I've been having wingman problems too having recently starting playing through the Deployment KA-50 campaign on the latest DCS:World (I only had ever played the first few missions on the legacy BS2 standalone product). The 'Dusk' mission in the campaign it was particularly noticable, with my wingman either refusing to engage with an 'unable or negative' or confirming engagement but ending up flying off looping around the area not firing a shot. I thought I was doing something wrong in the Datalink or targeting so went back to the interactive training, but even in that if you ask Wingman 4 to engage datalink targets it shows similar behaviour (for me atleast). Try the Dusk mission in the KA-50 Deployment campaign on the current DCS:World... Part of the problem I think is the wingman not reporting on his current status, if he has to break off or reject an order it would be nice to understand why. If he cannot complete an order or appears stuck then it would be nice to ask him to report on his status and clear whatever commands he has queued. Its almost as if the AI conflicts with itself then can't act on new attack orders.

On the other side mission help
BigBANGtheory replied to Kenetic's topic in User Created Missions General
I was struggling with this mission too, its a sizable jump in challenge from the previous missions IMHO. So the key for me was finding a way to take out both Hinds, which are tough brutes... by switching to Vikhr missile salvo's i.e. fire x2 Vikhrs almost together to take one Hind out quick then switch to the next. By all means use your wingmen to help but I think they are bugged for A-A combat and at best act as a distraction. The other important point to note is make use of time acceleration for this mission, its not fun to repeat the take-off to Ingres point time and again. -
Thanks for that Yurgon. FYI if yu read through this thread you can see BS1 owners discussing the track as demo that I assume came with the installation: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=37178 I'd like to see the control inputs for some of these maneuvers if possible ideally in BS2 but I'd settle for YouTube if some kind soul has the time.

I had this problem yesterday too (funnily enough trying to access the 74th's server ), around 2pm GMT I gave up in the end. I too had TrIR5 running, and had been running DCS:W MP fine the previous day.

I was hoping to replay and learn from the 'airshow tracks' mentioned by owners of Black Shark 1, but I only own BS2... I'm aware there are track incompatibilities between the two versions but is anyone aware of something similar having been ported to BS2 or uploaded into video (like the training missions but with the input controls visible)? thanks...

That's pretty damn impressive thanks for sharing. As odd as it may seem I can't wait to fly the KA-50 from Nellis to Creech at low altitude...

Hi guys I could do with a little advice/opinions on a using multi-monitor setup... In BS2 I have three screens working with the option of spanning the view across all three or splitting the Shkval and Abris onto the two side screens using different options files... The issue I am struggling with is the effect I am seeing on the side monitors when spanning the cockpit view across all three screens in combination with TrackIR input. To cut a long story short it looks like the horizon is tilted downwards at the sides when you look off the center monitor. Can I compensate for this somehow? (obviously not wanting to tilt the screens at the side physically)

The 74th VFS gave me the best advice to date on this based on 3 simple rules: 1. Fly with the control indicator on. 2. Learn what the AP dampening channels etc all do. 3. Experiment with the options, find a system you like then stick to it. For me personally it took about 6hrs of virtual flying to decide how and when to use the different options, which for the most part is 'All Channels ON/FD ON' unless I'm hovering or focusing on some other task.

I think I speak for most BS pilots by saying, that looks pretty damn good. Does it screw into the TM Warthog base? ;)

Great post. As you say its the stationary or near stationary wobble that is the main issue with FTNoIR if that could be addressed it would be a big step forward because pause/unpause doesn't cut it. What you can do to help though is loose the zoom axis (or increase its deadzone) for FTNoIR and map that elsewhere. TrackIR doesn't really have the wobble problem, though its not perfect either it can lose tracking from time to time (solved by a re-center Hotas mapped button).

I was in your Duxford workshop last week as a visitor and was wondering about the next DCS module.... If memory serves this is the Mustang with British Rolls Royce engine powering it, a good choice from WWII I'd say. Will the ED team be modelling WWII targets and terrain then? I assume bomber escort missions over Europe are going to be high on the list.

I finally got around to using my 2nd monitor (19" 1280x1024) and successfuly got the Shkval and ABRIS being displayed, but I would like to ask the more experienced pilots.... ...is it better to use more of the display for the Shkval or the ABRIS? Obviously its a balance but would you recommended 50/50 or 65/35 split based on how useful it is to see detail?

Two suggestions from a novice/fan of DCS
BigBANGtheory replied to BigBANGtheory's topic in DCS Wishlist
I'm only going on what the tour guide at Duxford said, citing the example of the yellow painted belly and strips on the side of a plane on display in the main Air Space exhibition. Perhaps it is something that used to be practiced by the RAF but no longer... I don't know I don't claim to be an expert on such things, but the principle of identifying yourself to others in MP or training as a novice pilot seems reasonable. -
Two suggestions from a novice/fan of DCS
BigBANGtheory replied to BigBANGtheory's topic in DCS Wishlist
#2 is point of realism, particularly in Multi-player. The use of Yellow is to indicate to other pilots that you are a novice and that there is a reasonable chance of collision, crashing missue of lights, flares or weapons essentially putting you at risk by being in close proximity. -
Yeah so two suggestions from someone who loves DCS but new to the series.... (appologies if covered elsewhere). 1. A flight recorder application or feature that logs flight time regardless of profiles, single player and multiplayer experience. Essentially something that gives new pilots a feeling of progress and something they can demonstrate to others e.g. virtual flying wings. 2. Skining of the aircraft pattern or texture with a significant amount of Yellow for novice pilots. This was inspired by a recent trip and subsequent education to Duxford, Cambs UK. :book:

