Super squirrely at 30k feet...what I did wrong?
Zilch replied to Zilch's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
The bombers were cruising at 30k but dropped to 25k for the bombing run. Also, any advice on prop RPM? I was keeping 2700 but am curious if a lower RPM/pitch might take a bigger bite of air per revolution. Any validity to this at high altitude? -
I was trying an MP mission where the P-51 side is supposed to escort bombers to a target. Of course, they're cruising at 200 indicated and I'm trying to keep up while climbing up to meet them at angels 30, which takes me the entire transit to the AO. I met with them just as they got jumped by 109's and 190's, so I turned to meet the bandits. I had assumed that I'd outperform the German fighters up this high. However, I found that every input I gave the aircraft sent it into a spin or at least a one-wing stall. Dogfighting was out of the question (and of course AI planes suffer no ill effects from altitude, damage, energy loss, etc...ever) and the German planes zoomed around like nobody's business, carved up the bombers and then took shots at me before I broke away. What's up? I thought the Mustang should have advantages up at 30k, but instead found that it was extremely unstable, uncontrollable and totally at the mercy of the AI fighters. I tried using "silk hands" to dampen the effects of the violent loss of control, but this instead left me flying almost in a straight line and thus an easy target. There has to be something I'm misunderstanding.

Heya! As mentioned in the title, I was trying to get the same effect I have with the A-10's MFCD's with the Mirage's VTB, but instead of improving anything, my VTB is constantly just black screened. Any of you lua veterans able to chime in? My .lua contents are below. VTB_init.lua And my monitor setup lua: I assume there's something obvious I overlooked. Thanks in advance!

Yeah, that's what I figured about the F-20. Just a pie in the sky idea. Unfortunately the only one left is dangling in a museum, so it'd be cool to see a virtual one fly, at least.

OV-10 Bronco and F-20 Tigershark.

This is actually an interesting dynamic. The pilots I used to speak with were referring to the training that takes place from Key West, Florida. Normally, when I think of trying to defeat a fighter that has better radar, I'm going to want to hide in ground clutter and ambush them as they fly past or something similar. The funny thing is, Florida and the surrounding Caribbean area is about as 2D as it gets. There is nothing to hide behind, and the land is about as flat as the ocean around there. Somehow, the instructors in their F-5's were able to get the drop on F-18's and Harriers with those cool radars, and the earlier F-14 with its giant flashlight. I should have asked more about how they did this when I had the chance. I did note that the Hornet pilots found the F-5's to be extremely frustrating to fight against because they were notoriously difficult to see and tended to pop up in the rear quarter after it was too late to get away from them. Apparently, once they get saddled up, there's not much you can do to escape.

The Navy and Marine pilots I spoke with in the past were all terrified of the F-5 when flying their F-18's and Harriers. Not only does it stand a chance, it can dominate in the right hands. It's all in your tactics.

Against AI, I failed to shoot down a few MiG-15's and a Su-27 before my ammo ran out. Also, I'm still losing lock and detection in STT and radar isn't detecting targets I can see with my eyeball...did the patch address this or am I doing something wrong?

It is going to be awesome.

Thanks...just in case anyone else needs a quick reference, I found this in the manual after I asked...it figures.

I can't seem to find this magical fuel shut off valve. :) Can someone point me in the right direction?

If I were rich, I would personally finance an F-20 for DCS.

Caucasus Map Texture DLC by Starway

Waiting with my finger on the mouse trigger... -
I love all things COIN, so yeah, totally, especially the glass cockpit version because my Thrustmaster MFD's need the love. :) Off topic, but if it were between this and the OV-10, I would vote for the Bronco about 100 times! It's one of the most versatile aircraft ever made, which makes it a mission builder's dream come true.

DCS «MiGs versus Sabers» tournament discussion (EN)
Zilch replied to chn6's topic in Турниры, чемпионаты и соревнования
No problems waiting! I could use the practice, anyway. -
I'm hearing you on that. Unless you're within 0.4 nm, they don't die. But, at that range, the guns shred you.
-
It would be cool to see the different rocket launchers, bazooka tubes and bombs that different countries used for COIN.

The Five Maneuvers That Were Prohibited In The F-14 Tomcat
Zilch replied to KesMonkey's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
If that last gif is playing in real time, the F-14's roll rate was batshit crazy. -
I have to say, the Mustang cockpit seems very much to be designed by someone with a lot of common sense. It's one of the most ergonomic I've seen.

I'm very interested in any replies! I'm about to upgrade my video card specifically to run a 3 monitor setup with DCS (and I do love my Mustang!)

Another consideration is the gun mount itself. A crew served gun mount on top of a tank is likely to be shredded by GAU fire, even if the tank itself survives. The likelihood of a crewman sticking his head out of the top of a tank that just got hit by AP rounds to shoot a 30 caliber MG at the tail of a Hog on its egress is very low. At the very least, the gun is probably going to be pretty hot! People have been saying to fire the GAU from a longer range, but this reduces killing power by a lot. If you get close enough to be lethal, the whole tank platoon is spraying you.

I think I read somewhere that the newer A-10C versions have a color camera in that TGP, along with the JHMCS and some other stuff. The Hog we're flying is a bit behind the times, so in my mind this tweak just adds an option for a different kind of realism. Cool to have the option.

Rad stuff Boberro! Do you know if this will cause any multiplayer issues?

If the A-1 gets made, my entire Top 10 list will be on the pipeline, except the F-20 and OV-10.
