The aircraft fell into a lake and will be pulled out for investigation (witnesses say it floated on the surface for a time, meaning it was in some part intact). Current main consern is controling the liquids and other materials contaminating the water, since that lake is fairly small, but a major source of drinking water for the area.

It wasn't a gear up situation. From what I understand from initial reports, one side was stuck in down position, while the other side and nose gear were stuck in the up position. The pilot (test pilot, instructor) made several attempts to lower them (hydraulic, mechanicaly) and made a landing attampt to see if the down gear would go in, or others would become free, but with no success. One gear langing doesn't seem to be a safe option on this aircraft:

A Serbian J-22 Orao went down today. Gear couldn't lock, so the pilot was ordered to eject over unpopulated area. He sustained light injuries.

Col. Slobodan Perić dies Retired Colonel Slobodan Perić died today in a car accident near Valjevo. Perić was born 15. 1. 1961 in Loznica, and was an active pilot since 1983. He survived being shot down by ejecting from his MiG-29 after it was hit by an AMRAAM on 26.3. 1999. He has retired in 2004. Perić is survived by two children. May he have ethernal clear skies and rest in peace. Slobodan Perić (1961-2010)

I mean - yeah, it was based in Ukraine after the collapse, but I don't think they've done much fun stuff since then, other than repairing Mriya, and it seems that they need the old machinery as a whole in order to do serious production. Good way to build relations anyhow.
