  1. All the defence $$$ earmarked for few AIM9s, was instead reallocated to the cops and their water cannon truck which, given that APEC is over, will now be used to as a dust gathering device. :) Seriously though, they'd never have fired a missile (or any other weapon) on a small GA aircraft.
  2. Man that's not cool... I liked this Youtube comment :) "I pity the poor pilot who was sent to a Gulag in Siberia"
  3. I wonder how many happy endings for APEC delegates at the Cross are being funded by the aussie taxpayer?
  4. Naturally it requires training. Snipers or even rifleman for that matter aren't taught with a rolled hand up to the eye. The experience is entirely different. When you learn to use both eyes, what you ultimately see is a near full field of view with crosshairs. What is amusing though, particularly in TV or movies, is when some action star blinks when they fire a shot. That is the hallmark of a nub. Anyway, back on topic of this off topic thread, ArmA, whilst cool in some regards is rediculous in others. Take for example the 250 or 450cc dirtbike (cant remember bore size). Anyway, you try to drive that thing up the tiniest of off road hill and it almost goes backwards. That thing should be wheel standing all the way up. Same goes with trucks etc. Driving along a road and if you just touch the gravelly fringe, the truck slows right down like its driving in 1ft deep mud. The ground vehicle dynamics are terrible.
  5. Not entirely true. You use one to aim over ironsights or scope, the other looks in direction of the target for situational awareness.
  6. Will have to check this out: http://www.theinquirer.org/?article=42075
  7. Peace for this poor soul. At least he went doing something he no doubt loved. http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/07/28/airshow.roundup.ap/index.html
  8. Nice! :) So from that I take it the F35 is very unstable, thus the computer controls?
  9. Nice detail on these ground units, but it's making the terrain look incredibly plain now.
  10. oK... so more ArmA patch problems. As per Groove's advice I updated my drivers to the latest revision. Same problem now. Sometimes ArmA freezes after the texture problem appears. So ctrl-alt-del kill process is required. Then I go to the forum Groove mentioned link and I hear about people havnig problems with which patches they have used. Seems there are not only US and International Patches, but some specific versions floating around for other parts of Europe. I love to support game developers but come on... so many different patch paths, so many bugs. If you have to run so many different product rev's, then include an auto-updater so the confusion can be avoided. I'm uninstalling... and taking this one back for a refund.
  11. Hey Groove, I have the 8800GTX. Lots of people have problems with ArmA and that card. Never played coop yet, though sure it would be fun, I just cant get past the graphics problems.
  12. Well that patch made my ArmA install even worse. What a PoS... the texture handling is pathetic. They even needed to include a command to reset VRAM memory cache or something. What other game needs such a bandaid? And what gives with the motorbike (I think its a 650cc) slowing down when you go on a bit of grass?? Should be able to roost up hills. I give ArmA 3/10 so far.
  13. I heard that ED are merging with XSI (of FighterOps)... OOps.. was I supposed to keep that secret? :)
  14. Do you have processor affinity set? I had the same problem on dual core. Lockon is not multicore friendly. Go to process manager, right click lockon.exe and set affinity. Set it to CPU or Core 1. 0 is typically used by the OS. Hope it helps.
  15. Highly unlikely a pure AV product would cause it, but disabling it will tell. If your AV also has built in firewall or intrusion prevention, then it may also be causing it.
  16. Tried what? LAN? Can you ping the other system? You could try telnetting to the game port, see if you get a connection refused. That would tell you its fw/security related.
  17. I had the exact same problem before. Let me give you some background no the networking side. I If the two computers can browse the Internet, they have separate IP addresses (these are addresses like 10.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x etc, and are NOT publicly addressable, meaning a computer across the internet cannot ping that address directly - only systems on your local LAN can). You have one router. That router has an external IP address (external is publicly addressable, meaning it can - firewall permitting, be pinged from another system via the Iternet) and it also has an internal IP address. When any of the two systems sends packets (IP data) through the router (your default gateway), the router performs network address translation (NAT) such that the source IP address is changed to that of the routers external IP address. This ensures that packets coming back from the internet know how to get back to the source. When a packet returns from the internet to your router, the router checks its NAT table, modifies the destination IP address and then forwards the packet to that destination inside your network. I had the exact same problem, and to resolve it, you would need to perform some tricky NAT tasks, which could possibly break other connections and more importantly, almost NO consumer gateways provide for powerful NAT configuration. So, THE solution is to use LAN mode.
  18. Then there is the BFG 8800GTX OC2, with the following: core clock 626 Mhz shader clock 1450 Mhz memory clock 2000 Mhz... EVGA have an equivalent to the OC2, but its about $50-60 more expensive.
  19. Hey Sponge, Intel price drops just came into effect over the weekend. You can get a really nice core 2 duo setup really cheap now. Also, do you know about price comparison tools like http://www.shopbot.com.au and http://staticice.com.au? When you figure out how much you want to spend, post here, and some will give recommendations on what to get :)
  20. I have Fedora 6 on a laptop. Its really nice in many ways, but painful in others. Its fine as an enthusiasts machine, but not really as general use. So many things can and do go wrong on a linux box that require lots of troubleshooting. Also Wireless is still painful on linux. Hopefully Ubuntu's next release will resolve that. But one of my biggest gripes is the difficulty getting dual monitors to work. In the case of windows, if I want to project a presentation, I simply plug in the projector and hit the alt-f7 or similar key (depending on laptop) and 90% of the time you're good to go. A reboot fixes the other 10%. On linux, this has proven to be very, very painful and unreliable. Bummer.
  21. But for 70GB RAM you would need to use the 64bit OS, and from memory, that brings a host of other compatibility issues :) But it is an advance nonetheless.
  22. Simply amazing. Vista astounds me.
  23. Parts for my new system build are streaming in by courier. Today I opened a box. Instead of the usual excited sensation unique to sniffing new IT gear (is it just me?), I felt something altogether different; guilt. It was none other than Windows Vista. Looking at the shrink wrapped DVD case I wondered if breaking the seal equates to selling my soul to DRM, or more specifically the RIAA and MS. Linking back to Lockon... given that Vista takes up 1GB RAM, I wonder if it will just slow lockon down. I appreciate MS for many things, but not for Vista. But still I bought it... albeit an OEM system builder version. So here is a poll. (The third option would be a sacrificial microwave oven spa for the DVD).
  24. Hey Mikoyan, mate I wish it did work on Mac.
  25. Do you mean TsingTao? Or is it spelt with a Q in your home town? In China the locals also drink TsingTao. Of course its surprising to see Lockon in there, but perhaps moreso, that they use little 15" CRTs. /D