I have a similair setup for my TM Warthog, a few tips I learnt on the way: 1. You need an extension on the handle which allows you to offset the handle by atleast 10 degrees, otherwise your wrist is going to hurt. 2. If you do not have a cut out in your seat then you really need some way of bringing the handle closer to your body. 3. The plastic end-cap for the waste pipe flexes, I found it better to use a hard material inserted into the pipe as this was more rigid. 4. The base of the pipe wobbles a little, it has to be secured somehow you can't leave it free. 5. Your floor may not be perfectly flat which may also introduce some stability issues, so I think it needs to be mounted on a base with rubber feet.
-
I sometimes have this problem but practice helps a lot. I trim forward about 1 diamond on the CTRL+ENTER input window and then look out at a 10-11 o'clock angle to get a feel for the movement. Then slowly raise collective and make very small inputs to the cyclic and pedals, if all is well a bit more collective up to 5m, then bring up the landing gear and engage auto hover. It probably took me 10+ attempts before I started to get it right. The trick is small inputs to stabilise and using a trim method that you are happy with and understand. Personally I fly the KA-50 with more subtle input being used on the controls than relying on trim and autopilot too much, I find I get a better feel for things if I over use trim then I always end up fighting it.

Kinect PC is coming. Bye bye TrackIR?

any sign of decent applications yet, or is it still SDK and hardware buzz? -
A-10C takes SimHQ best commercial flight sim award
BigBANGtheory replied to Wags's topic in Community News
I have to say after flying with the 74ths BS2 training session last night I totally agree and finally get it. A-10C bought me to DCS and back to my first flight sim since 1995! However now I have experienced some BS2 there's a lot to like even when rated alongside A-10C :) they are both gems. Well done guys, I think you have a good future. -
BS2 - Open Workshop - 06/01/12 - 2000hrs
BigBANGtheory replied to Heli Shed's topic in Community News
It was a great idea, that was better than great when you were actually in it and participating. The results speak for themselves a 3hr session which (for those that wanted and could) ended up closer to 6hrs for most people simply because it was too good an oppourtunity to miss. Did I learn anything? This is how my BS2 week has been... Monday : See Tygers community invitation for BS2 Training with the 74th's, then quickly realise that if I'm ever going to fly the KA-50 this is as good as it gets so I sign up. Tuesday : PANIC... Despite owning BS2 for a few months I know next to nothing and have little to no flight experience with the KA-50. I need to do something fast. So I jump onto You Tube and find the 'leading edge training videos for BS manual start' and start to learn. Wednesday : After a few hours later and some note taking I can manually start the KA-50 unaided and in doing so have basically learnt the layout of the cockpit. PANIC... ok I can start but I haven't flown yet! Also figured out how to map TeamSpeak PTT to HOTAS as well as TrIR centering. Thursday : Read the BS2 QuickStart guide on the train on the way to work and watch some cached YouTube training clips <get some strange looks> Friday : Its 7:45pm <gulp>, how do you join a MP server and why is BS2 asking me to login to a master server before I even see a server list? Yikes! but get it sorted whilst we have some introductions, I must have set it up when I installed the game. So got the game up and running and setup the LiveStream connection on my laptop next to me whilst leaving my PC to handle BS2. WoW how many KA-50's? Anyhow through Tygers professional quality training I tried trimming, hovering, hammerheads, break 180, funneling and landing... I got some of it right, I crashed lots <wasn't a problem> and had a great time. I'm still a beginner but I now know 1000% more than I did, I now have some flight experience and as a result have got so much more out of BS2 than 1 week ago. I made some notes and have taken away some homework to practice, its clear to me that the Navigation workshop is currently beyond my flight skills BUT I have something to aim for. Given a chance I would do this workshop again, and for anyone that is even remotely interested I would encourage you to join the LiveStream video so you can at least observe even if you don't want to fly. If a total newbie to BS2 like me can join in and fly in the workshop then anyone can. Big thanks to Tyger for your efforts and patience... (and appologies to the chap I flew into on the taxi way whilst trying to hover :joystick:) -

That sounds fantastic Tyger, I'll see if I can get an exit visa from the misses for Friday. -
Kinect PC is coming. Bye bye TrackIR?
BigBANGtheory replied to WynnTTr's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
...and when you play Dance Central :megalol: do you ever feel Kinect isn't tracking your swagger too well? It may well be the future but I haven't seen it work well yet nor have I seen anything but peoples experiments targeted for people over the age of 18. TrackIR is not dead until Kinect actually delivers what it promises to the public, maybe thats coming in the next few months maybe not. The point is to say TrackIR is now dead is utter rubbish with bad odour and flies. You might as well say Xbox is dead because a new model is due to be announced next year. -

First things fist, I see a load of hype but nothing tangible atm. xbox kinect is a year old now, where are all the cool games promised? Star Wars... did you see the demo vid in June... it looked terrible. I like the idea of kinect but I'll believe it when I see it living upto the hype. -
Now pedestal mounted to a height 10mm below my desk to allow it to be stored away and used centrally between ones legs with a normal office chair: http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=60341&stc=1&d=1324289629
