on drive C. Am going to buy a new large drive and the intention is to combine with another game, which is on its own dedicated drive so that both are on this new drive. The other game likes to be on a dedicated drive, or the first partition on a disk. So this would mean either have both on the same drive in their respective folders at root level, or have two partitions and DCS be on the second partition. The DCS partition will be at least 5-8 times larger than the first partition, depending on how much available space I get and leave unallocated/free. Does DCS care if it is on a second partition or does it want to be on the first? Does it prefer not to be on a partition? I could keep the other disk and have both separate but then I would need to lose a Sata slot due to PCI bandwidth sharing. Edit: forgot to say that the saved games folder will not be affected as it is not on drive C so will not go onto new drive.

Jumping on after a few months, so not sure if this is still needed (I have something else to comment so will try to be fast here before I forget). You can move all of the user directory onto a different drive. So then all of My documents, pictures, music and saved games (which are all system files) are located on this new drive under your user profile. Essentially you set up a separate storage drive to hold all of your data and you can put your user profiles onto that. You then have a smaller/faster drive for system/games/programmes. I realise this is slightly old fashioned, you generally don't need to have separate drives/partitions for games/programmes etc, especially as capacities have increased over the years and now with SSD's costs have really come down. But it is good to have all of your data on a separate drive that is backed up in case you lose your OS and/or system(/games/programmes) drive(s). All of your hidden files/folders are located on this directory automatically, including App data and again this can all be backed up for reinstall or moving to a new machine/system. I think with W10 onwards it has an option to do this but with W7 (and maybe XP can't quite remember) you had to do it during the time of install. On W7 you install in audit mode and setup the user profiles before going into OOBE (out of box experience). This is done by writing a short script to modify the registry to relocate the users profile directory(s) to the location you want. The script is executed in unattend mode by sysprep tool and this takes you towards finishing the installation (eg before loading any other drivers/software you want to do in audit mode). Its been a good few years since I did this so can't quite remember the workflow, but can provide instructions, batch file (or just text) if anyone wants to do it. I remember I had a few other specifics that added complexity to my install, but they may not apply to anyone else.

Its funny I see this written as I just noticed earlier that I seem to be flying the aircraft a bit like an airline pilot. This is after years and years of mostly airline sims. Nothing wrong with that I guess to learn an aircraft but its like unlearning good habits and returning to the things that got you into trouble in heavier/slower aircraft! But as you say can be very easy to get wrapped up in procedures, just fly. That said, maintaining steady turn rate can be quite difficult on a sim.
