  1. will do good advice, Acedy. I'm always interested in return policies, as a matter of doing business. Other than that, any opinion about the device itself or the concept of it? Anyone? :) Flyby out
  2. lots of good experiences, but I'm leaning away from wireless as a personal choice. I'm looking closely at NetGear's Powerline series. Would someone please look this over and offer an opinion? It looks like a simple solution. thanks! Flyby out (d'oh!!! here's the link to the product line page) http://www.netgear.com/Solutions/HomeNetworking/PowerlineNetworking.aspx
  3. rgrt, P. a good thing to know. Flyby out
  4. rgrt Krickey, Kuky thanks a lot. :) I saw that were modles rated at 56mbps and 85mbps. I'll double check for latency. I once had an isp service that transmitted through the power lines; the modem plugged into an outlet and from there to the PC. For hosting coops I always had one of the best connections, and guys always commented on the low pings they got when I hosted. Alas I turned poor and had to adopt to dsl. :( sailor-vee! :D Flyby out
  5. is this a good one? for online gaming, what's a good support speed for a router? I've located a plug-in unit stateside: http://www.compuplus.com/i-Netgear-XE102US-Wall-Plugged-POWERLINE-TO-ETHERNET-BRIDGE-1002736~.html?sid=ndp7386h2a4fvru#moreinfo I've found others too, but gives a general idea. neat concept. 6. 'xplains why I wasn't familiar with it.:music_whistling: I'm trying to find an equivalent outlet plug-in here in the USA that's similar to the product line Devolo has. I found one, but where it's website lists places to buy, those places have no inventory of the item. hmmmm.... I'll keep looking Flyby out
  7. Acedy, thanks for the links. I'll see if I can locate something similar here. It looks very interesting. I hope my electrical wiring is up to it. I once had an internet service that was delivered directly from the wall outlet, through a plug-in modem directly to my pc. It was great! until the rates when up and I had to drop down to dsl service. :( Pilotasso, directional antennae is an innovation in routers I'm not familiar with, but I'll definitely keep it in mimnd if I go that route. Thanks for mentioning the encrytion software. I'll look for that when I read wireless routers. Interesting about your sister. I thought you lived on the first floor!:P j/k thanks guys. good stuff and another reason I like this forum. Flyby out
  8. thanks for the advice, guys I will definitely read up on setting up a router. I had thought about using my WinXP disc, but it's a home upgrade, and I've been keeping an eye on Vista Home edition premium 64 bit. I'm leaning heavily towards going wired since I intend my new PC to be strictly for gaming, and mainly online gaming at that. ;) So a big THANKS! to you guys for your opinions. Now to get the wife to go along with me drilling a hole!:P Flyby out
  9. One of these days when I get my act together I'll get that new gaming rig. Meanwhile I've been pondering how to share the internet connection with the wife's pc. I've read that the newest wireless routers are fairly secure. I've also read some time ago that hard-wiring two computers to a router is the most secure. Doing a hard-wire setup in my older home presents it's challenges. What are you guys doing (those who have two PCs sharing an internet connection)? I happen to has a dsl connection too, if that matters. Flyby out
  10. This article is a bit old, but speaks about video texture-loading performance. I'm not even usre it will be helpful for Black Shark. I don't have the sim yet anyway. But maybe someone can check it out and see if it's of any value today? Flyby out http://www.hovercontrol.com/artman/publish/article_92.shtml
  11. lowest FPS? 60-100fps really is awesome. But what is the lowest fps seen? I'd be more interested in that number per given rig. Of course I'm thinking BS will impose a performance penalty in situations that stress the cpu, like heavy AI activity, and rendering explosions, flares, etc. Along that line of thought, the more computations a cpu has to make (per cycle?) the greater the chance for stutters, and lower frame rates, imo. I wonder if the PCI-e bridge has wide enough bandwidth to the transfer of data? Then again it's a vicious cycle to go chasing bottlenecks. :( Flyby out
  12. rgrt! I can hardly wait to get airborne (but alas, prudence over all else). But I will definitely be back. And much sooner than I anticipated. Wife is a loving wife! :D Flyby out
  13. Kali, I'm sure you're aware of Cougar world. The site is down now, but you can find all things "Cougar" there. I wonder if there is a mod for lighter springs? I'm sure there must be. If not, keep at it with the Cougar. One day you too can have a wrist as big around as your thigh! :D here's the link: http://cougar.frugalsworld.com/ Flyby out ps be sure to read about greasing the gimbals. ;)
  14. nice article here's a quote from the article: "The Kamov firm, starting with systems for the navy, has become the only company in the world to launch a serial production of ‘co-axial helicopters' (two counter-rotating blades give increased maneuverability and stability to the craft). And now recall the killing ability of Black Sharks, and the two-seater Alligator, which has a strike potential unequalled anywhere else in the world. It has an onboard digital computer, while pilots are provided with helmet-mounted target designators, thermal imagery technology." Got any links that recall the killing ability? Those would be a welcome read too. Flyby out
  15. actually Cougars do work right out of the box, to be more precise. It's just the bean-counter build quality that eventually may cause slop in the axis. Don't get me started about cleaning the axis pots!
  16. well you know what they say about shoe size...:megalol::megalol: Flyby out
  17. now we can expect to see a variant from DCS. Imagine that as a two-seater command vehicle in online play. http://www.air-attack.com/news/article/3502/Russia-has-3-export-orders-for-Ka-52-helicopters---manufacturer.html Flyby out
  18. Polecat, I have an old Cougar, #4671, and one new I bought new Two years ago (still in the box). Please tell me or link me to where I can learn how to modify the new one with brass or Mylar. Thanks! Flyby out ps it's not nice to call people girlie-men. I don't (even with my right wrist the size of my left thigh!).
  19. More tests here (interesting): http://techreport.com/articles.x/16229/1
  20. maybe, but... Maybe one day dual GPU cards will sort out their performance issues, but currently neither Nvidia nor ATi seem inclined to do so. But look for Lucid's Hydra to, perhaps, drive them to give a better effort. Latest speculation is that Intel and Lucid will team up, and maybe Intel's next version of it's X58 mobo, the Smackover, will have the Hydra chip. As you know, Hydra will allow two GPUs to scale to nearly 100%, something neither major card maker can claim. Lot's of info about it on the web now. Dual GPUs are like running SLi or Crossfire, imo. Just more of the same technology, but only on the same pcb. Like I said, maybe one day the big guns will sort out their rech issues if they can make a buck at it. Flyby out
  21. here's another review, basically the same conclusion: http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTYxMiwxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA== maybe by the time I'm in a position to buy a new system the price of the -285 will be close to the current price of the -280. But I've seen prices of the -280 dropping closer to $300.00 USD ;) Flyby out
  22. It comes across as a do-over, imo. With prices of the GTX 280 dropping, and a new X58 capable of running SLi, well, things that make you go"hmmmmm..." oh, the link: http://www.tbreak.com/articles/40/1/Zotac-GTX285-AMP-Edition/Page1.html Flyby out
  23. that's a great observation. Some guys run IL2 at 1080 just to see those bogeys further out. I imagine running at a rez of 25xx those bogeys have a "stealth" advantage, especially if the bogey is running at 1080. Imagine that in a full-real room!!:D Hmmm...maybe the input lag of running 1080rez on a 22 inch lcd monitor might equalize the SA? Flyby out
  24. Have an update on Hydra. At first I thought the chip would be included on Intel's next x58 mobo, the Smackover-II. here's the latest info: http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=11450&Itemid=34 Flyby out
