Hi guys, just thought I'd share this since it happens from time to time. If you're using a Freesync monitor (like me) and experience sudden framerate drops combined with jittery/stuttery movement, remember to use CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) to lower your minimum Freesync range. Since Nvidia has supported Freesync for quite a while now, lots of people are using Freesync monitors with Nvidia cards--but, it's important to keep in mind that Freesync, by default, works from 48 Hz up to your monitor's maximum refresh rate (75 Hz for me, HP Omen 32".) So, use CRU to reduce your monitor's minimum Freesync/G-Sync range to 25 Hz or so, so that way, when DCS bogs your system hard and the framerate drops below 48 FPS, your monitor doesn't switch out of Freesync range and into "generic" Vsync, which will cause framerates to crash and lots of stuttering. I'm having good luck using the current Nvidia Studio Ready driver (460.89) with my Freesync monitor--but, only after editing/lowering the minimum Freesync rate to 25 Hz from the default 48 Hz, which was set when I installed the driver. Once you've done that everything runs nice and sweet Peace and happy warfare AD

Without too much jibba-jabba, YES, it's entirely normal for DCS to eat 16GB of RAM. Even if you have a graphics card with more than 8 GB of VRAM. Because of that, lots of people are now building their rigs with 32 GB of RAM. Try the Syria or Channel maps now that they're free to try. They're unreal--and will eat memory for breakfast, lunch and dinner. 11 GB on the graphics card is showing its limits (1080 Ti here), and it's only a matter of time before you need 64 GB on the board and a 16+ GB graphics card to play flight sims. Which, if you ask me, is actually kinda cool AD

Wow, looks like I created a monster when starting this thread Anyway, I'd prefer a complete module at release with fully-developed flight model, ONE decent skin, and a couple types of fully-developed air-to-air missiles, and a couple types of fully-developed A2G weapons with properly-working targeting system (if applicable.) Everything else can come after. Obviously if they're modelling an A2A-only version of the Typhoon then A2G systems need not apply. Just my own preference, instead of releasing a huge, half-baked pile of stuff that will never get finished. AD

Ok, I just updated to the latest Nvidia Studio-Ready driver, version 460.89, and deleted my fxo and metashaders2 folders. Now I get white and black flashes instead of yellow ones. Still have some experimenting to do... I've only flown the WW2 fighters on the Caucasus map and not Normandy yet. AD

It's frustrating because I like to use the HUD diamond to 'steer' the TGP toward a target on the ground, then use the cockpit display to fine-tune my aim before chucking something at it. I figure that's how it's supposed to be done anyway, but it's almost impossible with the current setup. It's much too inaccurate for that, I have no idea what I'm looking at on the TGP display when I plunk the HUD diamond on a ground target. It's way off. AD

Yeah, but you can watch kickass live shows on various video hosting websites, I'd rather not see them in my flight sim

That's good to hear, I will try playing with NVCP settings and the like to see if anything helps or gives any insight. BTW I'm not trying to rant. OK, I'm ranting. But, we love our sim and spend a small fortune on it, and this has been around for a while. You could just re-write the whole graphics engine to use Vulkan API, that might fix it AD I like big WW2 furballs with 32 planes in the air buzzing around like a swarm of hornets I'm surprised at how good the performance is overall, although there's a little stuttering that's tough to iron out. The flashing is like a light show at a rock concert. AD

This is driving myself, and many other people, absolutely bananas and MUST be fixed. I also just tried turning off XMP memory overclock, running some older versions of Nvidia drivers, downclocking my CPU, CPU cache, GPU, and VRAM, and deleting DirectX shader cache as well as metashaders/fxo, and running without G-Sync or V-Sync, and nothing fixes it. It doesn't happen in any other game--only DCS World. This sim is *much* too expensive to put up with this. Many people are having this flashing/flickering problem. Not much point in developing the sim any more if this can't be resolved once and for all! A long-time customer who's wallet is much lighter and is frustrated blue in the face with this, AD
-
All right... Just did a HUGE down-clocking of my CPU, GPU and VRAM all together. About 1/3 slower. Still yellow flashes. Happens with G-Sync on or off. I guess it just tells us that the problem is the sim itself and not hardware, although I could try downclocking my system RAM too I guess.
-
Ok, I just tried the 432.00 Nvidia driver, deleted metashaders & fxo. Complete removal of previous driver with DDU. No difference. Still lots of yellow flashing. This is REALLY starting to p*ss me off. How long until ED fixes this for good? 6 months? A couple years?
-
I think I'm gonna try that. v432.00 you say? I'll see if I can find it, we both have the same graphics card too. AD

Noticed this a lot myself, and it's really annoying. That being said, I have no idea whether or not it's supposed to be like that. AD

