You need to use the trim hat on the joystick. Bind the commands to your joystick. The must-read resource you're looking for is the manual that installed with the sim. Read a little bit, go practice in the sim, read a little more, go practice, etc...

Issues with SPI+HUD, COMMS Menu and MGRS Grid
dave4002000 replied to NightstalkerNOR's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Just to let you know you are not alone with this, i have had this happen to me on more than one occasion. However, it has only started recently, has been very infrequent and impossible for me to reproduce. It also seems to rectify itself if i just redesignate the SPI through the TGP(TMS Aft Long / TMS Up Long). I have been playing this since the very first public beta was released. That doesn't make me a complete expert, but i do know my way around the systems in this jet and i can tell you it has nothing to do with inputting the wrong grid reference. What i cannot tell you, is how to make it stop happening. At first, i thought it was something to do with 1.2.2 because i've only noticed it after installing, but i honestly have no idea if it's related or not. ::edit:: Sorry, just read through your post again and didn't realize the people making reference to grid coordinates where talking about a different issue you posted about. That's what i get for skimming the posts, i guess. I don't have any issues with the WP box or comms menu. The only issue i was referencing was the TGP diamond not being where it's supposed to be. -
What to do when connected to a tanker?
dave4002000 replied to WildBillKelsoe's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Just a quick tip if you are having trouble staying connected. Don't chase the boom around. Focus your attention on the tanker itself and just fly formation with it. The boom operator will fly the boom to your jet. Once you are connected, create a mental sight picture of what the tanker looks like through your front windscreen. Make SMALL adjustments to maintain that picture. If you find yourself slipping backwards or forwards, a 1-2% change of RPM should be all that's needed to stabilize your position. There's no need to be moving the throttles all over the place. -
The ground crew will communicate with you and will tell you "Re-Arming complete"...but nothing gets added to your aircraft. It's currently a WIP.

HiJack pretty much nailed it on the head Alienware USED to be good before they got taken over by Dell. Now it's just another dell product. I have a friend that bought a newer dell/alienware, after sending it back to them 5 different times because of something wrong with it, he finally just told them to keep it and built his own. If you have the time and patience to learn how to build a computer, you can save a lot of money and have a much better computer than any of these "off-the-shelf" commercially built ones.

i7-970 + Gigabyte Motherboard combo at newegg $1,300 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.520913 G.Skill 6Gb Tri-Channel set $100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231223 EVGA GTX480 $500 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130551 That'll put you in at $1900 for the main parts. You'd still need a 750W or greater power supply and some other odds and ends. It would probably come to around $2300 for the whole setup. You can save about $500 by not going with the i7-970 and just get the i7-870. 3.2 hexa-core vs 2.9 quad-core. I love AMD processors, i've owned a bunch of them...but, right now, they are behind the curve when it comes to competing with the i7's.

How many gig of ram is too much?
dave4002000 replied to leafer's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Anything over 4Gb is useless unless you are running an i7. Right now, the i7 is the only chip that can handle tri-channel memory. Which means matched 2Gbx3 sticks. If you try to use that setup with any other chip, you will see a reduction in speed and timing. For every other chip out there, the best setup for gaming performance is a matched set 2Gbx2 dual-channel. Obviously, what i'm talking about here is for gaming purposes only. If you run engineering or A/V programs and you are constantly overrunning your page file, then more than 4Gb is going to help you. Another side note: Don't mix and match ram in your system. Only use sticks that are exactly the same and from the same company. A set of matched sticks will always outperform a set of mis-matched sticks. -
I've got everything set the same except Scenes: High Vis Range: High Shadows: Medium Cockpit Res: 1024 I average about 40fps at Nellis and between 20-30 everywhere else. I have yet to see my video card get pushed to the max(usually around 60%), but my cpu regularly sees 100% usage on both cores. I think my next upgrade is going to be a new Phenom (have yet to decide between the Thuban or Deneb)
-
Vid card and ram are borderline and will most likely get by with low detail settings. You'll most likely have to upgrade that cpu though. :: Disclaimer for Blaze :: ;) My post here reflects what i see in the current beta. This beta is not finalized nor optimized. This beta release does not, in any way, reflect the performance of the final game.

