OR can't zoom, or you can't lean towards the instrument to zoom?
-
Yes but you're neglecting the obvious point that in real life you can see your hand and when you can't (or choose not to) you have touch sense. Reaching for a mouse breaks that too much imho.
-
Well say you are right handed and have a central mounted stick you're going to have to take your right hand off the stick and rummage around for a mouse blindly before interacting with the cockpit control and then returning your hand back to the stick each and every time. Voice command could work nicely for radio messages I can see that be a solution. Mouse sounds immersion breaking to me I don't think using a mouse in VR is going to work well but in all fairness I haven't tried it so I could be wrong. Some external controller strapped to the side of your throttle might do it... a twist-able, directional, press-able knob of some kind? but if the data gloves are reasonably priced that is a possibility too. Perhaps something along the lines used for in car entertainment systems?

I am still struggling to see how the "laser pointer" analogy would work in practice with an interactive cockpit. Are you suggesting you point your head at the cockpit control guiding a pointer then map a HOTAS switch to change its setting? Until Oculus integrates hand tracking I think you're going to need external hand tracking like the Manus Machina Data Gloves for either VR system. That would work inside the cockpit too seeing the pilots hands on the stick and throttle most of the time but then tacking to the other controls as guided by the player.

How can I mount collective to Office chair?
BigBANGtheory replied to Cowboy10uk's topic in Home Cockpits
If you have an old office chair (like me) and don't mind some experimenting you can modify it quite a bit. For example the leather material is usually stretched over a foam cushion on a ply wood base, so if you un-tac the leather you can hacksaw into the foam/base and then reattach the leather. This will give you a cutout for a pedestal mounted joystick or some other solution. You might be thinking "but if I remove a central cut-out on the base won't the chair be unconformable for normal use?" Honestly its not a problem even with your legs together there is enough support either side of the cut out. What surprises me is that non of these gaming chairs offer this cut out option which would be the n0.1 reason for me buying a gaming chair vs. any other office chair at half the price. -
Activation key for A10C beta owners.
BigBANGtheory replied to Mizzy's topic in Payment and Activation
Support sorted me out so good to go now :) For the benefit of others if you have missing modules (as seen by module manager) use the command line installer, for NTTR I don't know if it was support or my actions in the web shop/profile looking up my serial key that helped but its there now. -
Bought A-10C beta, but NTTR not showing serial number

You will have received an email at the time of purchase, and it will be on your profile > My Orders with your DCS login -
Activation key for A10C beta owners.
BigBANGtheory replied to Mizzy's topic in Payment and Activation
I have the same problem, bought A-10C in 2010... though what is interesting is that the serial for NTTR does appear to be bound to my account. Module Manager (DCS World 2 Open Alpha) also doesn't recognize P-51D and BS2 for me either, where as A-10C and FC3 were fine  Oh well it is Alpha I guess so have opened 3 support tickets lets see what happens. -
Where to learn basic flight manouvre?
BigBANGtheory replied to kharasho's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
...and that is why I haven't purchased either L39 or Hawk yet, imho BFM is the No.1 essential feature for those modules and also a sensible scenario for NTTR. I'd also imagine there must be some ground based training for carrier landings or do pilots really get thrown in at the deep end if you pardon the pun? -
Pre-Purchase NEVADA Test and Training Range
BigBANGtheory replied to KEULE's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
That is what I thought as I read through it. Regardless this is good news and very much looking forward to seeing NTTR. My hope is to see some A-10C training as this is what I was expecting in the original module i.e. in NTTR and not on the Blacksea but that would be the icing on a delicious cake. -
Probably a silly question but... How is the DCS interactive cockpit going to work in VR? You'll need some hand gesture support surely.

Q:Things to know befor purchasing a Warthog HOTAS
BigBANGtheory replied to 0utLAW's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Good combination, you'll love it I'm sure. Once you have gotten used to the hotas I'd recommend you consider a DIY project to pedestal mount the joystick or some system to fix it to the centre of your chair. Jokes and innuendo's aside having the stick between ur legs feels more immersive :joystick: -
Q:Things to know befor purchasing a Warthog HOTAS
BigBANGtheory replied to 0utLAW's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
You will need pedals and there can be some "stiction" but it is fixable https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6LX4GMJIj4 overall I'd recommend it -
Feedback and General Questions for Video Updates
BigBANGtheory replied to Groove's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
I got to see the YouTube version so thanks for the Stream and thanks for whomever shared the content. I can see why its not ready yet for public release I think you are doing the right thing in developing it further internally at this time. My first thoughts are would it make sense to port the A-10C training missions into NTTR with a gunnery range for target practice? When I was in Death Valley about 1.5yrs ago I saw stealth fighters training and what looked like mid air refueling, might be worth adding that type of back ground traffic. Overall I thought it was looking really good can't wait to see more. -
Feedback and General Questions for Video Updates
BigBANGtheory replied to Groove's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
My feedback is can you please record it so those not able to present can view it? -
Personally I am hoping that DCS W2/Edge and maps will be tested against a Head Mounted Display as part of the process. If there is one community that is known to drop money on quality hardware its the SIM community I can see the likes of Oculus and Vive growing rapidly in the next 12months here regardless of what happens with other software developers. Very excited to see what happens in this space.

Personally I'd like to fly the A10-C training missions in Nevada, all I ever wanted from the module. Fingers crossed that gets ported over.... Not sure I'd pay for more module updates tbh, but that doesn't mean its not a popular choice for other owners. Very much looking forward to the F18 though.

Hawk for DCS World Christmas Sale - 30% Off
BigBANGtheory replied to Ells228's topic in Community News
Given the nature of the Hawk do you get aerobatic training missions as part of the module? Things like aerobatic maneuvers as opposed to more functional training like starting up the aircraft and learning the systems. -
TrackIR or Oculus Rift?
BigBANGtheory replied to Hoggorm's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
TrackIR is great but frankly Oculus will replace it, are you prepared to wait is the only real question? -
I'd love to give this module a go hand drawn as a layer in gimp (have saved the wire frame as proof for anyone who thinks I've cheated using image effects)

Public inquiry. What is your PC video card?

AMD R9 290x. very much looking forward to x64 memory addressing and Dx11 -
PhysX 3 can run on the CPU, you're not locked into an Nvidia GPU to utilise it... at least this is how I understand it from the Arma 3 perspective. Naturally there is a cost to the CPU in doing this...

Where exactly are we with the Nevada module and Edge? Its like a topic of avoidance atm, lets talk about 'all this other stuff' anything to avoid Edge when everyone wants it.

I just checked and the wingman skill level for the Dusk mission 11 in the Deployment campaign is currently set to Good. I am now on mission 12 where the wingman skill level is set to Excellent and yes I have to say the wingman in this mission behaves better so you maybe onto something there.
