Great post :) AD

Not sure what you're getting at, it's an excellent, high-detail 3D model. The reason it's not so appealing to look at is because it's an A-10! Still a great module though, and pretty much everything in it actually works. AD

Opinions 27 or 32 in. monitor for 1080p
Aluminum Donkey replied to Roosterfeet's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
More bigger is always more gooder--but, it also eats more of the green stuff. Also, if you get a bigger monitor that has the same resolution as your old one, it's just going to look really rough, so you'll need to apply more anti-aliasing, which will require a more powerful GPU, in which case you should have gotten a higher-resolution monitor, and that will need an even more powerful GPU, and you're in a circle that never ends :) I'm running a 1080 Ti with a 2560x1440 screen and it's very nice. I'd love to try a 4K screen, it would need less anti-aliasing, but might cause my 1080Ti to choke, and then I'd need a 2080 Ti, and... well, too much cash for me! :) If you really want to stick with a 1080p monitor, just keep your existing one for now until you have enough cash on hand to get a 1440p or 4K monitor and a hefty graphics card to run it (RTX 2080 or GTX 1080 Ti minimum). If you want a 1080p monitor, stick with 27" and buy one used if possible. It's pretty decent, but not great, and you'll want to upgrade soon after anyway. 32" at 1080p will look rough. AD -
Possibility of Mig 21 Landing and aerobraking as seen IRL videos.
Aluminum Donkey replied to jojyrocks's topic in MiG-21Bis
You can aero-brake just about any aircraft with tricycle landing gear as long as the elevators have enough control effect. Doesn't matter what brand of plane it is. Just hold the nose up after touchdown and there ya go. Some planes will plunk the nose gear down hard after main gear touchdown, so you have to 'grab' it with back-stick and hang onto it--ideally without dragging the exhaust nozzles on the runway, which really miffs the maintenance crew :) I'm lazy so I just use the drag chute. Mig21 and fighter maneuverability in todays terms
Aluminum Donkey replied to Dirty Rotten Flieger's topic in MiG-21Bis
Since it's a delta wing with a very steep sweep angle, the MiG-21 ought to be able to cope decently with high-alpha flight. High-sweep deltas are supposed to be good for that, despite the lack of leading-edge root extensions (LERX). And just for the record, your screen name is a total hoot :) AD -
I'm not entirely sure how, since the F-16 is hard-limited to about 9g and there's no way to bypass it. It's an inherent limit in the entire flight control system. It's not like an F/A-18, which has a G-limiter bypass switch on the stick, and an F-15, which has no G-limiter at all. Considering how the F-16's wings are made of rubber, I can't imagine them surviving 12g. They look like they're gonna bust at half that :) AD

I haven't noticed anything screwy about the MiG-21bis with regards to the handling qualities, but holy smokes is it ever anemic now! It barely gets out of its own way even with secondary afterburner, no external weapons/racks, and no external fuel. Maybe the real thing really does have leisurely acceleration, who knows... Frankly, I've never flown a real MiG-21. It just seems really underpowered now, even when loaded lightly and nothing on it to produce drag. Getting it above Mach 1 takes forever and a day. But, and it's a big, hairy, sweaty but, if the real plane is like this then that's how it should be. AD

Here goes, hope it works Also, is the new driver any good? I'm using 451.67 right now, and when I get one that seems to work decently I haven't the balls to try a different one unless I'm really bored. It might screw something up and reverting to the previous driver won't fix it :) AD dcs.log

You aren't the only one. I don't have the Channel map, but I see it a lot in Normandy. Other maps don't do it, I have NTTR and PG, as well as Caucasus of course. For me, it's the top half of my screen that flickers. It appears to be white or bright yellow for a frame or two, then goes back to normal. I wonder if it's the actual map itself, or if it's indirectly related, i.e. some graphical detail of Normandy (and the Channel) is causing it. I also have weird shit going on with clouds in Normandy... the whole lighting going bright and dim all the time depending on camera perspective. Might be related to the flashing, but it might not be. It could very well be a shader error, not that I know anything worth knowing about all that. It's been a full 35 years since I've been involved in anything to do with computer graphics, coding & jive at a nuts-'n'-bolts level. These things were meant to try us :) AD

Yeah, as if that ever fixed anything :D AD

Doesn't seem that bad for me, mine was only about 1.6 GB. Did you skip any updates? Couple recent ones were huge. Just fire it up and leave it on overnight--good to go in the morning. AD

Adaptive Refresh *is* G-Sync/Freesync. You're thinking about Vsync, which is different--it limits the GPU render rate to to refresh rate of the monitor. G-Sync and Vsync can be used together. I usually do. G-Sync does not limit the framerate to the max refresh rate of the monitor--that's what Vsync is for. AD

53756 update causing lots of flashing when clouds on?
Aluminum Donkey replied to Aluminum Donkey's topic in 2D Video Bugs
I noticed it a lot in Normandy as well, less so in other maps. Gamma Correction "Off" certainly seems to have fixed it! Peace AD -
If you're using Adaptive Refresh (Freesync/G-Sync) then make sure VSync is also turned on in the graphics driver, but not in the sim. It will clamp your framerate to the max allowed by your monitor, but will not introduce stuttering when the sim is running at the max FPS. If you're not using Adaptive Refresh with DCS... then, you're on your own :) Besides, since you forked out a small fortune for a mighty PC, you should know how to use Freesync/G-Sync anyway. It kicks ass--use it! Used together with Vsync in the graphics driver, it produces the ultimate smooth, stutter-free and tear-free experience. AD

53756 update causing lots of flashing when clouds on?
Aluminum Donkey replied to Aluminum Donkey's topic in 2D Video Bugs
It may have been related to Nvidia Gamma Correction. When set to Off it barely does it. I thought it may have been my graphics card memory overclock, but that doesn't seem to be it. Definitely seems related to Gamma Correction. AD -
53756 update causing lots of flashing when clouds on?
Aluminum Donkey replied to Aluminum Donkey's topic in 2D Video Bugs
could get around to that one day I guess :) I was just wondering if anyone else has it. No clouds seems to be no problem. Happens to me a *lot* in Normandy but happens elsewhere too. AD -
2560 x 1440 works great in DCS, you'll love it, the option for the resolution won't show up until the monitor is up and running. Great resolution for gaming in general and it's really nice for DCS. It gives nice detail without the godawful 'straining' that 4K can put on your graphics card. AD

Cargo transports? Nothing says "Fun!" like sitting in front of your computer watching a couple gauges, flying in a straight line with your hands off the controls for 8 hours. Anyway, Eagle Dynamics could probably release a high-fidelity module of a Cessna 150 that's missing half of its control surfaces and only runs on 3 cylinders, and somebody out there would love it :D AD

Why is this thing so slow?
Aluminum Donkey replied to DCS FIGHTER PILOT's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Are you sure you're running the engine at max speed (3000 RPM)? Hold down PageUp to set the propeller governor to max RPM. Apply full throttle and press E to engage WEP. The P-51 is very fast because of its low drag, but it's quite heavy for its engine horsepower so it'll take a while to get up to speed. Also, it won't do the oft-quoted 437 MPH at low altitude. Try getting it up to ~25,000-30,000 feet or thereabouts for speed runs. AD -
Has anyone tried the 10900k yet?
Aluminum Donkey replied to james111333's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
It isn't even IPC. We need the very best single-thread performance for DCS, and often gaming in general--but especially DCS. Higher IPC but lower clock speeds give no performance increase, and likewise, higher clock speeds and lower IPC performance gives no improvement either. We're at the stage now where improving single-thread performance for consumer grade computers has become extremely difficult and exorbitantly expensive. The sweet spot is supposed to the i5-10600K, which offers great single-thread performance when overclocked, but isn't outrageously expensive like the higher-up ones. It's still expensive as all hell though--and here in Canada it's impossible to get, as well as Z490 motherboards. Neither are ever in stock. A 10600K costs about $450-$500 here, if you can get one, and that's a lot of dough for a very low-performance paperweight. Which is exactly what it is with no motherboard! AD -
It's very good. Granted, most of the map doesn't have anything in it, kind of like NTTR, but the built-up areas are spectacular. I often get better performance in the Gulf than in Caucasus. I'm not one of those 5.5 GHz i9-9900K guys with 64GB and a handful of 2080 Ti's, but I have a decent rig. It's DCS World--you need a hefty computer. If you're happy with the performance in Caucasus, you'll probably like the Gulf. AD

I always thought a little universal on-screen display would be a great idea. Option to turn it on and off for different modules, in the "Special" tab. AB1, AB2 etc. for afterburner stages, one for flaps, one for gear, that sort of deal. Percentage throttle whenever you move it a bit, Radar On/Off/Standby... essentially, updates on-screen for every setting or change you make while flying the aircraft. Kind of like that other sim we dare not mention. AD
