For the A-10 I don't see much valeu on NOE operation, since it is usually supported by a number of other specialized flights. In the game, in the Georgia Hammer and The Shore campaigns most of time you stay high, picking targets with the TGP. The only time I've descended to the deck was when the occasional Mig-29 would show up and the CAP flights were not in the area. I think the value of NOE is much higher for deepo strike aircraft, like the F-15E (the next DCS module... er.. I hope...:music_whistling:)

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I have a question on air burst bombs. How is their blast cone shaped? It is downward shaped? It is a semi-sphere? I'm asking this because I'm interested on making an air burst mod, simulating DSU-33's operation. I don't know yet if that's even possible within game, just doing some studies first.

+1! Good idea. Must not be that difficult to implement.

To have that kind of view you need to have Track IR. If you don't have it, it's either by using a joystick with a hat for vision and zomm in and zoom out, or using keyboard shortcuts.

Be it on Easy or Real Comms, either way, you'll need to set the radio frequency to the JTAC frequency. Look at the pre-flight briefing and take note of the frequency. Usually JTAc respond on the AM VHF Radio, the third one top to bottom. And usually his frequency is 131.00 Mhz, but that depends on the mission. Anyway, set frequency, call up the JTAC menu and check in. It takes him a while to respond, but if you are at the right frequency and everything, wait about 20 seconds and them he answers you. If he doesn't answer after this time, then you must be doing something wrong. To help you out, look at these videos: Part 1: Part 2: Part 3:

AFAIK is is possible with thsrottle only if you have the Thrustmaster Warthog. To move the throttles from OFF to idle the buttons are RAlt+home (Lef engine) and Rcrtl+Home (right engine).

It will run, but it will be very limited. My current system specs are: Intel Duo Core @ 1.33 Ghz 2 GB Ram ATI HD 4550. Well, it does run, but the graphics and everything is on low. The only setting set to high is textures, otherwise I wouldn't be able to read antything on the cockpit. But the game has lots of stutters and crashes, and the loading times are really long. And this happens not because of a low quality software, but because my system can't handle it. I have Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2, Splinter Cell Conviction and all of them run nicely, but this sim needs more computing power. And seeing the videos on YouTube from other people with better systems, I know the game can be much better than what I currently have. I tried to install Win 7 64 and the performance improved a bit, but still needs an upgrade on the hardware. Right now, I'm saving to buy more run (at least more 6 GB) and a ATI 6850. So, upgrade first, and you'll have a much better experience. And also, get yourself a Track IR. It will be worth it.

A question about markpoints and creating flightplan.
RodBorza replied to bloomstomb's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Hmm..interesting. :smartass: Makes sense, because what you broadcast is the SPI, independently of it being a steerpoint, Markpoint or any point in space. Thepeople who work in the defense industry are clever (err... not all of them, but anyway... :D) -

