ON board Sound card or PCI-E one
danilop replied to sotosev's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
There are some fundamental flaws with that video. It assumes that you will not hear the difference - well let me tell you after more than twenty years around pro audio, countless pro and semi pro audio cards - you can hear it clearly. The difference is there if you listen (and more importantly know what to listen for). Heck, you can hear difference between OP amps on accurate equipment every day. Not to mention jittery sync clocks and such. Having said that, the main question is: Will you, as an average gamer notice it in your game while in the heat of the battle? Most likely not! So, although I like Tech Syndicate and i'm long time subscriber, I'm not completely with them on this one. -
Well, it is really sad that there is no FFB on the new Saitek stick. I don't see the reason for X-55's existence now - X52 pro and X-65f cover all grounds, if we talk about universal HOTAS. There are huge amount of FFB steering wheels on the market (I've got Logitech's G25 which is awesome) so that is not the primary reason. Primary reason is small ROI from niche market like hardcore sims one. So they (manufacturers) stick with common denominator - it would be too expensive to design proper FFB stick to please (very demanding) hardcore flight simulator crowd. Logitech tried, but sort of failed and was forced to discontinue their FFB HOTAS early.

DCS 1.2.7 Open Beta - Preliminary Changelog
danilop replied to Mike Busutil's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
Thanks, now it all make perfect sense (new subforum etc ...)! -
I've been grounded for a couple of weeks now when the old DCS computer got sold. So my patience is limited, to put it mildly ... :D
-
Not having DX11 support in year 2014 is not cool. And there are plenty of reports that SLI is working correctly in DCS: for exapmple: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1775960&postcount=1 Anyway ... I really want R9 290 (OCed to 1.2 GHz, cooled by EK waterblock), but ED is very quiet about AMD support in EDGE. I'll wait, as I said, but ...
-
I'm looking for a new GPU as well. Gave up hopes that ED would take AMD cards seriously (OK, I'm waiting 'till march next year anyway, so there is a tiny probability that they will fix this huge issue). As much as I think that all nvidia cards are plain and simple ripoff, I have to admit that DCS is one of the rare occasions where you are clearly better off going Nvidia route. So, basically it boils down to some kind of GTX 780 performance (going for a single 1440p display). I'm researching new ASUS MARS dual 760 ROG card. It is basically around 780ti performance level (even faster in most benchmarks, it kills 780 easily), it stays at the same temperatures and it's cheaper. The only drawback is about 80w greater power consumption than 780ti based system. I am building a new machine on ASUS Maximus VI Impact mITX motherboard, so there is obvious limitation of one PCIe slot and it seems that MARS 760 is tailor made for such a system.

ON board Sound card or PCI-E one
danilop replied to sotosev's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
That explains it :D Been out of loop for a while PC soundwise (basically around 2007 got rid of my recording studio stuff and all necessary hardware for digital sound work on PC back then - like TC Electronics and UAD DSP cards and such) You couldn't do much without serious DSP power back then. Nice to know! -
ON board Sound card or PCI-E one

^^ Thanks for clarification Dmitry. So the only real advantage (for gaming) of good dedicated sound card nowadays is better analogue audio quality (better audio path - op amps, better shielding and resulting SNR, THD and such), right? -
Yeah, ergonomic part is very important. I read that IPD is critical to motion sickness that some people are getting with OR. Apparently, ORDK is calibrated for IPD of 63-64mm which is your average human IPD. Couple of mm here and there is not critical, but as IPD deviate more from given OR calibration, problem starts. We do come in different sizes and shapes and if they want global and massive reach, highly customizable product is a definitive must. Keeping a close eye on how things are developing in that department.
-
Is there any way to compensate for large IPD (mine's 72mm) and accomodate far sighted vision (+1.5) at the same time?

DCS 1.2.7 Open Beta - Preliminary Changelog

If it has been so effective, why open beta then? :D Actually you answered it just a couple of sentences later: Bring it on! -
DCS 1.2.7 Open Beta - Preliminary Changelog

They should have been more open about it. No need to hide it from community - we know it already. We are here to help. It's obvious that there have to be a major change in the testing process. As you stated, bug squashing has not been very effective so far. -

Fair enough! I guess it's MP stability issue then, isn't it? Current Beta testers are overwhelmed and ED needs much broader tester base to hunt for bugs? -

Agree, that's why there are beta testers and closed group access to beta. So far (as I recall - could be wrong) the community was kept away from beta access to DCS updates. May I ask: Why the sudden change in testing policy? -
DCS 1.2.7 Open Beta - Preliminary Changelog
danilop replied to Mike Busutil's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
^^ Change is guuuud. However maintaining two versions of "reality" is clearly not (1.2.6 and 1.2.7). Online confusion, anyone? Release 1.2.7 without "beta" suffix (when it's ready) and call it done. -
DCS 1.2.7 Open Beta - Preliminary Changelog
danilop replied to Mike Busutil's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
We have plenty of beta testers already and there are lot of members of community who would happily jump in to offer their resources for beta testing. The question is: Why two separate versions then? It just confuses the majority of current and potential customers. And notion that we, as a PAYING CUSTOMERS, HAVE to participate in bug hunting if we want to complain about game not working is just absurd: -

Run a sound recording studio for a God knows how long. Got fed up with it. IT sector now. Peace at last. :)

I don't have to try to make educated opinion about something, right? Like, I never tried to plug myself into 220V circuit to check if it really kills :) Anyway, virtual part of OR is something which no one challenges. I tend to trust when someone like John Carmack endorse the product (I'll buy it when it become stable and available). Just don't see it as a complete game changer for study flight sims, yet.
-
There are a few issues I have with this: 1) Social - playing for hours with Oculus thingie on is sure recipe for divorce. 2) How on earth I could get a real beer while simming with this on? Developing drinking problem? 3) Procedures, procedures, procedures ... perfect visuals are really not that essential (although nice to have) for this great hobby of ours. Serious simming is about following correct procedures which are hindered by Oculus (not able to comfortably utilize keyboard/hardware switches/LCD panels/etc....) For FPS and such (hey, sex simulator would be great, too ) OR is the definitive game changer. P.S. I'm not against OR, I'll get one as soon as they have a stable, working one in stores (which, as always, means second generation product) - just don't see it as a replacement for custom pit + proper surround display setup.
-
Impressive! Now, this (4K) is something which I could negotiate on with wifey ... probably :helpsmilie: ... Three displays are BIG no-no ... :D
-
Fair enough, IF the computer will be solely dedicated to DCS. Go for it! However, if we look at the other recent titles/games - well, at least the choice is not that clear anymore. As a matter of fact, far from it. P.S. "Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet" :)

Whatever you do, don't make final decision regarding GPU (AMD or NVIDIA) until the EDGE get released. At the moment, NVIDIA has the edge over AMD in DCS. However, after proper DX11 implementation in DCS, we could see major performance shift towards AMD R9 GPUs.
