1. Alternatively, go into map and then info mode, if you're not trying to calculate an ERBL.
2. I'm underwhelmed. What does it offer over mouse&keyboard? Multitouch, I suppose, but I'm a crabby old man who wants something other than novelty from it. I'd also like a better idea of how it works...
3. In my experience, if you have a problem with the laser from the get-go, the Vikhr will go pretty much straight for the ground. It's only after it's in relatively stable flight that a guidance issue will cause it to deviate slowly, at least for me.
4. Yeah, and I just now got around to asking about it. I've been wondering for awhile. It just seems odd, especially since all the other missiles have appropriate sounds...
5. When I'm in F6 view, I hear no sound regardless of the missile aspect and regardless of zoom.
6. I searched and found a couple mentions of this, but no explanation. Why are the Vikhrs silent when the engines are still hot? Is this just an unaddressed bug?
7. I just logged in for the first time in a few days, only to be greeted by the apparent firestorm over the DCS World beta. I read through the 9 page thread that got locked and saw another thread or two that got locked almost immediately. I recognize that this is a touchy subject, but I have an honest question and I couldn't find an answer in the sanitized threads. I'm hoping I won't bring down too much punishment on myself for asking. My question is this: Have we been given any reason by ED why the BS2 upgrade users are not allowed in the open beta? I saw nothing in the announcement, and all I saw in the sanitized threads was a bunch of speculation. Has there been an actual statement on why it is this way?
8. Bear with me on this. I spent a good couple of years flying the Shark in SP-only. Recently, with the advent of BS2, I decided to try out this multiplayer that everyone keeps talking about. I found myself a squadron, zipped through their training program, and have been spending some quality time on their server. With Teamspeak and TARS, the communication is phenomenal! TS works only over the actual radios on actual frequencies. We can communicate with the Hog pilots on both the fore and aft radios (thanks to some nifty lua frequency changess). The quality of the teamwork is just exceptional! Last night, I flew out to one of our active ranges and took out a few targets. As I was heading back to the FARP to rearm, I broke left just for the heck of it, only to have a Strela shriek by and take out my landing gear. Talk about my luckiest maneuver to date! I met up with 2 more squadmates who had just popped in. I caught up with them at the other end of the active range and had some fun taking out a tank column and some AAA. Afterwards, I sat high and did watch duty while #2 did a SEAD flyover. I was able to actually spot the Strela launch, alert him to take evasive action, and track/engage the SAM. It was awesome! When #2 took damage, I was able to escort him back to the FARP and watch him ride the hydrolic rollercoaster while #3 finished cleaning up the range. When #3 got nicked, I was able to meet him (had to find him visually because his DL was out) and escort him back as well. It's just so cool working with real people! So, my point is this: If you love the bird but hate the AI, get online! Find a group of like-minded chopper pilots, set up a mission or training range, and go work as a real team with real people! There's else nothing like it!
9. For me, it depends greatly on the terrain. When I'm on my favorite server, our training missions are generally in pretty darned flat areas, so I tend to favor high-altitude standoff attacks. I'll sit up at 800-1200m and do a lot of Shkval scanning. At higher altitudes, you can flip to manual weapon control and score hits on larger targets (e.g. a Strela) at 10km out. It sucks up gas, but as long as you have air superiority and a defined front-line that you can stay behind, it's effective. If I'm in hilly terrain, I'll do a lot more popping up, scanning/firing and then popping back down and scooting elsewhere. I'm not good with just my eyeballs, and my monitor isn't the best, so I usually have to move in a little closer if I'm doing this. Just my $0.02
10. Is there anything in the patch that'll drastically affect FPS? I've been trying to get mine back up to playable and I'd love to see us get back the FPS we had in 1.1.0.8 =)
11. My monitor is starting to give me issues, which means I'll be upgrading in the not-too-distant future. I just read through a rundown of the two competing technologies on TH, and I feel relatively informed. Now I have to make a choice about which standard I'm going to go with. Before I make that choice, I'm wondering if either of them work well with DCS, and if there are any plans from the developers regarding these technologies in the near future. DCS is my primary recreational computer activity, so I want to make sure that whatever I get will work with it. Any and all advice, questions and comments are appreciated =)
12. Terminal Meltdown: It's an older card, yes, but I'd hardly call it crap. Without dating my gaming habits by naming names (like "Bioshock" and "Chaos Theory"), I've had no real problems with recent games, and BS1 still ran pretty slick. Oh, and add Skyrim to that list. On top of that, my impression of DCS is that it's always been CPU bottlenecked. Plus, looking at the forums, it sounds like people have had many more problems with FPS since the 1.1.1.0 patch. I'm wondering if a) there's a bug causing this that hasn't been fixed yet and b) if there's a solution other than a new mobo+CPU.
