Any plans to allow the VR support to use NVIDIA's VR SLI? And in particular, its broadcast mode (described on page 8 here) that allows a single stream of draw calls to be sent to both GPUs? This feature seems ideally suited to DCS with its large number of objects.

Keep in mind you have to re-apply this change after every DCS update because the file will get overwritten by the updater. I usually forget and find myself back with the Russian tooltips. I'm working on a more permanent solution to this problem: learning all Russian words in Hint_localizer.lua. :)

The HUD is possible to read in the DK2 but you have to do some work and edit some files to crank up the font size. I fixed it for the A-10C (there's another thread about it around here somewhere) but gave up on DCS in VR. Performance was too poor. Will try again with each major new innovation - DCS World 2, VR SLI, new headsets with higher res, etc.

I had the same problem as Luftan, ended up having to turn off the auto detect Oculus Rift setting and that fixed it. More details in this thread: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=2334340#post2334340

I had the same problem, saw lots of D3DERR_INVALIDCALL in the log. I traced it to the OculusRift setting in Saved Games\DCS\Config\options.lua. This must be set to false in order for DCS singleplayer to work now. Multiplayer was working fine with it set to true. I changed it from true to false and watched DCS singleplayer go from not working to working. I used DCS with the Rift (DK2) awhile ago, but stopped because of the bad performance and resolution. Until this new 1.2.15 release I was successfully running DCS on my monitor with the Rift turned off, but this setting set to true. Did something change in DCS with Rift support? I didn't see anything about it in the release notes. It might be related to having the Rift set to run in direct mode vs. extended mode. I have it set to direct mode now and might've always had it set to extended mode when running DCS singleplayer before..? I usually do multiplayer with DCS. Anyway, thanks for the tip GurbY, helped me narrow down the problem quickly.

It's not a bug, it's a feature - just mistakenly duplicated from secret F-22 module in development.

This is a nice illustrated guide, thank you. I noticed one thing you might want to change. It seems you don't need to call for external power. It's not mentioned in the startup procedure in the manual, and one of the MiG-21Bis module developers confirmed it's not necessary: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=130344

Colseg - thanks for this, it's great! I hope LN sees how much sense this makes and integrates it into the official module somehow.

Mods and Tweaks for VR (Oculus Rift)
ralgha replied to RoyMi6's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Here's another essential font size tweak, to make the radio menu readable: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=2028218&postcount=18 (As always, when editing DCS files like this, be sure to use a good text editor like Notepad2 or Notepad++. Standard Windows Notepad will mess things up due to encoding problems.) Also, now that they fixed the multiplayer crash on startup when using the Rift, I noticed it works well (yay!) but there's one problem. The player names in the list of aircraft disappear as soon as I scroll the list (only when using the Rift). This makes it hard to tell who's doing what on the server. Anyone else have this problem or know a solution? I can bring up the pool to see a list of players but I can't tell what they're flying. I guess as a partial workaround I can join the server before turning on the Rift, scope it out, exit and come back in the Rift, but that's kind of a hassle. -
I've done a decent amount of flying in DCS with the DK2 version (1080p screen). This problem is much worse in the Rift. The resolution is spread out over a wider FOV, the view has to be distorted to match the optics, and the DK2 screen's pentile subpixel arrangement means that the effective resolution is even less than 1080p. The end result is that things are very pixelated. You can't even read most of the cockpit instruments without leaning your head in close to them. Reading most of the numbers on HUDs is impossible without special tweaks to increase font size. The difference between a 2560x1440 monitor and the 1080p DK2 is absolutely vast. Oh, and forget about zooming in the Rift! You can't. Even when the consumer version is released with a 1440p screen and better subpixel layout, I would definitely expect unaided visual target acquisition to be a much greater challenge in the Rift compared to a nice 2D monitor. I think it will be a while before HMDs catch up to monitors when it comes to this task. Having said all that, flying in the Rift is still pretty awesome, and the natural 1:1 headtracking is a vast improvement over TrackIR - even if it is a bit more work to check your six without the amplification of head movement. The next couple of years should be very interesting!

Nice tutorial, thanks! I have one question: After reading the manual and doing the air-to-air training mission, I got the impression that when using IR missiles you're supposed to wait until at least one of the signal lights to the lower-right of the ASP is illuminated. I couldn't get them to light up in the training mission, and I noticed it didn't happen in your video either. Are these lights not implemented, not applicable to the missiles you (and the training mission) used, bugged, or am I just missing something? Here's the relevant part from p.135 of the manual:

A report of a change in behavior from one driver version to another should also identify the version previously in use. Otherwise, the change could've come from any number of previous driver releases, unrelated to this latest one. There's such variability in results reported here that no useful conclusion can be drawn other than "anything may happen"!

"no reason" is short for "no apparent reason".

Ordered! Looking forward to digging into the manual ahead of time.

Thanks for setting this up and providing the instructions. It works great. This is so much more fun than hitting the Home key twice!

The bottleneck with AI is almost never processing power. It's spending the development time to identify and solve the various problems that need to be solved. AI is very tricky and can usually only be created by humans, who invariably take a long time to figure out solutions. Any claim similar to "if we just had x times more processing power..." should be viewed with great suspicion at this point.

F-86 seems a fine plane indeed, but perhaps just a bit nose-heavy for some reason.

Did you read the documentation? It's installed along with the module - bombing section is at the end: DCSWorld\Mods\aircrafts\F-86\Doc\DCS F-86F QuickStart EN.pdf

Regarding those caves, I once joined a multiplayer server running Operation Bactria. Took off, joined up with someone who was already working on that tasking. He was trying to explain over the text chat where the cave entrances were and I just couldn't find them for the life of me. Well, he ended up crashing into the side of the mountain right next to them. That made them a lot easier to find! -
Just did this mission with a friend. Fun stuff! Great comms and a good level of challenge for us. Took a few tries to achieve success and even then, one of us got shot down while the other successfully completed the mission. The timing seems to leave less margin for error than other missions I've experienced but it's certainly doable. I messed up a run trying to put those MK-82's to good use (yeah I'm bad) and didn't have time to fix it before it was too late. So next time I just used a GBU-12. We'll be trying this one again in the future. By the way, great JTAC positioning, LOL!

Operation Bactria (MP COOP 14), Afghanistan CAS
ralgha replied to Habu23's topic in User Created Missions General
I did a quick test tonight of the new single player version in DCS World with the audio fix applied. The audio worked fine and I got the voiceovers as usual. The mission proceeded normally - I was doing my usual Hawg flight. My EGI got fried by an SA-13 on the first tasking after I released GBU-38 on the building with the two Ural trucks. Oops. Either I need to fly higher now, or I was just lucky before. That tasking used to be a piece of cake. Looking forward to trying again when time permits. -

Seems there's a workaround for the DCS World audio playback problem here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=91666 Haven't tried it w/ Operation Bactria yet but I will. -

Just wanted to say thanks again, Habu. I love this mission and have used it almost exclusively for my practice since its release. This is the kind of mission that should make up the campaign included in the sim. Looking forward to the new version.
