Everything what StrongHarm said plus: 1) You don't need to do everything by yourself. Under the "10. Other" radio options you have a lot of flights that are available to help you, as SEAD and CAP. Call them if you are having trouble with enemy SAMs and aircrafts; 2) The JTAC is your friend. Learn how to contact him and to handle the 9 line briefing and so on. There's lots of threads and posts telling how to do this. Also, if you do a search for it on You Tube you'll find that some very nice people out there did some very nice videos on how to use JTAC. It is really easy after awhile. Regarding the ATC, it is broken on this game. Gives very few information. Regardless, I believe you are not being able to contact the ATC prior to start-up because your radios are not on. I believe you'll have to turn ground power first in order to have the radios working properly prior to ask for start-up clearence. See this nice video from our friend Dragon on You Tube: Also, check if you are using the right comms options on the game settings. If you are using easy comms the way to contact is by hitting the "\" key. If you are using the realistic comms, then follow Warrior X guide. Well, this sim is not an easy one to learn. Read, read, read, ask, ask, ask, (and please, search, search search for what you are looking for before you ask) and train. The learning curve is steep, long but in the end, very satisfying.

Yep, that's what i'm talking about. The ability to check out with JTAc and check in with AWACS and the downed pilot. Sometimes, we get back home with ordnance still hanging on the aircraft while a friendly is out there without cover. And yes, the ability to call CSAR when YOU are the one shot down, would be great too. Well, wishiful thinking...

I don't know if it was discussed before, it it already was, please lead me to the right thread. Also, if it's already modeled, please tell me how to do it in game. Anyway, sometimes we hear over the radio that a pilot has been shutdown while you are in a mission. It would be nice to have an option under the "10. Other..." radio option so we could talk to the downed pilot. Also, to talk to other inbound units as Jolly Greens coming to the rescue. Real A-10 pilots do that FAC/CSAR coordination missions (which are really dificult to coordinate everybody) and I wish we could do as well on the fly (not only a specific mission created with the Mission Editor). All because I feel bad for the (virtual) pilot downed and not being able do anything about it. (and yes, looking for a way to get some medals :D).

LOL. Nice depiction of the Ka-50 on your avatar!

Hey man, nice find! It's already on my Amazon wish list. In midst of "thousands" of books written on Iraq and Afeghanistan theaters, it's nice to find one with 5 stars of approval by most of the readers.

Good video. Sometimes there I thought I was looking the sim TGP video. It only made me see how much the sim is very well modelled. For me, with current technology, it is acceptable. Well, the explosions really are big. Interesting to see how the FLIR image is washed out by the explosions. I wonder what 2000 pounder is like... About the man being hit by a bomb. Somebody said that depending on what you are carrying and the threat level, it's better to let a bomb go than risk a strafing run. In the SimHQ there's a nice article of A-10's operations over Kosovo, and in one passage the pilot says that he engaged an ammo truck with a Maverick. What seems to be a waste, in real life avoided that the pilot getting too close to AAA's in the area. Very good reading. The article can be seen here: http://www.simhq.com/_air/air_050a.html :joystick:

About changing the approach to the target area, I only do that when the JTAC asks for a specific direction. But when he does so is when everything is already calm and you can do your job easily. However, everytime I see a "29" spike on my RWR, it doesn't matter where I am: it's time to head for the deck and back to friendly territory.
-
Depends on the mission really, but in the Georgia Hammer's campaign as far as I can recall, the flights are replaced from time to time. If you take a look with the F6 key, everytime you'll hear "Airborne" a flight is leaving the carrier stationed on the Black Sea. Very neat details! Regarding the strategy part, be aware of the radio Guard channel and the TAD. You are doing it right to call up SEAD before you go in, since they will do a good job of cleaning the way ahead of you. It is particulary important if can't get to target area and/or your RWR is filled with enemy radar spikes. Get out, go over friendly territory, call up SEAD and watch the fireworks. Confirm if the RWR spikes are greatly diminished and get in and do your job. For CAP flights it is good to hear what the AWACS is saying. If he/she says something like "Bogey, 350, 40@ 16,000, hot" it is when I call the CAP. They will come over you following your waypoints. Listen for it, since they'll call out the waypoint they are passing through. An enemy 40 nm away seems pretty far, however they are fast, and the CAP takes sometime to go through all the waypoints before they detect the enemy aircraft. Once they are in range they'll engage. Yet again, listen for the calls over the radio ("Dodge flight, fox 1/ Dodge 1, Splash 1!). And last but not least look at the TAD. The TAD gives you very important info on the location of friendly planes, and in the case of SEAD, their SPIs will be shown so you can have a safe idea where they are attacking. Helps a lot with Situational Awareness.