Sorry, I dindt' see this post before writing my previous post. The answer is: nope, you are not doing anything wrong. What happens is the following: 1) You change Markpoints and the TGP and MAV follows; that's ok. EDIT: The MAV will follow only if you do a China Hat Forward (slave all to SPI) first. 2) But when MAV is SOI and when you lock the Maverick, the MAV will NO longer be tracking a Markpoint, but its own target. That's why it won't follow the Mark points anymore; 3) So, everytime you fire a MAV, yes, you do have to China Hat Forward Long, select the HUD as SOI, change Markpoint, select MAV as SOI, Track, lock, Fire...and do it all again... :joystick: If you want to shorten the way, you can use the rocker button on the UFC to select Markpoints, if you like. 4) There's no easier way as I know of. This happens because of the nature of the Maverick, that once locked in a target will track the target, not the Markpoints. If you really think about it, it will make sense...I hope :D. See previous post links on Maverick and markpoints discussion. EDIT: When the MAv tracks a target, it breaks the slave mode. -
A question about markpoints and creating flightplan.
RodBorza replied to bloomstomb's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
The whole point of using Markpoints is to NOT use create a flight plan just to attack targets. People do that as a matter of personal preference. I, for one, like to use Markpoints pure and simple. No messing around with the CDU when attacking targets. Some guys like to create flightplans for that; whatever works best for each one. So, a little walktrough would be as follow: (Notice: This is MY way of doing things. There's not the right or wrong way, as I said before, it is a matter of personal preference). 0) Trim the aircraft; level or bank it in a holding pattern and set AutoPilot to Hold at a safe altitude (10k+ will do it); 1) Set TGP on the right MFCD and TAd on the Left MFCD; 2) Make TGP Sensor of Interest (SOI) by selecting it again or holding coolie hat right long; 3) Find target and: 3.1) Use TMS right short to create a Mark point on it; or 3.2) Lase the target; 3.3) Use TMS right short to create a Mark point on it, with increased accuracy (look for ExcessiveHeadspace excellent video on how to use the TGP on You Tube); 4) Repeat the same for the other two targets; 5) On the Up Front Controller Hit Func and 8 (Mark) to switch to Markpoints. 6) Ta-daaa!!! You can see on the TAD the Mark points you created. Also on the HUD, instead of seeing Waypoints names, you will see Mark A; B; C, etc... 7) Now comes the beautiful part of using mark points. Set the HUD as SOI, by making coolie hat up long; 8 ) With DMS Up or Down Short you can change Markpoints; and the beauty of all this is that the TGP will automatically follow the mark points position. And in case you were wondering, yep, that works for MAVs too! 9) That's it. Now you can select bombs; mavericks, rockets, guns wahtever and proceed to attack. It seems a lot of things to remember, but with time all of this comes automatically. Ya know, I wrote all this from the top of my head, not even having to look at the manual or something. (beware: this is the kind of post DCS effect you can have afetr excessive A-10 playing). Following are some links that proved to be very helpful. Excessive Headspace TGP video (I thought of making you look for it, but since I'm a nice guy, here's the link): Excessive Headspace Multiple JDAM Drop Guide video: Chrisaky Markpoints Tutorial video: Long, soewaht boring, but really helpful discussion on how to use markpoints to fire Mavs and how to do it: See my posts on this page: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=72185&page=3 and this page: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=72185&page=6 and this page: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=72185&page=7 The rests of the posts are interesting, but it may confuse ya (if not already :D). Good luck and good hunting! -
Ops, sorry man. I totally missed the fact that SEAD still had to finish its job. I am a heavy user of support flights and I should have noticed that. Well, this is the problem with the whole "sportscaster experience": not knowing what the other previously had tested and experimented with before. About the wingies AI, you are right: they do attack the first thing they see, not that smart to attack this or that column. But, you may have given the answer right there: "I also probably could have told them to attack the left side from the south or something...." Maybe, this will make a difference, so wingmen may attack the desired columns. Something to be tested in the future. Well, I understand. Even when wingmen have bombs or MAVs left, it is good to try and use that big gun. I think that crew chiefs would give the pilots a frown if they ever come back with the munition drum full. :D But you were right, too dark, and not being able to use NVGs, with the sun setting on one side and shadows on the other. But, nice tactics. This game is challenging and sometimes I have the impression they gave you more than what the A-10 can chew. But learning, exchanging ideas, trying different things, it is all part of the fun.

