  1. Maybe the maintenance crew inadvertently mounted the diagnostic control unit facing backwards in the plane :)
  2. Gotcha, that would explain it :)
  3. That's a good question. For a PC flight sim, they probably just model the general handling and performance characteristics based on published data, without going into the nitpicky detail of the actual shape of the airframe at a given load factor. So, they program the flight model to reproduce the behavior of the airframe at a given speed, altitude and AoA/sideslip combination determined by the manufacturer's test data, it's implemented in the sim using lookup tables, instead of modelling the physical airframe and constantly analyzing it in real-time and trying to determine its behavior based on a kind of consumer-level computational fluid dynamics model. That would be my best guess since it makes life much easier for your CPU, as well as your wallet.
  4. Just curious if it's up & coming :) I don't know exactly where it is, so I'm not sure if it should be on the map at all. It would be mighty cool if it was though :) Peace
  5. You seem to be focusing on jets; but considering that DCS is a fantastic prop-plane sim as well and now has four excellent late-war prop fighters... My vote is for the Yak-3 :)
  6. Do you really notice that they're much faster? I'm curious because normal SATA SSDs certainly are faster than hard drives, although I have a bit of a hard time benchmarking my SATA 3 SSD (Kingston SSDNow V300 240GB), it shows up in HD Tune etc. as barely faster than a hard disk sometimes, but is obviously faster when I use it--just nowhere near "10 times" as advertised, maybe twice as fast if I'm lucky. The little M.2s are marketed as much, *much* faster than regular SATA SSDs, but aren't much more expensive. That's why I'm wondering if there's any kind of 'catch' :) Peace
  7. Greetings, Has anyone tried out one of those little M.2 drives? I just noticed my new Asus Z170-p has an M.2 PCIe x4 (32GB/s) port on it, and I just recently figured out what it does :) Are these little boogers really as zippy as advertised? Like the Samsung 960 evo? Man that would be cool for loading big DCS World missions! Just curious :)
  8. A 29 with an accurate PFM would be great! The new cockpit and external model are really nice, but without a PFM, who cares? I don't fly the MiG-29 because of that, and I'd really like to fly it again. It's 2017 now and SFM doesn't cut it anymore :)
  9. Usually the stress test and benchmarking feature in CPU-Z. I use the temp readouts in Speedfan.
  10. The RAM is running at package-stated speeds and timings: 3000 MHz, 15-15-15-35. CPU is going 1 GHz faster than stock (45 multiplier). No voltage increase was needed; seems to be good the way it is. It starts to crash when I go up to 46 though :) Might need 1.3V or more to get close to 5 GHz; doesn't seem like it needs it though. Now I need a decent vid card. Any recommendations? GTX 1060 6GB sounds good to me, a little pricy though, I wish I could find one used.
  11. I know, but I just used the XMP setting in BIOS and it happily runs at 3000 MHz @ 1.35V as it says on the package, no problems. System seems rock solid. All CPU cores and CPU Cache run at 45 multiplier (4.5 GHz) at 1.28V, no problems at all. I'm still sorting out all the new functions in Asus AI Suite 3, looks like there's lots of them... I might be able to get it going faster. It runs *really* cool, barely hitting 50C on all 4 cores at 4.5 GHz. Looks like I got a good CPU. Whew! :) Peace
  12. OK everyone, I just scored an Asus Z170-P mobo, an i5-6600k, and 2 X 8GB GSkill DDR4 3000 MHz 15-15-15-35 RAM modules. The new CPU runs cool and OC's to about 4.4-4.5 GHz at stock voltages (about 1.2V). The RAM happily runs at it's rated speed, I haven't tried overclocking it yet and probably won't need to :) My ancient GTX 760 is really performing well in 1.5--around 180 FPS with all details *maxed* where I used to get 30 or 40, and with the same old vid card! I gotta try it out in Nevada soon and try to figure which card I'll get to replace it. Looks like I'll hafta change my sig now :) Peace and happy warfare!