Nvidia DSR causing crash to desktop?
Aluminum Donkey replied to Aluminum Donkey's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I prefer to always use the latest driver when possible. Fewer bugs & glitches in other games. Graphical bugs in DCS are pretty much always related to the sim itself, not the driver, so may as well use the latest one because everything else works better. AD -
It seems to be caused mostly by the WW2 fighters. Other modules don't seem to do it, at least not for me. There has been a report (with video) of the yellow flickering occurring with the Hornet module. I haven't had it (yet!) AD
-
I just flew a couple missions over the Caucasus map with WW2 fighters. I do get some of the dreaded yellow flashing above the horizon like so many other people, but not as much as over Normandy. So, the WW2 fighters seem to actually *cause* the yellow flashes--BUT, the Normandy map makes it much worse. Flying jets/helicopters over Normandy doesn't seem to do it. Possible shader bug caused only by the WW2 fighters? Speaking of which, I've noticed the propeller discs flickering as well in WW2 modules (not yellow, just flickering textures.) Dang, I hope ED gets this fixed soon, because performance in DCS is better now than it's ever been, and I wanna fly it, not just pork around with it! AD
-
Exactly. It happens constantly for me in Normandy, I haven't noticed it in the other maps. Which really sucks ass, because I really like the Normandy map! I also have framerate drops in Normandy, it runs like a champ at 60 FPS (I have the framerate clamped at 60) but sometimes tanks down to 20 or so... Changing to external view and back again sometimes stops it and it goes right back up to 60--with constant flashing all the time. Downclocking my GPU and VRAM does not fix it. Looks like the Normandy map itself is chock full of f*cking bugs, good luck ever getting it fixed. This sim is way too expensive for this kind of rubbish all the time!! AD

Nvidia DSR causing crash to desktop?
Aluminum Donkey replied to Aluminum Donkey's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
You mean, reduce the DSR factor to a lower number? I'm using 2x, which renders twice as many pixels and then down-scales it to fit the screen. It's rendering at less than 4K resolution, which is no problem. I'm using a GTX 1080 Ti with 11GB of VRAM. Performance is excellent, visuals are amazing, and the darn thing keeps crashing! I just went back to the in-sim MSAA 2x for now, which looks pretty nice on my 2560x1440 screen. I wonder if this will get fixed. It's an Nvidia issue, nothing to do with ED/DCS. AD -
Flappie, Thanks so much for posting your complete system specs. Interesting that you're using a GTX 1080 Ti, that's what I'm using as well, and performance is still very, very good for an older card. Other than that, it doesn't look like your system is all that different from anyone else's. It's not like you're using a Xeon processor with 512 cores or whatever they're up to these days I really hope we can solve this soon, because the constant flashing is annoying as all hell. AD
-
That's awesome, care to share your secret? Because tons & tons of people are having it, and absolutely nothing seems to help. AD
-
Greetings, I'm using a 1440p monitor with Nvidia DSR set to 2x. Not only does it look awesome, but it allows much higher FPS than the in-sim MSAA or SSAA, so I really like using it! Problem is, it causes the sim to crash to desktop. Any ideas on how to fix it? I'm using Nvidia driver 460.79, on a GTX 1080 Ti (11 GB) if that helps. AD

wishful thinking Did ED sneak in another preview?
Aluminum Donkey replied to Dannyvandelft's topic in Chit-Chat
The latest and greatest are the most fun to fly because they have the best flight performance. I'll take a Typhoon over a Tornado any day! An F-22 Raptor would be cool, but not possible, so Typhoon it is--and that's awesome! I've given up holding my breath for the Typhoon, though. 3-5 years if we're lucky. I'm 44 already and can't be bothered waiting for years just for a video game, if they ever release it that's cool, but it'll probably get dropped in a couple years. That sort of thing always happens. That's why I insist that developers should DEVELOP the module first, and only after it's ready to fly and fight with, announce the release. That way they don't piss off their prospective clientele by having everyone waiting for years, then say that it's been cancelled! Personally though, I'd really prefer it if ED would fix the yellow/black flashing, just so we could fly the sim we've blown hundreds (thousands?!) of dollars on over the years, and just enjoy it for what it is. The sim engine is buggy as hell and they have to fix that before worrying about more new content for a buggy sim engine. Any new modules they announce is just like installing a new turbo kit on an old car with a blown cylinder. my apologies for hijacking the thread AD -
I'm not so sure why this thread is called "Strange Graphical Glitch", because it isn't strange at all. Everyone has it! Man oh man is it ever annoying. ED is gonna have to step up and fix it, no other game has it and it's irritating everybody. Time to fix what's broken instead of worrying about trivial things like new tanks and new textures for oil barrels. AD

wishful thinking Did ED sneak in another preview?
Aluminum Donkey replied to Dannyvandelft's topic in Chit-Chat
Not to be a buzzkill, but instead of yet MORE modules they'll never finish, how about fixing the stupid yellow/black flashing? It seems that just about everyone has it, and no effort has been made to fix it. Su-34 is a newer Russian aircraft, no way to legally simulate it with any level of detail. AD -
Do you have the latest update installed, version 59398? The WW2 damage model stutters are fixed (whew!). Flashes are still happening for me in Normandy. I don't have the Channel map. They seem directly related to explosion and fire effects on the ground, and show up when various aircraft have been shot down. No mods for me either. The sim is running very smoothly now though, and I have gotten better performance by turning off all MSAA and SSAA in-sim, and only using Nvidia DSR, set to 2.25x. It increases my pixel count from 1440p (native) to 4K, which uses more VRAM, but it's also easier on the GPU itself, so I get higher framerates. It looks better too, try it! If you're not using Freesync/G-Sync, then you will get stuttering when the framerate drops below your monitor's refresh rate. Just the way it works. AD
-
It still does it. The really bad stuttering with WW2 fighters (new damage model) has been fixed, but the yellow flashes still happen. I see it all the time flying in the Normandy map, but others have noticed it elsewhere as well. For me it seems heavily related to G-Sync use. AD