Zamboni, Man, thanks for uploading another great video. Very high def, well executed, good flight management (ok, apart from #3, where did he got his flying license???) and nice line-up on the bombing run! (Eleven tanks in a row is no small feat).:smilewink: Well, I would like to make what I believe to be a constructive critic. I know, I know, it is easy to talk about after everything is said and done, but I think it will help you, me and all others in the future: 1) From 27:36 to 28:50 on your video, I think you lost too much time looking at/for the targets. I know, decision making when confronted with a previously unseen situation is very difficult. Anyway, I believe that for the future, when facing 6(!) columns as you were facing you could send #2 after air defenses, #3 and #4 after the two columns on the left (or right, whatever) and you firing a MAV at the point tanks at each remaining column when in range. And doing that fast, not giving the chance of them going line abreast. This way I think you could stop the columns and cause general confusion. Also, the AI wingmen although not very intelligent on their use of Mavericks, since they will spend them all in one pass and not just one on the point vehicle, but at least they would destroy their assigned tanks and that would be two less columns to worry about. I think that after this it would be just a matter of releasing CBUs on a bunch of sitting ducks. I know it is easier said than done, since enemy behavior is not always what we expect to be, but I think that would be a valid tactic to stall the enemy and get the remaining 25% of the goals in the mission. I believe that mission goals in this particular case had to do with tanks crossing a pre-determined line in the map. Although you got them all destroyed, they've kept moving and already had reached their pre-set objectives when you got to them. 2) From 48:00-48:25 - Your gun run on BMPs. Regarding gun usage I agree with cobrabase when he says that tanks are too tough to destroy in this game. But, and you assumed right, BMPs are not a match for the gun. However, you really need to get up close and personal when using the GAU-8. I think you fired from too afar, when the range circle was about the 12'o clock to 11 o'clock position. For soft skinned targets you need to fire it when the range circle is at the 9 o'clock to 6 o'clock position. This way you have better chance of concentrating fire in a single point. In your run although you had the piper right on target, you can see in the TGP screen that the shots were too far spread out (you can see the secondary explosions all around the target, but not on it, unfortunately). :( And I really don't know how you were able to see it in the dark, but congrats on that. I really would like that the gun piper would not obscure the TGP diamond. That would be a really great help on gun runs.:D Well, that's it. I feel like the sports newscaster who has just sitted through a game and now has all the right solutions and answers AFTER the game has been played, but the intention is to help and exchange ideas. See you around and maybe someday we can multiplayer togheter. P.S.: And I really hope that the helicopter pilots to be alive and well.

Epic patch indeed! hand Brakes? Dynamic Shadows? Wow, just wow. The attention to detail is what sets ED apart from other developers.
-
Wow, it's preliminary, but seems an entirely new game. Again, ED has showed great customer support. Thanks Wags and team!

Moonshim, Sorry, but I couldn't resist. :D I love this game, have read the manual and etc. But sometimes I am surprised by the amount of things that you can do with the features modeled in this sim. Sometimes someone says that discovered this or that on the CDU and then I ask myself: "How the heck they find this?" Then I remember that when I read about it, I skiped most of the pages... Trying to learn in a rush. No so good...
-
LOL. True. Some guys actually read the manual. :megalol: But anyway. messing around with the ME is fun. :joystick:

I believe Paulriiki would be very proud of the second video.

Two words: VTOL LOL.

Yes, my doubt is that if it is possible to start the mission with the A-10 on the deck of the carrier, ready to take-off. I think that would be much easier than landing on it carefully enough not to blow the tires and then trying to take off again. But I don't know if the Mission Editor allows it. Anyway, to give you some ideas, look at these videos of ths guy landing the A-10 with a 100 kts headwing. It lands, takes offand hovers like a Black Shark. Very funny stuff:
-
Wow...another good info. The TAD map gets too clutteredwith red triangle sometimes.

Cannot help with the first one, but can with the other two: Question 2) Answer: Read the manual, do the Instant Action - East Georgia Spring - Easy mission. Destroy the trucks. Quit. Read the manual how to engage with rockets and bombs. Get back to the mission. Attack the Trucks. Proceed to the trucks plus infantry. Quit. read the manual how to attack with LGB's. And...well..you got it. This is how I learned. Doing that mission a 50+ times and reading the manual as doubts arised. It took me a lot of time, but in the end it was worth the effort. 3) If I undesrtood your question right, you have to "pull the knob" on the backup ADI. Put your mouse over it, you'll get a simbol of two curved arrows around it. Then, it's a matter of scrolling down with the mouse wheel. You'll see that the ADI will come to center and the knob will be released.
-
+1! Nice landing. Just curious to see if you can do two things: 1) Set up a mission with an A-20 sitting on the deck of a carrier;;) 2) Obviously, if it is possible to take off from it.
-
Yes, you cann. apparently no problems fo r the campaign. See this tread: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=73194 Zamboni says the following right at the first post:

LOL. That's true! I thought it was just me. :megalol:
