Maverick seeker types...night targeting
RodBorza replied to ESzczesniak's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
The H model is good only for daytime operations. The D is the only good choice for night operations. Although they don't have a good resolution as the other models, if you look for targets with the TGP you won't have any problem locking them on. Also, as in the game we don't have problem with limited supplies, then you can carry Mav D's all the time. Two things you should know about Mav employment, if you don't already know: 1) After finding targets with TGP (make new SPI) and slaving all to the SPI, when at the MAV page, select TMS UP short. It helps the missile seeker to lock the targets; 2) After half an hour you will get a message on the MFCDs saying something like "EO timeout". In real life the MAV seeker would overheat, in the game, if I'm not mistaken, the capacity of lock on targets will be degraded (I must test it though). So, it is not good to keep the missiles on for more than you really need to. -
Ops, I saw that later. When I posted, then it was too late. Disregard, please.

He pulls up to the point when the solution cue (small circle) on the Azimuth Steerimg Line gets inside the CCRP circle; i.e.; the small circle inside the big one. When using CCRP at level flight, you must wait until the small circle drops inside the CCRP piper and hold the weapon release button. For what I could get from the video, he does the opposite; he takes the CCRP circle to meet with the solution cue on the ASL. And then, it bombs away and you not overflying the target. :D

Ha! Wagmatt is da man!

The next one? (please!)
-
Agreed!

Wow! 10 A-10's! Very nice!

The game doesn't allow two controls on one button. So, if you want to engage PAC, you have to hold the button assigned to it and the pull the trigger. Is what I do. For stationary targets, you use PAC. For convoys, infantry and anything that you want to maximum spread, then you use GUNARM.

To embed videos, you must go to advanced mode on the post. There is a link called Go Advanced at the bottom. You'll see that a headbar will open with new options, including embedding You Tube videos.

JDAMs thru' clouds w/JTAC: can you bomb "blind"?
RodBorza replied to Bahger's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
OutOnTheOp, Thanks for the inside information. Good to know that it can be done, altough with some constraints. Regarding the game, as you said, not sure it it's modelled. It remains to be tested (added to my To Do list :D) -
As much as I would like to see A-10s in action, I find that to be very unlikely. No US soldiers on the ground (officially , that is :detective_2:), no Hogs flying. Also, the US has other capable aircraft like the F-16 who can do CAS (not as good as the Hog), but the A-10s are better needed elsewhere, i.e., Afghanistan. And fo the distance, the Mediterranean is not that big and you always have in-flight-refueling.

JDAMs thru' clouds w/JTAC: can you bomb "blind"?
RodBorza replied to Bahger's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Good points. Lase guided from the ground... need to be tested. And Mk-84's are huge! -
Well, just imagtine that the enemy has a very high rate of replenishment. :D

JDAMs thru' clouds w/JTAC: can you bomb "blind"?
RodBorza replied to Bahger's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Yes, he does. Re-reading the report I noticed that he had to go below cloud cover and take the right coordinates with the TGP. And yes, lasing is totally impossible. That's why JDAMs were invented in the first place (AFAIK). But regarding the AAR, I think that if the JTAC gives you the coordinate, you would be able to insert it on the CDU or get the red triangle via data link. In any way it is possible to release the weapon over the cloud layer, but of course, you leave toomuch for chance since the coordinate is a approximation, may or may not be exactly on target. -
JDAMs thru' clouds w/JTAC: can you bomb "blind"?
RodBorza replied to Bahger's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Bagher, Maybe this helps. This guy was able to bomb through cloud cover, coordinates given by Marines on the ground. Read the After Action report here Part 1 starts at the bottom of the page.:joystick: -
Now, when you are piloting, you can press the red horn button as if you were engaging PAC-1. If the guy doesn't move, then you can always fire your imaginary GAU -8. :D

AI wingmen: What are they good for? A tip...
RodBorza replied to Bahger's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
+1! Nice tip. Helps a lot with Wingie survivability. -
Hah! Never noticed the mirrors. And congrats on the refueling attempt success.

