From the cockpit it still looks good. But with external views and now with Combined Arms, being able to see much more detail due to being closer, the special effects are showing their age.
I had a X-52 Pro and went to an all CH HOTAS setup. I just love the CH Fighterstick it is amazing compared to the X-52 Pro. The range of motion is very big allowing you to delicately control your aircraft with precise movements.
Although I have not tried the X-55, any CH products gets a big tick from me.
A lack of visual damage on all DCS aircraft is a big drawback I have noticed coming from other flight games/simulators. In IL-2 1946 if you hit an aileron enough, the aileron would come off etc...
