  1. If OCing I think you'd be better off with getting a 2133MHz DDR3 kit (2x8 or 2x16) if you have the £££ to spare, otherwise aim for 24GB as others have suggested.
  2. Is Kaby Lake + Z170 shooting myself in the foot in some way(s)???
  3. Looks like a nice rig! Best to stick with Win10 for Kaby Lake build, also I believe that some versions of Win7-64 can't use 32GB of RAM. Q) Why a 1TB M.2 and a 1TB SATA SSD? Is one for OS and one for Flightsim, or do you have other uses for the system? OS will easily fit on a 256GB M.2 drive. I've never OCed a Kaby Lake CPU and I'd say my computing skills are "intermediate" but below are some free tools I've used for OCing in the past: System information / monitoring CPU-Z HWMonitor GPU-Z Temp monitoring Core Temp... currently using this myself. Real Temp Stress testing... I know some people think the first two provide unrealistically large system thermal loads. Intel Burn Test... can't find the original developers site??? Anyway just Google for links. Prime95 Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool... found this by chance - never used it but might be useful. OCCT Graphics card utilities Nvidia Inspector... not sure if DCS benefits from this??? Google for links. Display Driver Uninstaller... use when updating or trying different display drivers. Hope some of these might be helpful. !!!For goodness sake read your M/B manual fully before OCing anything!!! :).
  4. Really??? When I browsed the manuals of both boards the section on RAID setup was slightly different, perhaps the BIOS has been updated... anyway so what is the difference between the two boards (is it just marketing b### s###)? I've seen the Asus Z170 Pro Gamer on special offer, what do people think about that compared to the Prime Z270-A or the Z270F with a Kaby Lake CPU? I'm probably going to go for SATA SSDs, RAM not faster than 3200MHz and would be happy with an i5-7600k OCed to 4.8GHz.
  5. The Asus boards I was looking at are the Prime Z270-A or the Strix Z270F, the only differences I can work out are the Prime supports Thunderbolt while the Strix allows RAID with M.2 drives.
  6. Yeah I wish developers of all sims would give more quantitative feedback on hardware requirements. OK some other considerations: Bandwidth GB/s = MHz x 8 x 2 Speed ns =CAS x 1000 x 2 / MHz 3000MHz 48GB/s 10ns £240 G.Skill Trident Z 15-15-15-35 £260 Corsair LPX 15-15-15-36 £280 Corsair Dominator 15-15-15-36 3200MHz 51.2GB/s 10ns £250 G.Skill Ripjaws V 16-18-18-38 £275 Corsair LPX 16-18-18-36 3200MHz 51.2GB/s 9.4ns £280 G.Skill Ripjaws V 15-15-15-35 £285 G.Skill Trident Z 15-15-15-35 Hmm... perhaps go for either 3000MHz or 3200MHz CAS15... Dominator 3000MHz vs Trident Z 3200MHz???
  7. OK so these seem to be my options for dual channel 32GB 3200MHz kits: CAS16 Corsair LPX 16-18-18-36 £275 G.Skill Ripjaws V 16-18-18-38 £250 CAS15 G.Skill Ripjaws V 15-15-15-35 £280 G.Skill Trident Z 15-15-15-35 £285 I'm tempted to just go for the CAS16 G.Skill at £250 since I don't think the CAS will make any difference in a flightsim(???): 32GB CAS14 kits are over my budget.
  8. Flightdeck dynamics Can DCS model pitch role and heave for carriers? Even if it's scripted, perhaps for a given weather pattern, it would add more realism / challenge to trapping.
  9. Was that while you were using the Rift in an application?
  10. But does it really make sense to spend more on RAM than your CPU with a limited budget? E.g. on Amazon: i5-7600K about £215 32GB DD4 3200 kit from about £230 to £290
  11. OK so consumer "emotions" aside, what are peoples recommendations for brands? Which have good warranties?
  12. Anyone care to suggest the typical performance difference between these speeds?
  13. Thinking about an i5-7600K or i7-7700K build on Z270 M/B dedicated to flightsims and for VR in the future. Q1) Based on browsing users system specs on several flightsim forums am I right in thinking the current Kaby Lake "sweetspot" for RAM is: 16MB DDR4-3200??? Q2) Is anyone really going to need more than 16GB for current flightsims (anyone running the above sims with 8GB and no OOMs)? Q3) Would VR need more system RAM?
