  1. Just flew DCS for the first time with the Oculus Rift 2. The Good.. Huge immersion and potential. The feel of flight is fantastic, and the depth perception makes it much easier to land the aircraft. Positional tracking 6DOF is very good. The 3D is also very good. The not so good As we all know the current resolution is simply not good enough, which makes the terrain, gauges blurry. That said you can see enough of some of the gauges to have a good idea what they are reading. I'm still adjusting but it appears the FOV isn't good enough either, but that could be due to my wide 74 IPD. The consumer version will have to have a physical IPD adjustment otherwise the Oculus will be useless as far as I'm concerned. Definitely noticed the screen door effect in the demos. The higher resolution CV1 display should address the screen door, blurry terrain, and cockpit problems. Some nausea but that could be a factor of my wide IPD as well as the blurry resolution.
  2. DCS P51-D with the Oculus Rift DK2 from a reedit post
  3. My order has changed from PENDING to PROCESSING. Order created at 11:54 of the first day. BC Canada
  4. People are just starting to receive emails saying their DK2 orders are being processed and a tracking number will be emailed when shipped. So its started.
  5. I would imagine most everyone that is buying the DK2 now, are fully aware of the prototypes longevity, and feature issues, and are planing to buy the consumer version on release as well. Some will sell their DK2 a few months before the CV1 release too recoup some of the cost.
  6. The developer has asked the general public not to buy the DK2 prototype as the consumer version will be better in every way. That said it hasn't stopped thousands in the general public, like myself, buying the prototype as the consumer version is atleast a year away. Best guess is a year and half away, the end of 2015. I'm sure I will enjoy more than a few hundred dollars worth of entertainment value with the prototype before I buy the consumer version.
  7. Presumably the EDGE graphic engine and DK2 support will eliminate some of the issues that people are experiencing with the DK1. Not to say there won't be issues for atleast a year after the CV1 consumer release.
  8. I would imagine that the new EDGE graphic engine could be part of the extensive changes.
  9. Being competitive is a good point. It will be interesting to see how competitive people can still be using consumer VR products. It could be a problem with initial consumer versions, but fade away as the hardware improves. Nobody was more competitive than I, but I'm finding age has diminished that urge. Now I believe I would much prefer the far superior feeling of flight that VR provides, than any competitive edge a monitor "might" provide. Considering the vast majority of todays flight simmers, and the new ones brought to the genre by the VR experience won't be hardcore competitive online players. Most will be flying against relatively easy AI opponents that have icons enabled. My hotas system, and voice recognition software will provide hundreds of inputs, far more inputs than I will ever use for WW2 sims, so I won't need to see my Hotas or keyboard to fly. The feeling of presences/immersion will far out-way any drawbacks the first consumer versions might have, for most people.
  10. This time huge amounts of people seem to be blown away by the VR experience even with low detail visuals. So its obviously not all about some aspects of the visual quality. Groups are organizing to fund, develop ,and create VR hardware/software in unheard of numbers. The VR hardware itself will be relatively cheap. The only major problem I see is the high cost of the graphics card and system that will probably be necessary for the best experience. This could cause a bump in the road to the acceptance of VR, but once that levels out the skies the limit. Zahry will be lost in the wilderness for a short time, while tech takes a popular detour, but the roads will eventually connect, and all will be well. :)
  11. I agree, he's definitely made that obvious. I don't think anybody believes any of the prototypes will be perfect, otherwise there would be no need for prototypes. Basing such a negative opinion on prototypes is ridiculous. The developers seem to be in no hurry to develop the consumer version until they get most of it right. That said even the first consumer version could have issues like spotting distant dots. I already have that problem, on a good monitor, but that was easily solved by winging with folks who can see the dots :).
  12. Below is the understatement of the year. Whats even worse the author says very little about the experience. :( E3 2014: DCS, The DK2 Enabled Flight Sim that Flew Under the RADAR http://www.roadtovr.com/e3-2014/
  13. The new rewards looks to be a good compromis. :)
  14. This explains all your posts, thanks. I suppose with your knowledge, and all the free ideas out there, a better VR unit will soon be forth coming. If the OR can't compete, then no wonder Oculus/Facebook are planning to sell their CV1 VR unit at cost. I wonder how many they'll be able to give away before the scam becomes common knowledge. :)
  15. edit......I might be mistaken, I thought the original link said DK2, now I don't see DK2 mentioned.

  17. Low persistence is hardly a marketing trick. Its one of the major features along with low latency tracking that allows most people to enjoy the Rift with far less motion sickness. Thats a damn good trick, not matter how you want to downplay the technology. Just because they are using one tech to solve a problem doesn't mean they aren't investigating other solutions. Thats what always goes on when trying to improve any technology.
  18. What makes people think they haven't tried, or aren't eventually going to use curved displays? This is a long process that doesn't end with the first consumer version. This isn't a matter of just plugging in new displays and already developed smartphone parts. They wouldn't be hiring the best minds in the fledgling industry if it was that easy. Samsungs partnership will give the Oculus access to some of the best displays possible, initially limited by peoples computer systems that will drive these parts. Low persistence has been a huge breakthrough, and I'm sure they are testing and developing other features, we aren't yet aware of that will make the experience even better. Hell they've just started, still hiring, and developing partnerships, but now have the money, to make something amazing happen. Having a solid position one way or the other based on early prototypes is folly. That said, based on the none existent hype generated by the demo of DCS on the DK2, suggests that the DCS community might want to wait for the consumer version for a better chance of a decent experience. I should know more in the next month as I believe my DK2 might be in the first batch.
  19. Again the image is not representative of the CV1. The DK1, DK2, and CVI will all have different resolutions and features. The DK2 is 1080P which probably still isn't good enough yet, but the CV1 will be atleast 1440. Your basing your opinion on the DK1, which I'm sure is valid, but limited, with little to do with the final product. I'll be testing DCS with the DK2 sometime in the next month or so, but will withhold judgement until the CV1 release which should have quite a number of feature upgrades over the DK2.
  20. How can that image be an upscale to the CV1 resolution, when the CV1 resolution isn't known yet.
  21. I assume the screenshot is representative of the low resolution DK1, and doesn't represent the higher resolution DK2. It will be interesting to see how it looks with the DK2, next month, which still won't represent the even higher resolution of the CV1. I can't see the ability to see gauges being a problem with the consumer version.
  22. Its disappointing to see so little regarding the DCS and its implementation of the DK2 at E3, or even much from Wags other than a few pics of a guy wearing the DK2. Hopefully Wags now has a better understanding of what type of system, game settings are required for a good VR experience with the DK2, and will post his findings before the DK2 release in July.
  23. It appears the 190 trailer is using the EDGE graphic engine. I wonder if EDGE will be released about the same time as the 190?
  24. I hope not, but wonder if the DCS Rift demo got dropped. I'm not a huge fan of the current DCS terrain graphics, and would have much rather seen the RIFT demo running the new EDGE graphic engine. Until then a demo running WT might draw more people into the fight sim genre. WT is not better, but it may look better, and easier to get into until they graduate to a more demanding sim like DCS.
  25. No word on the DCS rift demo yet. People who have tried the rift have only talked about a bullet dodging game, a space shooter, an alien horror game, and a new super mario type game called Luckey something.
