  1. There was another post here a while ago about how the Pacific Theater would be a perfect addition to DCS because of its relative simplicity; you model some period-appropriate carriers and ships, add a bunch of water (maybe an island or two) and Bam, you're good to go. I fully agree with this sentiment. A Zero would be fantastic to fly and fly against.
  2. 1. SeaQuark 2. http://forums.eagle.ru/member.php?u=108134 3. SeaQuark 4. Count me in!
  3. Montage of some aerial victories, all online PvP. Filmed on the DoW and 9.JG27 servers. I really hope DCS 2 brings in some more players and makes battles like this more common. Fighting the AI is all well and good, but PvP is where DCS WW2 really shines in my opinion.
  4. I also have been flying on the JG27 server lately. No problems so far with lag despite my distance to the server (I'm in the US). Sometimes the Allies are outnumbered, but sometimes it's the other way around. Don't forget to use their TS server: http://www.9jg27.com/teamspeak-on-air
  5. Actually I plan on playing as RIO first and foremost, it's the main draw of the F-14 for me. I'm a big fan of teammwork, communication, and systems management, so the RIO role seems tailor made for me. I'm also not that familiar with modern jets yet (I mostly fly the WW2 planes), and taking a supportive role in the backseat for an experienced player seems like a great way to learn. If anybody knows of any good documentation on RIO procedures & technique, let me know, as I'm keen to start studying in advance of the release.
  6. Just finished a video I took on the server a while back, thought I'd share: One of the more successful sorties I had on Mudskipper. BTW if anybody knows NetMan's forum handle please let me know so I can send him this. Haven't seen him around in a while.
  7. I think that perspective makes perfect sense for a real-life pilot who wants to use flight sims as a means of honing his craft. But if you're trying to immerse yourself in an authentic "WW2" experience, then start-ups, taxiing, take-offs, and landings are a huge part of that. For me, personally, it is half the game. Think of it this way, if people want to fly WW2 planes and get into the action quick, there's any number of options out there: War Thunder, Cliffs of Dover, BoS, etc. What makes DCS unique is that 100% of the plane's systems are accurately modeled, and have to be used correctly. That's why we're all here, despite DCS' obvious shortcomings as a WW2 game.
  8. Count me in for 100% realism, that's what makes DCS DCS. However, I agree that mission range and scope can be limited to increase "playability." I felt that the DoW Killer Bees server (when it was around) offered a good compromise in this respect, but I personally had no problem with the other missions. Startup options: always cold start Map Settings: no aircraft icons visibility aids: no aids Required time to find combat: I think 5-10 minutes is the sweet spot for me. Less feels too gamey, more can feel like a chore to some people, though I don't mind sometimes. Objectives: just air combat, or simple objectives that require ground attack Weather: good flying weather or mild crosswinds or clouds AI aircraft: Some, or many. AI are a necessary evil unless you have a suitably large player base, which DCS WWII will likely not have for a while. Hunting enemy AI with a human wingman is still a very rewarding gameplay experience for me. TS availability: optional. For me it is a necessity, but new players have to start somewhere, and many will not want to jump into TS without trying the server first.
  9. !! Just saw the news. This is a real shame. DoW is the best option available for DCS WWII online, and its 24/7 availability was a big part of that for me. I tended to be online at off-peak hours, but still had tons of fun flying with SnowTiger, NetMan, and other friendly virtual pilots from whom I learned a lot. I was on 2 or 3 times a week. It was also great to fly knowing the server was open to the community-- you never knew if you were going to run into an AI, a novice, or an expert pilot on the other side. It kept things interesting. In retrospect I regret not formally applying for DoW membership earlier and showing my appreciation for what you guys provided, but I was waiting for my flying skills to develop. Thanks for all the time & effort you guys must've put into the sever, I got a lot of enjoyment out of it.
  10. I get all that, I've spent untold hours tweaking track IR settings. What irks me is the way the mod automatically adds vertical Y head movement when looking up. Is there a way to keep the mod's horizontal "neck" but remove the vertical one?
  11. I am using this mod with TrackIR in the P-51, and the horizontal movement it's very helpful for checking 6. However, the "neck movement" when looking up/down I find distracting for operating the gunsight; my sight quickly vanishes with even the slightest movement up or down. Is there a way to keep the side-to-side neck movement, but restore the vertical neck to default? I can't seem to find the relevant values in the .LUA
  12. I'd be super excited to participate in something like this. Looking forward to hearing more!
  13. Stunning material. And great, unobtrusive use of audio to enhance the effect. Kudos to whoever put this together.
  14. Thanks a bunch! Works great again.
  15. Hmm, haven't been able to join the server for a couple days, "Connection Interrupted." Is it because of the recent DCS update? Mods aren't causing it, and I haven't had a problem with other multiplayer servers.
  16. For some reason I can't find the Oxygen knob or Flight Control Alternate/Reset switch in the controls menu. They seem to be accessible only by clickable cockpit. Every other control I can map to my HOTAS or keyboard, but not these ones. What's the deal?
  17. Alrighty, makes sense. Stickin' with 7.
  18. Getting a new PC soon. Is there any reason to get Windows 8 with it, or should I stick with Windows 7? Pretty much all I will be running on it is DCS and maybe a few other flight sims (BMS, IL-2 Cliffs of Dover).
  19. These look great. One question, will the Sim register a key input when the safety covers are opened or closed? Or only when the switch beneath is flipped?
  20. That sounds perfect! Thank you, I will give that a spin!
  21. That works OK, but I liked the idea of being able to efficiently check 6 simply by turning my head, and not having to move around in the chair. You end up doing it so often. Might just go with that. I was hoping to use Track IR for all viewing purposes, but it seems difficult to get my settings to work smoothly for all needs-- checking 6, checking instruments, tracking a target to the front/side, tracking a target while zoomed in, etc. I see lots of gameplay videos where people's TrackIR looks totally effortless, so maybe I need to keep fiddling with my settings, or just get better at it.
  22. I'm finding it awkward to check 6 with my Track IR5, have to strain upwards in my chair to see over the in-game seat. Is it possible to somehow link the Yaw and Y axis, so that whenever I turn my head to look over my shoulder, my pilot's head will automatically lift up, so he can see over the backseat of the P-51?
  23. Just curious, what are those purple things clipped onto your Saitek throttle for?
  24. OK, this is all very helpful. Is overclocking even something I should worry about? Since I am about to buy a new CPU, I should just get one that can ace DCS by default, right? What CPU speed would be sufficient for this task? This is interesting, I didn't know you could assign functions to cores manually. How does one go about that?
  25. I recently received a hefty Amazon gift card balance, plus I qualify for their no-interest-for-12-months thing. So I'm thinking it's finally time to get a good rig. I'm starting from scratch: all I have currently is a MacBook Pro, which is of course less than ideal for DCS. Is it possible to find on Amazon a good gaming PC (or PC + parts) that will allow me to run DCS at: • 1920x1080 • MAX graphics • 60 FPS even My price range is between 1000 and 2000, assuming I can purchase everything I need from Amazon. Is this doable? I'm willing to mess around with parts a little, but not sure how I feel about building a PC completely from scratch, as I am a total newb at that sort of thing. Also: should I wait 'till after EDGE comes out before pulling the trigger? Would it affect what I should purchase?