  14. 1) Mi-26... but please *multi-user*. I'd tend to be more interested in multi-role capability, particularly anything you can launch anti-ship or AG missiles from for goodness sake! Perhaps larger helicopters could be a catalyst for developing naval operations in the sim, I think ship based ASW missions would be great. 2) HH/MH/SH-60 Black Hawk family... Hellfire missiles :D 3) AS532 Super Puma OR EC725... Exocet missiles :D However if it's well simulated, I'll always consider it. NB I could have added the AW101 Merlin but it is fly-by-wire so would need a proper simulation of this for me to buy it.
  15. A-29B guts! A-29B cutaway colour A-29B cutaway B&W
  16. I'm really intrigued by this project, given the weapons load and avionics this will be a lot of fun to fly. Some questions: 1) Will this aircraft feature a true multi-user cockpit? 2) If I had to choose I'd choose the A-29B, but might there be a single seat a A-29A at some point? 3) Does anyone think this aircraft could be incorporated into a "training program" for new DCS users before moving to the A10C?
  17. Thanks for everyone's replies. I haven't used a HOTAS setup before so I don't want to overspend, nevertheless the CH Fighterstick is a more expensive option I had considered. I think I'll go for the TM16000M, I already have CH rudder pedals. As a first setup this will let me experiment and work out my ideal requirements.
  18. I would *love* to see wide bodies aircraft, but: 1) I'm wondering if it would be better for the long term development of the sim to prioritise developing shared cockpit functionality first? 2) Perhaps "boring" (but I'd like them!) missions like AWACS patrol, refuel patrol cargo etc might not appeal to DCS users. However sharing such aircraft with other users would be interesting. Nevertheless I think it would be awesome to be able to fly high quality wide bodies in non combat missions in the threat environment. It would add to the prestige of the sim amongst other sims like FSX and X-Plane too.
  19. Looking for my first HOTAS setup. Narrowed it down to Thrustmaster T16000M £94 http://www.thrustmaster.com/en_UK/products/t16000m-fcs-hotas Saitek X52 Pro £154 (Not X52 because I keep hearing about QA issues???) http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/x52pro.html What do people think?
  20. I'm also considering a new build and I understand that DCS does not benefit from logical cores. Q) Is there any real advantage of a 6700K over a 6600K? (Or indeed a 4790K over a 4690K?)
  21. 1) Mi-26 2) CH53E / CH-53 3) AW101 4) NH90 5) UH-60 / SH-60 # I haven't flown helicopters but for a utility craft it's got to be that huge Mi-26. Indeed I think DCS needs wider body vehicles generally. (I'd hope to see shared cockpit for a big craft like that but I wonder if it can be flown realistically by one user?) # I'd really like to be able to do ASW missions and mine sweeping, so a helicopter with such capabilities would be awesome. # For a more accurate / realistic simulation I'd prefer non FBW and not something too new.
  22. 1) C (or B if I had to choose) 2) A (only if shared cockpit available in DCS world - F1Bs were trainers but still useful / fun to share cockpit) 3) C 4) A (if there's a lot of commonality then perhaps make available as an optional extension to the non-M module?)
  23. What will "fly by wire simulation" mean in this project, i.e. how deeply will the Mirage 2000C fly by wire system be represented? I'm coming from a mostly FSX simming background where you often come across developers advertising simulations of Airbus or other fly by wire aeroplanes. In fact I can think of only one Airbus A320 project that is actually modelling the fly by wire system - i.e. movements of my my flight controls are actually monitored by a module in the sim.
  24. Will RAZBAM consider the two seat Mirage 2000D as a future extension of the project if shared cockpit features appear in DCS world? (Or even the 2000N nuclear strike version if nuclear weapons ever appear in DCS world?)
