If you are looking for most "bang for the buck" i5 will do fine. For DCS you wouldn't notice much difference between the i5 and i7. You can also spend those 100 euros you save for a decent cpu cooler and overclock your cpu, if you feel comfortable doing it. Pyro's suggestion regarding the 3820 is also very good. I have that cpu myself and I'm very happy with it. Have it overclocked to 4,6Ghz as well. Another good thing with it, is that you can upgrade your cpu down the road, since the 2011 socket is the latest one. Regarding the memory. I don't know the physical dimensions for the memory Pyro mentioned, but check that they don't get in the way of any cpu cooler you might get. I had problems with the height of my memory modules getting in the way of my noctua cooler

A few things to be aware of: - DCS World does not make use of multiple cores atm. Right now it only uses 2 cores. 1 for sound, and 1 for everything else. - Due to the above fact, there will be no performance increase between an i5 and an i7 if they are running on the same frequency. (Disclaimer: If you are running all kinds of programs in the background as well as the DCS client, you can benefit from a i7, since you can put those applications on other cores.) Higher frequency = Better performance - In theory there will be no performance increase in the actual game if you are running it from a SSD. SSD will however decrease the loadingtime. Some people say they have had an increase in performance with a SSD, but this can be due to other factors as faulty disk, drivers, settings, old windows install etc. - Video card, don't get anything with less then 2GB. People can say what they want but my 580GTX with 1,5GB is running at 100% usage of VRAM quite often. That's on a single 1920x1200 monitor. On my new 2560x1440 monitor I have to turn off MSAA, turning it on, kils my FPS, going to upgrade. So if you know how to, overclock your CPU :)

Check out this thread. Will probably solve some of your issue. Made my game a lot more enjoyable. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=91184

It's posted on their facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/FSX.F15.Development yes yes, it says FSX, but it's for both.

Nice video. How where you able to get those camera spots, like inside the chopper for example. And getting the chopper to hover above water like that? -
Good deal on Dell U3011 30" monitor
TZeer replied to Konovalov's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I'm running 2560x1440 with two 580GTX 1,5gb in SLI, runs good. But It lacks enough VRAM. If I run without MSAA and TSAA it runs fine. But some times my VRAM maxes out and I get FPS drop. If I activate any form of MSAA I'm constantly bottle necked by the lack of VRAM. -
I dont think it's steam that's the problem. I would check firewall settings, router settings or whatever. Usually when I have had problems with software not being able to get online it's been due to stuff like that.

Dropped a CBU-105 on a friendly FARP... FARP was waypoint, tanks incomming, forgot to change SPI from wp to TGP... Didn't help that this was during multiplayer... LOL

Lol, I saw that now. Oh well, the mods merged the thread so no worry :) If I pass by your place by some random miraculous chance I'll definitively take you up on that offer. Regarding the resolution. I don't think that would be much of a problem. As of now they are shipping the dev kits with 1280x800 (640x800 per eye) resolution. But we must remember that the density of pixels is much higher then on a normal 24" monitor. But he has mentioned that already early next year there will be small displays with double and triple the resolution.

Oculus Rift, something DCS could support? http://oculusvr.com/ http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1523379957/oculus-rift-step-into-the-game Saw this, and immediately thought, "damn that would be cool in DCS". I'm not sure what kinda changes would need to be done to DCS to support it, or if it would work out of the box. But we are looking at roughly 1 year+ before we can expect consumer products. The developer kits are getting shipped in december.

Found this on the net: http://publicintelligence.net/us-army-apache-longbow-ah-64d-attack-helicopter-operators-manual/ Technical Manual/Operator's Manual for the AH-64D Longbow. 1082 pages manual, tons of information.

Hmm, looks like I might go for a GTX 680 then, with 4gb. Seems to be less trouble with nVidia then AMD when it comes to this game.

How much VRAM is needed for 2560x1440 resolution? With all the bells and whistles going? Currently running 2x 580 GTX 1,5Gb in SLI, and atm I'm using up all my VRAM at certain periods, without having MSAA activated. So, If I was looking for a better setup. What card, and how much VRAM would I need to get? Thanks

The odd LOD thread! Report LOD inconsistencies here.

Nevermind! Fixed in the latest update :) -
Now I'm running everything @ max except: TSSAA :OFF Cockpit Display: 512 And the MSAA @ 4x But from what I hear, you can reduce that when you go up in the resolution, since the image quality is much better. Also, the monitor I'm looking at is the Samsung SyncMaster S27A850T. Not IPS but PLS. Getting good reviews from what I can see.
-
How much VRAM do you use with that resolution? I used to have those dips in the 30's as well. But I changed some small numbers in the graphics.cfg file, and everything got a whole lot smoother. Look in this thread for the change: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=91184 This was with a single GTX 580. Not SLI. Normally when I have experienced those dips, it's not the GPU that has been heavily loaded, but the CPU. Using nvidia inspector you can see that the GPU usage goes down, while the CPU usage in task manager goes up.

Thinking about upgrading from a 24" (1900x1200) to a 27" (2560x1440). Currently I'm running 2x GTX 580 1,5Gb VRAM in SLI. How much of a performance hit will the increase in resolution be? As of now, I can run the game at 60FPS stable (vsync on) most of the time. In certain areas it dips down to 40-50, but that's due to CPU bottleneck (i7 3820@ 4,6 GHz) and not the GPU's fault. Will I still be able to get stable 60FPS @ 2560x1440 resolution? Thanks

I'm just posting the info I find on reviews and tests :) In RAID 0, TRIM will not work and it's up to the firmware to handle it. See this for more info: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/51455-intel-520-240gb-ssd-raid-0-performance-review-10.html Yes, you get a boost. But it's not like night and day as when you moved from a HDD to a SSD. Looking at these: 4 and 3 seconds is not worth it in my opinion. Would be better to have them separated, 1 for OS and 1 for games. With no negative sides to it. But that's just my opinion :) Either way, you will get a good computer with fast load times. Happy flying :)
-
Just a small input... Going RAID with two SSD`s wont give you that much extra. Yes, it looks awesome on paper, but in reality it wont give you that much, also you will have other issues as well: For the whole test of singel SSD versus RAID 0 with 2 SSD's check this out: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/kigston-hyperx-ssd-raid0_2.html

Wow!! Just checked the settings you mentioned Mustang. Changing this: structures = {60, 20000}; to this: structures = {30, 20000}; Made major impact on my FPS. Went from 38-39 and up to 60+ :) Thanks!!
-
Thanks for the feedback on this question :) Good to hear I wasn't totally off when I felt something was acting funny. Will test these setting myself. If you find any more useful info Mustang, please post here. Thanks!!! Regards TZeer

I know that. But as I said. I can look at the entire city without getting the same hit. It's just when the harbor comes into the view this happens. I tested on another city that was larger. And I had no such performance drop. Are the objects in the harbor that many? Or that resource intensive? I'll try and make a FRAPS so it's easier to see what I mean.
