  1. We should have a better idea of the system specs etc required to run DCS on the Oculus Rift DK2 during E3 next week. If the Oculus works well it should be a far more immersive experience than flying with Track IR and a HD monitor.
  2. Who knows, but reading between the lines, of past posts by Luthier, in this and other projects, he has problems dealing with his workforce. This change is probably a good thing.
  3. Is it possible to run DCS at highest settings with the DK1, or do the settings have to be decreased for the best experience. If so I'm surprised as the Oculus team has talked about the Rift requiring high hertz and high frames for the best experience. High frames with combat flight sims are sometimes difficult to attain.
  4. I'm not devoted to any hardware company like AMD, INTEL, or NVIDIA. I just buy the one currently providing the best performance. Currently I have a INTEL/NVIDIA rig because it provides the best performance for the sims I use. Now these companies are gearing up to optimize their hardware for VR use, as this Road to VR article suggests. Our systems will be critical to a decent VR experience, so we should start doing some research into our next system with VR in mind. 5. The issue appears to be the difference between the DK1 RGB display, and the DK2 OLED pentile display if infact it is a pentile display. A pentile display has more green pixels than red or blue so they say you only have a true resolution of lets say 1080P when viewed against a green background. Pentile apparantly loses 1/3 of its stated resolution. A Pentile screen can show a larger screen door effect than an RGB screen, at the same resolution, because of the different matrix, so this might be the effect some people are seeing. Then of course Samsung has Super AMOLED, and the even better Super AMOLED PLUS displays. I don't think it has been stated what display in in the DK2 other than an OLED 1080P. If the rumour is true that Samsung is now a limited partner, finding a decent display shouldn't be a problem.
  6. I have no experience with OLED screens, and glean most of my info from people who do, and even then take the info with a grain of salt. I still think OLED is the best choice especially in regards to latency, as high latencies will kill VR quicker than anything else. That said some of the detractors have made what appear to be valid points, and I'm reserving my judgment until I personally see the DK2 in action this July. Knowing full well its still just a prototype.
  7. I agree, reports of the Crystal Cove/DK2 screendoor effect was less at other shows. Some people at ITEC report more screendoor effect when running DCS. Well it won't be long before we receive the DK2 in July, where we can make our own minds up, how much a distraction the screen door effect has on this particular prototype of the OR.
  8. I'm sure that OLED has many better attributes than LED screen especially in regards to latencies, but there are many discussion in the Oculus and redit forums, and users of the DK2 that the screendoor effect is worse. So this could suggest that at equal resolutions the OLED may not be superior to LED. I'm sure the OR team are well aware of any issue these displays might have and are in the process procuring the best display possible within user system tolerances, atleast for the first consumer version.
  9. Combat flight simmers won't be very happy, if the reports are true that the DK2's OLED screendoor effect has very visible black dots. Not to mention the rumour that distance objects become even more blurred with OLED screens. The rumoured limited partner ship with Samsung may be true according to IGN. The alliance is said to the provide Oculus with early access to its next-gen OLED screens, which could alleviate the screendoor/blackdot problem. http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/06/02/samsung-working-with-oculus-on-a-vr-headset
  10. Is there some sort of NDA thats curtails any mention of how DCS looked on the Oculus Rift DK2 at ITEC last month?
  11. Any news on the Oculus/DCS presentation at ITEC?
  12. Two factors with the DK2 should help with reading the gauges. Better resolution, and the ability to lean forward. It will be interesting to see what its like spotting distant aircraft. Can anyone respond that is currently using the DK1? I hear that distant objects can be blurry with the DK1, but wonder since individual pixels can be seen with the Rift, it might enable seeing distant single pixel aircraft easier??
  13. The latest news says the Oculus Rift is still due to be shipped in July, but not sure if that means all the orders at once or a staggered release, depending on area and/or order date. I've order the DK2 as I don't expect the CV1 to be released this year. Probably late next year. I've definitely put off buying a new highend monitor for gaming as any gaming I will be doing will be with a VR headset, and can use any old monitor for my other needs. A three monitor setup are highly immersive, but I doubt it will be anywhere near the immersion, and presence of a VR headset.
  14. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing that COD's Team Fusion, is currently making an MTO map for the version 5.0 patch. That said, DCS may become my go to sim, since it has enabled Oculus VR,.
