life expectancy of heli pilot in vietnam
dave4002000 replied to muamshai's topic in Military and Aviation
Oh man, i can only imagine the crap he got about that when he got back to base. Both from the CO and his fellow pilots..lol One of the documentaries i've watched stated that a heli pilot in Vietnam was twice as likely to die as a normal infantryman on the ground. I don't know if that's an embellished fact for the show, or not. But either way, those are some pretty tough odds. -
How do I have a moving group stop to be picked up by Huey?
dave4002000 replied to Robert1983NL's topic in Mission Editor
The 'Hold' task can only be associated with a waypoint. The "quick and dirty" method would be to set numerous waypoints along their route with the same hold and stop conditions. Then once your clients get inside the zone that sets flag 11 off, the infantry will continue to the closest waypoint and then stop there. Like i said, that's a very dirty method of doing it. There is, most likely, a more elegant solution available from lua but that's over my head. -
I apologize if this has been asked before but i couldn't find anything about it. Here's the situation. I currently activate a B-52 in mid-air and then explode it immediately within the same trigger. I'm doing this to create a visible crash site for a CSAR operation so the players can find the general location before i activate the stranded crew on the ground who then pops smoke for extraction. My issue is that the black smoke plume seems to disappear faster than say, a tank i blew up with a mav. Are there any tricks i can use to get that black smoke to stick around longer? While i was typing this, i just thought about using a timer to trigger some small secondary explosions once the B-52 hits the ground. If i make the explosions barely visible (say a value of 1 or 2), will i still get the same size smoke plumes?

I haven't played with these yet but, according to the change log "AI Task" just got renamed to "AI Task Set". From there, i'm assuming you can use a flag with "AI Task Set" to set a task for the AI but they won't actually execute that task until you trigger the "AI Task Push" from somewhere else. ::Edit:: Sniped by the master ;)

You cannot compare FSX and DCS. They are completely different platforms designed for completely different purposes. FSX is a civil aviation sim. If you want to fly military aircraft on well designed missions, you are going to be sorely disappointed because it was not made to do that. I've been involved with the MSFS series since 1995 and fly FSX a lot. True, you have to spend some time and money to get FSX to a respectable level but, in my opinion, if you have any interest in civil aviation, it is worth it. I have a pilot license in real life but i can hardly afford to fly anymore so I mainly fly general aviation aircraft on the VATSIM network and am VERY picky when it comes to the aircraft i fly. The default aircraft and a lot of add-on aircraft are complete junk, but there are quite a few diamonds in the rough out there with excellent flight dynamics. The RealAir Legacy and Turbine Duke are two of my favorites. Pair those with a RealityXP GPS system and you can't beat it for simulating worldwide GA flight.

The following is a legitimate question for you. I'm not trying to refute your claim in anyway. Would the 4-blade setup on the EC135 make it less susceptible to VRS than the UH-1 with it's 2-blade? Or does that not have any measurable effect on it?

I don't quite understand what you are replying to in the quote there but i was under the assumption that it was capable of doing both. Either, generating a type of 'noise' blanket or using a RGPO type STT deny. Now, granted, i didn't do any work with the -131's when i was in the service so all that might just be hearsay i picked up over the years...lol.
-
From what i understand, ECM effects are barely modeled, if at all. For the longest time, the -131 on the A-10 didn't do anything other than look pretty. I don't know if that has changed, i haven't tested it much. I still do a couple flashes before beaming for an incoming SAM, but i think that's more of a good-faith gesture than anything else..lol. In regards to leaving an ECM pod on all the time, there are many drawbacks to doing so. The biggest one, is the fact that you broadcast your presence to anyone in the area with an air search radar. Radar systems can pick up a transmitting ECM pod farther out than they can see an actual aircraft. They might not be able to track you specifically, but they definitely know you are there. Radars all have a 'burn-through' range as well(distance varies by radar type), which means that inside a certain distance, the radar is able to over-power your ECM and lock you anyway. So, by leaving your ECM on all the time, all you are doing is broadcasting your position to any nearby enemy units who then just have to relay that info to the closest fighter. He will then close on your position very quickly, get to burn-through range, and give you a nice missile to the face. Or, if he's carrying some HOJ equipment, you'll be dead even faster because he doesn't have to close with you as much. Best practice for the ECM is to leave it off until you really need it. If you get launched at by a SAM: 1)Flash the ECM a couple times (on/off/on/off in quick succession) while dropping chaff 2)Turn to put the missile (or SAM site if you can't see the missile) on the beam (your 3/9 line) 3)Wait until you can see the missile is actually a missile and then slice hard into it while dropping a couple more packs of chaff. 4)Pray ;) Remember, the -131 only works in arcs in front of, and behind, the aircraft. It doesn't do anything to the sides. So there's no point in having it on unless the locking radar is directly in front of, or behind, you anyway. Has anyone done any significant testing with ECM's in DCS lately? Does it work any better than it used to or is it still, pretty much, non-existant?