The bullseye is a fixed point on the battlefield that everyone references. It will be displayed on the TAD as a large bullseye symbol. The numbers are bearing and distance FROM the bullseye. Example: AWACS calls you with bandit information "Hog 1-1, Sentry 1-1, nearest threat bulls 040 for 35" That means that the closest enemy aircraft to you is on the 040 radial FROM the bullseye and is 35nm FROM the bullseye. Then it's a simple matter of looking at the TAD and figuring out where that is in relation to you.

^^ now that's friggin SWEET! lol, i'm definitely going to have to try that one

Everyone needs to remember that the mavericks are now modeled correctly and very close to real life performances. We are all used to the stupidly long range locking capabilities in other sims (which is unrealistic). If mavs had that long of a range, A-10's would be used as a SEAD platform instead of CAS. ;) I get these mavs to lock at 5-7nm all day long. You can't expect them to lock something they can barely see over 10nm away. Set TGP as SOI Point track target with TGP (TMS FWD Short) Designate SPI (TWS FWD Long) Switch to mav display Slave mav to SPI Narrow FOV Redesignate SPI Then, as soon as you let go of TMS FWD Long, immediately press TMS FWD Short to lock. I will redesignate SPI with the mav from about 10-15nm out (if i have the time and space) I will wait until about 5-7nm before i try to lock. If i hit TMS FWD Short and the mav doesn't lock. I will immediately switch back to TGP and start the targeting all over again. I don't play around with trying to slew the mav back onto the target, unless i happen to be running in with an extremely smooth approach. Sometimes i'll miss the lock at 7-8nm and by the time i run through the steps again i'm at 4-5nm..which is plenty of time to launch the missile and break away.

Three Questions (Maverick, JTAC, Airspeed)
dave4002000 replied to theox's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
:doh:haha...sorry about that -
If you're in a dive and your airspeed is decreasing.....your speedbrakes are open ;) But seriously, i would think you would at least hear some buffeting seeing as the brakes on this thing are like barn doors..lol Who knows..could very well be in the works and just not implemented in this early beta

Three Questions (Maverick, JTAC, Airspeed)
dave4002000 replied to theox's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
IIRC, RCtrl 'P' will bring up a window that shows your control axes. Quick way to check your calibration in-game. -
I completely understand why you made the guide. :) Being able to create a new flight plan on the fly is useful. My question was directed more at why go through all those procedures in the jet to create a new flight plan..when rotating one dial on the AAP allows you to cycle through the mark points the same way
-
Excellent guide!! My question is, what is the advantage to doing all that instead of switching the steerpoint dial to "mark" and cycling through them with the DMS with the HUD as SOI? I may be missing something, but that seems like an awful amount of work to accomplish the same thing?

Three Questions (Maverick, JTAC, Airspeed)
dave4002000 replied to theox's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
In the shooting gallery mission, between WP2 and Fence In..i'll climb to about 12,000ft and level off...speed stabilizes around 280-285kts at full throttle. And that's with full fuel, 6 mavs, cbu105, target pod and gbu-38's on every last available pylon. Comes out to around 98% MTOW. Flaps will come up at 185kts regardless of the switch position. Make sure the gear is up, speed brakes are closed and check your throttle calibrations. -
Amazing how fast the "When will it be released?" threads turn into "Where's the beta update?" threads. I can only imagine the threads that are going to be created when the update isn't released two weeks and one hour after the initial release. I love the information that's available and shared on this forum. It's just getting harder and harder to find it because of all of these types of threads.

very low Beta Frame Rates eventual program lockup
dave4002000 replied to Asp's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yes Blaze, we get the fact that the beta is not optimized. Don't think it's necessary to post it in every single thread regarding performance issues. Especially when we are talking about the hardware listed in the OP's post ;) -
As far as GCAS, yes..you need to activate rdr alt...i've had that issue with the CCIP shortly after takeoff. I've found that if you cycle through your weapons then switch the hud back to NAV, the msg goes away.

very low Beta Frame Rates eventual program lockup
dave4002000 replied to Asp's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
The 8800 will be ok with low-medium settings on the current beta. Your CPU might hold you back though. Granted, it's a quad..but sims like this run better with a higher raw cpu speed rather than multiple cores. To the OP, Your ram and gpu are below minimum specs and that is what is causing your lockups. If turning every graphic setting down to the bare minimum doesn't help...i'm afraid you are either going to have to do an overhaul to your computer, or wait until the final release when things get a litle bit more optimized. And even then, i'm not sure your current configuration would do all that well.