  15. I'd also like to see some terrain shots. It appears the terrain modeler disappeared after suggesting he wasn't getting any cooperation from the new EDGE graphic development. :(
  16. I don't believe that adding the few Paypal pledges was a major problem. Getting someone to build the website and including software to deal with pledges was probably the biggest stumbling block. I believe one of the latest updates mentioned that they finally had someone working on the website.
  17. The reward changes during Kickstarter were a big mistake, as it caused nothing but confusion. I pledged 250 and received the P51 key a week or so after Kickstarter ended. I think many of the pledge issues could be sorted when they finish building the new webpage. That said I'm more concerned with seeing the sim finished than seeing the rewards. One hundred and fifty thousand in kickstarter monies won't go very far, and Luthier has a history of overestimating what he can get done in any period of time. At this point, I'm sure Luthier is far more concerned about keeping the development alive than dealing with the awards. For me personally, there is no point having a P51 until there is a WW2 theater to fly it in. I have no interest in flying a P51 or FW190 on a modern map.
  18. I got the exact opposite impression from Almazi. I thought he was complaining that he wasn't getting any help/info from people incorporating the EDGE graphic engine into DCS so he could carry on his work with DCS WW2 terrain. Its also very highly unlikely anyone could possibly model Normandy in a few months. If a miracle did happen, Luthier would be posting terrain shots in every update. Personally I'm quite happy with the development so far, atleast with the aircraft work. However, I'm not so sure much of anything has been done on the terrain yet. I would like to see a comment from Luthier on the progress of the WW2 terrain with the EDGE graphic engine soon. That said, we've had more than enough updates to see that things are moving forward especially this early in the development. The website with everyones rewards listed seems to be coming along. I received my P51 key soon after kickstarter ended, hopefully those that haven't will get theirs soon. Although sometimes I wonder if "some" of the those complaining about the aircraft keys, actually funded the project, and are just trolling.
  19. We are getting relatively regular updates every two or three weeks, which should be more than enough this early in the development. Weekly updates may be doable later in the development. There is no doubt that the development could crash and burn, but I wouldn't worry to much unless nothing is heard for a month or so. We know they are still working on the aircraft, website, and manuals, but there was a cryptic statement from a Normandy terrain RRG employee (past?) with some kind of reference to the EDGE graphic engine has sent up red flags.
  20. Any update on the new DCS WW2 terrain has been conspicuously missing, since the cryptic post about lack of cooperation with the EDGE development.
  21. Who knows what Luthier was actually thinking, when he said it, as he has a tendency of over estimate what can be done in a short period of time. or just assumed the community would apply a little common sense. Its not very likely that a sim thats just started development, could have enough material to create twice a week updates with any kind of substance. I think it would be far more prudent to have a terrain/content update one week, and a aircraft etc/content update the next. At least it would give each group of coders/modelers a minimum of two weeks to have something done worth showing.
  22. I never did see a date that these updates would start, or a date the community manager could be hired by. Its amazing anyone would expect twice weekly updates this early in the development, never mind during the holiday period. There is always a chance the whole thing could collapse, but getting our panties in a twist this early in the development make no sense. Usually not enough works gets done in a week worth an update. Every two weeks would make far more sense, especially in the first six months of a development.
  23. Judging by some of the videos of other EDGE map terrains, I'm sure the EDGE graphic engine is quite capable of rendering very believable highly detailed terrain and water. The problem for Luthier is the number of team members he has available to work on highly detailed terrain before the initial release. This won't be so much of problem later on in the series, when the EDGE SDK is released so that users can fine tune, and add to existing maps, aswell as completely new maps. If the initial release is a financial success, Luthier should also be able to add more people to the terrain building crew if necessary.
  24. I'm guessing that Luthier's plan was to organize, and give out the rewards thru a new DCS WW2 website. As usual he's probably been too optimistic on how quickly he thought the new website would come online. Hopefully he'll catch a break at some point, and everything will get sorted sooner than later. :joystick:
  25. I agree, everything will have to wait until the website is up, which will show everyone's awards, and give those that participated the ability to change those awards. That said I received the DCS P51 almost immediately after the close of kickstarter, maybe because of a relatively substantial kickstarter donation.