I believe he's talking about the lower left corner of the HUD that shows what sensor your current SPI is being derived from. If that is the case then, AFAIK, that's the only place to see it. It's easy enough to keep track of though. Whatever display was SOI when you did your 'TMS Up Long' on will be the sensor used for the SPI. That won't change until you manually change it yourself to a different sensor.
-
I'm assuming you are talking about the 'pipper' on the hud. 'Pickle' is a term used for when a bomb is actually released from the aircraft(i.e. when you press the weapon release button) You can change the weapon mode with the Master Mode Control Button(MMCB). That will cycle the HUD symbology between CCRP, CCIP and NAV modes. I don't know the default keypress, but just look for something like MMCB in the control config. There's a button on the autopilot panel you press to engage or disengage. The toggle switch is just for changing what mode you want the autopilot to be in. I, believe, the default keypress for the autopilot engage/disengage is 'a'.

I don't know how much i'm allowed to say here on a public forum so i will keep it simple. There are ways to get around that country specific block. Just do some google searching.

This is an amazing video. It's definitely worth taking the time to watch the whole thing. Thanks for sharing!

Amazing story! Thank you for taking the time to share it!

When learning to fly, i was repeatedly told to not pay any attention to the ball if i could see the horizon. Not only for traffic awareness, but because it's easier to fly a coordinated turn by just looking out over the nose. Now granted, i've never flown a huey, but i would imagine you're just obsessing :) Transitioning into a hover should be done with your eyes completely outside the cockpit. Pick a point on the horizon and lock the nose to it. Pretend the ball isn't even there.

Map icon should be visible on the ground

Ha, well look at that! I never noticed that folder before. I wonder what other gems have snuck in that i've missed..lol -

Airfield diagrams are available here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=60370 That's how it's done in real life :smilewink: -
It's amazing how many threads get derailed in this forum with people moaning about the price. If you don't want to pay the money...then don't. It's really that simple. But don't come in here whining about not wanting to pay an extra $10. Just as a frame of reference. Guess how much i paid for the A-10 when it came out....$60. Guess how much i paid for the KA-50 when it came out...$50. This aircraft is no different. It's a high-fidelity model that has taken a lot of hard work to produce. Thank you, Belsimtek, for your hard work and dedication in recreating one of the most iconic helicopters ever built.

Sorry, but i'm with SimFreak on this one. If someone doesn't want to take the time to use punctuation marks, I'm not going to take the time to read whatever they are trying to say. It's just basic forum etiquette. Grammar and spelling can be looked over because English is not a first language for everyone. But, at least ATTEMPT to make it easy to read instead of crying about how no one helps you.

The 55mm penetration is for the AP sabot round. Penetration for the normal AP-T round carried in the KA-50 is around 18-25mm @ 1000m.

Like Wichid said, same caliber but totally different weapon system. The A-10's GAU-8 isn't an autocannon. It's a Gatling gun with multiple, rotating barrels. The autocannon is more along the style of conventional automatic rifles(but fires shells instead of cartridge bullets) and uses a single fixed barrel.

Same thing happened to me. I've flown the Shark since BS1 was released but it quickly started collecting dust once the A-10 beta came out. I finally upgraded to BS2 during the last sale and haven't touched the A-10 since. I think I actually did forget how much fun the Shark is :D

Cockpit display resolution only applies to the MFCD's. Increase your texture quality to get rid of the blurry text in the cockpit.

He already said he is using the trim, why would you suggest it again while trying to make it sound like he doesn't know what trimming is? Toby, i think the setting Rico is talking about is the "Force Feedback Enabled" checkbox in the Misc. tab on the options screen. Make sure that is checked. Double check your joystick calibration outside of the sim and then check all your axis assignments in the sim to make sure you don't have any extra inputs coming from other controllers.

I'm almost positive what you are looking for isn't possible. As soon as you, asymmetrically, change settings in a weapon profile, those stations now get treated as separate munitions and are not able to be rippled together