"Ok, here's the deal... I show you where the wreckage is and you can take it and give it to the press. Me? show me the nearest UAZ so I can drive home." :D
-
Well, I don't think JTAC works with the wingie as the way it does for us. So, it's better to mark your SPI, broadcast it to the wingman. Tell him to attack the same kind of target with the same weapon as requested for by the JTAC (e.g. Mavericks on Tanks). then let him do his job. It's working this way for me, however, the wingie also has the bad habit of destroying more targets than you wanted him to. (e.g. 1 tank, but he goes and destroy all 3, spending valuable Mavs).

how does flight model compare to Real Life?
RodBorza replied to hannibal's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Yep, I agree. An Israeli F-15 was able to fly and land missing one wing, due to the wide body area. -

LOL. Without wings, steady as she goes... -
Good answer, very well explained. Haven't played the release yet, but on the Betas if the situation was very heavy, I would get back to friendly territory and call the SEAD flights available. Once things got calm on my RWR, then I went to target area.

+1! Great idea. IR strobe lights to be seen through NVG's... (hmmmm...donuts...)

how does flight model compare to Real Life?

If you take a look at Wikipedia (not the most reliable source of info, I know...), but there states that the Su-25T and the A-10 have somewhat similar characteristics: Loaded weight: A-10 - 47,094 lb (21,361 kg) Su-25T - 16,990 kg (37,456 lb) Engine thrust: A-10 - 9,065 lbf (40.32 kN) each Su-25T - 9,480 lbf (44.18 kN) each However there is one significant difference: Wing area: A-10 - 47.0 m2 (506 ft2);) Su-25T - 30.1 m2; (324 ft2) So, what that means? Means that considering ED has a good amount of technical knowledge on the airplanes they work with it, so the flight model must be pretty accurate. Also, mathematical flight models for U.S. planes are not that difficult to obtain, since many are featured in the specialized literature (mostly for 70's aircaft like A-10s and F-16s), so you have to believe that the models are pretty acurate. So, all in all, plane by plane, what I think that occurs that you feel the Su-25T heavier than the A-10, boils down to wing area. With a larger area, the A-10 has more lift (but also a littles bit more of drag). So for the same weight, the wings on the A-10 help it fly and take the load off of the engines a bit. The Su-25T with its swept wings has more speed, but on the down side is not as maneuverable at low speed as the A-10. If you look at gliders, they do have a large straight wing, which allows them to maneuver at low speeds with a small (or no) engine. I think that was the philosophy behind the A-10, so that's why you feel it to be lighter than the Su-25T. EDIT: And oh yeah, if you try to fly the A-10 with a whole load of GBU's under its belly, you'll feel the weight alright. -
Your Google-Fu is strong, Viper-one. We shall surrender. :D
-
That's a whole lot a load you gotta there. But once air dominance is established, then I think it's feasible.

Thanks ED! Nice job!

JTAC target i/d and designation tutorial movie
RodBorza replied to Bahger's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Very nice video. I was wondering if an OA-10 could be implemented. I even post is as a feature on the Wish List. Hope we can do ths in Multiplayer someday. Maybe now since the patch is out, we can. -
Nice flying! Those Su-33 really are BIG! Putting an F-18 is something, but with a Su-33 must be entirely different.

Tyger, I understand what you are saying, that's way I stress the fact that it SHOULD be an option, not compulsory in any way. For those of us who like it to be to the letter. Not that I want to take the 'fun' out of it, but I agree with Eddie when he says that "some of us are used to doing things differently, and continue to do it because we enjoy it". I also play the Silent Hunter series of games, which are simulations from WWII submarines. In those games you have the ability to change the level of realism that you want/need to make the game more fun. You can play totally arcadey or up to 105%(!) realism. No need to punch oneself to the face or crash out of the chair, but adding limitations to your boat/plane makes me be more aware of tactics, infiltration and exfiltration routes and weapons usage. For me this adds to the fun, makes me better and better at sailing or flying. That's a good idea. Never made a mod before, but for those who want it, they could grab it. Well, TGP problems would be just nice. Fire one Mav, and you would get that not very welcomed warning saying: "TGP fail" Per the forums I had misunterstood what kind of tire damage there it would be. I thought that once you fired the MAV, the tires would instantaneously blow. If that's not the case, then my virtual crew chief will not be too happy, but I can shut him down anytime. Yep, I agree. I like to have fun, but realistic is the way to go for me. I don't like the magic "respawn"/rearm thing. And I was used too to the campaigns limitations on Jane's F-15 and Falcon: AF. On JF-15, in Iran campaign, there were missions that you had to fly without a LANTIRN pod. Very limited indeed. So, you had to learn creative new ways to use radar and the Mk I Eyeballs.

Yep. I ran the Betas in a Duo Core 2 1.6 Ghz, ATI 4770 and 2 GB Ram, all in Win 7 32 bits. It's amaze me that a game so comlex can run in my rig, however it is in all minimum settings, with the exceptions of high textures. I'm willing to change my Win 7 to 64 bit, add more run (at least 2 Gb more) and changing the video card. Any suggestions?