Unguided bombs hit ground before reaching the target?!
RodBorza replied to rico's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Maybe two things: 1) you need more training (we all do); 2) Wind. You have to compensate for it. See this thread: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=66422&highlight=wind+correct Cheers! -
I don't know if what you are saying is based on old aircraft videos, but old types had a different engine (turbojet) with different fuels. That's why they burned a black smoke. Today's turbofans are "smokeless" in a sense.

You can go the easy way or the advanced way, as I call it: it depends on your preference and proficiency. Nomdeplume gave you a link for what I see as a advanced method of inputing coordinates directly on the CDU. It is good once you understand the military grid reference system (MGRS) and when the link from JTAc is not available on the mission or not working due to some bugs. Apart from that, the easy way, which is a feature not a cheat, is as follows: 1) Set frequency to JTAC radio; 2) Check in; 3) Copy and receive 9 -line; And after that, this is where most of people get lost. 4) Go back to JTAC radio menu and choose 9 - line readback; Talk the readback; 5) You will receive a message in the data link and a red triangle will appear on the TAD page; 6) Click WILCO on the OSB 19 on the TAD page; 7) Hook the Red Triangle with TMS Up Short and then make it your SPI with TMS UP Long; 8) Slave all to SPI with China Hat Forward Long; 9) Ckeck in the TGP if the target is the one desired; 10) Change to MAV page; 11) Send MAVs as needed :D. Actually, steps 8-10 are not necessary, once you've given the JTAC message via datalink, you are good to go. Only keep in mind that you must respect what the JTAC asks you, if he says MAVs, then it is MAVs, not cannon, etc. A good trick is to maintain the cannon on SAFE while doing this, because it avoids unnecessary or accidental shooting. Otherwise you'll be reprimanded (receiving the infamous "Abort!Abort! Abort!" message).

Geskes, Just checking: do you mean, in the game? Release version? If that does happen, then it is another one on my list of ED's nice attention to details.
-
Rel, To be honest with you I only tested it on the Betas, to be exact on Beta 4. if you left the Mav on for too long, you would get a message on the MFCDs, as per my last post. On the release version, haven't noticed yet (I'm away from my DCS A-10 right now... cant' play ... ahhhhrgghh.. the Warthog level in my blood is very low at this moment...). When I get back, it is something that I'll have to test.

Mav targeting - is there a way to.....
RodBorza replied to jason_peters's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
What StrongHarm said plus what Pikey said. Trying to find AND identifying them with the MAV seeker is very difficult. Carry the TGP at all times. It is the... aham... "radar" of the A-10. For good instructions on TGP use, see this nice video from ExcessiveHeadspace on You Tube: -
Everything what StrongHarm said plus: 1) You don't need to do everything by yourself. Under the "10. Other" radio options you have a lot of flights that are available to help you, as SEAD and CAP. Call them if you are having trouble with enemy SAMs and aircrafts; 2) The JTAC is your friend. Learn how to contact him and to handle the 9 line briefing and so on. There's lots of threads and posts telling how to do this. Also, if you do a search for it on You Tube you'll find that some very nice people out there did some very nice videos on how to use JTAC. It is really easy after awhile. Regarding the ATC, it is broken on this game. Gives very few information. Regardless, I believe you are not being able to contact the ATC prior to start-up because your radios are not on. I believe you'll have to turn ground power first in order to have the radios working properly prior to ask for start-up clearence. See this nice video from our friend Dragon on You Tube: Also, check if you are using the right comms options on the game settings. If you are using easy comms the way to contact is by hitting the "\" key. If you are using the realistic comms, then follow Warrior X guide. Well, this sim is not an easy one to learn. Read, read, read, ask, ask, ask, (and please, search, search search for what you are looking for before you ask) and train. The learning curve is steep, long but in the end, very satisfying.