13. Hey Folks. I'm running BS2 now on the following system: Core 2 Quad @ 3.0GHz 4GB DDR2 800 Radeon 4870 I know it's not top of the line, but I didn't have issues in BS1, and now I've dropped my resolution from 1680x1050 to 1280x800, seriously chopped my settings (no HDR, no AA, cockpit 512, medium-to-low on most settings) and I'm still getting ~15fps in the GOC missions. Is there a magic bullet I'm missing? Do we still need to set core affinity? What else can I do to get this framerate back to playable? Thanks in advance =)
14. Pardon me, but I'm not the best with LUA, and I couldn't find any settings in the R-800 lua file to change the starting frequency. Is there a setting I'm missing? Also, is there a list of all the attributes for the lua files in the Shark?
15. Much thanks to red.devil and ironstrike! I'm going to borrow that ABRIS modification and share it with my squad. They'll appreciate it =)
16. Just wanted to say thanks for the prototype picture! I'd love to see what the capabilities of that bird are, though I agree that I'd tend to smear it along the runway with my rolling takeoffs.
17. If I flip the laser into designator mode, is the A-10 at all able to see what I'm lasing? I did a brief search, but all I found was the coordinate method.
18. Much thanks for the guide! I just got this puppy working for my first flight with the 402nd VTHS and boy oh boy was it amazing! I'm looking forward to adding ADF slaving capability. As an aside, does anyone know why we have a TUN button and why the frequency doesn't just switch automatically? Also, can these frequencies be changed on the real bird by the ground crew?
19. I'm a med student without too much time for hobbies, but I really would like some coop experience and feedback/critiques. I just dropped an application in =)
20. I'm uploading this mostly because I love feedback on my flying. This is perhaps my best shot at the patrol mission. I use labels to locate the targets initially because my monitor just isn't high enough resolution to look for distant units. I'll be trying the label hack for distant units that I saw on the forum pretty soon here. When I watched again with time compression, it DID go out of sync, so mileage may vary. Any comments or feedback would be very welcome. Also consider this an audition for any squadrons that wouldn't mind me bumming around one of these evenings. I'm a pretty busy med student, but I would LOVE to do a cooperative mission sometime.
21. Man, I was REALLY hopeful that it was for real =(
22. Okay, so in the Ka-50, the engine is in control of the fuel control system? One more question: I've noticed that levers for the cutoff valves have a relatively long travel (as opposed to, say, all the switches in the cockpit). Does this slowly open a valve as you move the lever? Or is that long lever travel there just to prevent accidentaly flipping it on/off? When I boot up the sim next, I'll try doing a false start and see if I can set my engine on fire that way...
23. I'm not a real life flier, but I've had the opportunity to talk to several medevac chopper pilots. My understanding is that if you introduce fuel too early during startup, you can get a fireball that is generally pretty not-good for the engine. Some newer choppers have an automatic starter thing that ensures this doesn't happen. Am I off-base with this? Are "hot starts" possible in the Ka-50? Are they modeled?
24. Freetrack works great in BS with a trackirfixer patch and BS2 has native support for it. I have a USAF baseball cap with 3 LEDs sticking out of it.