  13. Problem is, 970 only has 4GB of VRAM, 1070 has 8GB :) I'm glad they're finally putting enough VRAM on viddies these days, but I'm still somewhat in the dark as to whether my older system will detect and use all of it. If I knew for a fact that it wouldn't, I'd just get a new mobo/RAM/CPU bundle and forgo the vid card for a while.
  14. I bet it is, I'm just wondering if my ancient box would detect all 8GB of VRAM, that's all. I'm looking into a new mobo, RAM, and CPU, but geezuz those dang CPUs are expensive! (Especially if you want a good one!)
  15. Maybe I should hang on until DCS 2.5 comes out. I bet the new Caucasus scenery will be a system-killer :) I'm thinking about getting a new mobo, DDR4, and CPU combo instead of a new card, but holy smokes are good CPUs ever blinkin' expensive!! Oh, man! And LGA 1150, 1151, 1155, 2011... who the heck can decide. I got tired of all that years ago, that's why I stuck with my 775! :) DDR4 and the mobos that use it are mercifully cheap, though.
  16. That's what I was thinking, but my 760 2GB does not cut it anymore. I'm thinking of getting a used 1150 or 1151 mobo with DDR3 or 4, just 'cause it's cheaper than trying to stuff 16GB of ddr2 into my box :) Everyone says a 1060 or 1070 will work, and my Q9650 runs at 4.0 GHz or more, so it's not an issue... just trying to keep everything cheap. Even used unlocked i5's are not cheap! :)
  17. Transfer bandwidth isn't too big a deal with 8GB on the card :) I just hope to heck it will all be recognized on my non-UEFI system. My computer is actually decently fast, but aching for VRAM...
  18. Very cool, thanks so much everyone, Imma bite the green paper bullet today. :) Peace
  19. Sorry to plug up the forum with another thread but has anyone tried using a GTX 1060 or 1070 with an older system yet? I still have my P5Q (Core 2 Quad) system and want a newer card. Buying a whole new computer just to use a newer card is out of the question :) Will an older system running Win 7 x64 access all of the VRAM on a newer card, say, 6 or 8GB? Or is there some kind of video card RAM limitation on older non-UEFI systems? Thanx Ian
  20. Hehehe I put a bit of thought into that one :)
  21. I know you didn't mention it, but have you considered FC3? As far as bang for the buck goes, it's pretty much at the top--four different ways of delivering numerous different bangs :)
  22. OP, that's how your new OS is better than your old one! Everything runs slower--that means it's doing more!!
  23. I do everything computer-related with my box, but I'd call it a DCS rig because if it weren't for DCS, I'd probably have given up all this computer nonsense many years ago :) It doesn't matter what rig you put together, or how much you spend. It doesn't matter how many reviews you read, how many pages of technical specs you pore over for months while choosing components. Any given computer, when on your desk and running, is obsolete, and you're always bitter about having outdated stuff that you can't properly upgrade, and have to fork over far too much money for the latest and greatest "future-proof" stuff just to see it becoming un-upgradeable in 6 months to a year, and then you buy a new system and are back on the 'need new computer again' bandwagon 6 months later. I learned that lesson many years ago. LGA 1150? Nope, not good enough. Need ONE more pin. LGA 1151? Nope, that'll never do. Need four more. LGA 1155? Can't possibly get enough done with that. LGA 2011 V3? Oh, come one, why waste time with outdated tech. C'mon Intel, just create an LGA 10,000 spec and be done with it for 10 years before you need to develop LGA 10,001. I gave up at LGA 775. My dedicated DCS Rig: Read system specs below. Peace and happy warfare :)
  24. I know, but for DCS I'd rather stick with Nvidia based cards. What I was originally asking was whether or not newer cards like the 1060 or 1070 are compatible with my older P5Q system.
  25. I got some beers and a new shirt :)
