I can't believe the MiG is marked as early access! I believe it was the first 3rd party module released... I have both the MiG-21 and the M2K. The MiG is the only module I wish I'd never bought. As bkthunder suggested, maybe you should go to the subforum, and I suggest you check out the bug tracker to get some idea of the features that aren't as they should be. Even though this bird is marked as early access I wouldn't expect features to be added to it. By contrast the M2K is probably my favorite module, but the aspects I love might make you dislike it. The Mirage can feel like a very modern plane (I think someone said it's supposed to be circa 1987) with its full HUD, INS navigation, autopilot designed to minimize pilot workload, modernish radar and BVR capability - to me that's a good thing, but if you're looking for an older fighter it might not be right for you. If you're looking for a fun fighter with speed to burn and you're happy enough to learn and apply its modern systems, I'd definitely suggest you go with the Mirage. If you are more inclined to go for something older, before you buy the MiG I'd suggest you take a look at the F-5 Tiger II. In the little time I've spent flying it I haven't had the same impression of speed that I did in the MiG, but it's a beautifully simulated contemporary of the MiG 21 that was used to imitate it in Red Flag exercises. If you do want to go for the MiG-21 it's probably worth taking a look at the subforum so you're going into it knowing what to expect.

Wow, good to know! Any idea where I could get that app?
-
Ah ok, so it’s the effect of the maneuvering, not the g load itself. Thanks for explaining :)
-
It would be great to get a standalone DCS Encyclopedia app I could use on a tablet or phone before, during or after a mission without needing to get out to the in-game menu. While I and others fill this need through Wikipedia right now, I'd much rather use the game-relevant information provided by DCS itself than relying on the accuracy of both Wikipedia and the sim. I imagine making such an app could be resource intensive, but I'd happily pay for it and I think others would too.

When a pilot is deciding whether to launch a missile at a particular target, should that pilot take into account the number of G the target is pulling, or does that not matter provided the missile can remain within its own flight envelope? Reworded: Are there any constraints on the max number of G a target can pull and still be tracked, or is a missile bound only to its own max G? Either answer is fine (after all, you have to draw the line on detail somewhere), just trying to work out if pulling G alone could be a valid defensive tactic against some missiles.

** DCS: F-14 Development Update - September!! **

Then if it's just a pilot body stuck to a hang glider you'll be the only satisfied one here :P -
I agree with this, the tutorials usually take about 20 mins, and if you don't want to do the flight focused ones you can always skip to the weapons employment tutorials, and if they get boring that can be an indicator that it's time to move on to bigger and better things. The instant action missions are worth a look too, they generally start airborne at the target location so you don't have to spend time on startup and transit, useful if it's the dogfight you're there for ;)

I realize now that I worded the OP badly. The question I should have asked was "is contact detection expected to get easier, or can I solve this through improving my application of it alone? In other words, I should have been clear in acknowledging that this behavior may be due to a faithful recreation of the RL radar rather than a bug needing to be squashed. Edit: To be clearer still (not my strong suit): “do Razbam intend to mitigate this from their side, or do I need to find my own answer?”

SP, I haven't been into MP at all so I don't know if it happens there... It is most common in the instant action missions "Missile Combat" and "Constant PEG II", but then that's mostly what I play so that might be coincidence.

I asked if this was bugged so I wouldn't waste time trying to figure out something that was just working wrong. Since there's no known issue I'll let this rest here and go back to trying to find a technique that works :)

Ta. I know at least some of the time it was hot because they flew right past me (or into me on one occasion), but I will stay mindful of that.
-
Will do, I was kicking myself for not thinking to post about this before deleting my tacview files too. That might have been the case for some, but several showed in tacview as being within 1k feet of my altitude at a range of up to 20 nms, so I'm not sure antenna elevation could be the cause of those...

I’ve often had hostile contacts directly in front of me and physically visible but not present on the radar screen at 4 bar scan, +- 60 degrees azimuth, PPI or B-Scope, low, high or interleaved PRF and within 20 nm with scan range at 40 nm. Is this a known bug? I did find some older posts about a B-Scope specific bug that made targets disappear after showing up. Does anyone know if there is a B-Scope bug like that in effect now?

The MiG-21 does have the RN-24 and RN-28, but I don't think they'll give us any others. In the F/A-18C Hornet FAQ Wags specifically says nukes won't be available for the Hornet and I can't see them adding nukes to the older airframes. Given that nuclear explosions aren't modeled in the game (the RN-24 and RN-28 just have the effects of large conventional bombs) it would take a lot of work on ED's part to add that aspect to the game, and I think Wags' unqualified closed response probably sums up ED's lack of motivation to do so. Personally I can see some merit in it, and showing just how difficult and dangerous it is to get nukes to the target and apply them without hitting your own personnel could provide some insight re the practical difficulties of using these weapons beyond the ethics of it. All that said, good luck, I hope you get them :)

I've been getting crashes lately, which is unusual for me. I had just put mine down to the fact I've been flying the Mirage which is known to have some CTD bugs, but that could just be an accident of timing.

Glad to hear it, I had been wondering if it needed to be reported

So... anyone else get the option in the openbeta menu for an English cockpit, but see the same old French when they actually use it?

Anyone else crossing their fingers when they open each edition of the DCS weekend news? -
Be-zer-ker!

They update the OP with new information. If you look at the bottom you’ll see Cpt Smiley edited it August 26th.

Haha, this is actually one of the things I was worried about, I'm completely learning from this and other games I've exclusively played single player, so I didn't want to give multiplayer a go and destroy someone's k/d ratio because I didn't stick where I should have been. Ok, this gives me an idea of the basic form and function. Primary is keeping eyes on lead and knowing where the rest of the flight is during BVR/WVR transition while being spread enough to be monitoring different pieces of sky, and datalink allows greater spread due to better SA. Awesome, cheers Understood, much appreciated. What I'm getting here is that line abreast is the standard formation, and I guess spread would be 1 - 3 nm. So for single player I can go with line abreast with spread of 1 nm so I can see everything I need to, and experiment with greater spacing if effective. Multiplayer I guess I'd be safest presuming line @1 nm, check the spacing between the others and let the lead open up the formation if he wants to. Many thanks :)

Fantastic, thanks for this info. It's great to know that the Mirage has a move that should give it an advantage over everything else, now I know what to practice and perfect :joystick: Appreciated :)

Cheers, I've been able to successfully defend against AMRAAMs a few times now!:pilotfly: Thanks for the help and patience O7 I did have Tacview but haven't used it properly in the Viper fights. It has definitely helped me see what's going on and when I've successfully notched. :smartass:

Wow, thank you so much, I’ve been struggling to put together a game plan for weeks. Will be away from my PC for a few hours, but I can’t wait to try this, very much appreciated!
