I like the rift S, coming from the original rift which I found unusable in DCS I suppose it was easy to be impressed though. I was kind of interested in the index but am also from Canada so that isn't happening. I like VR for regular VR games though too so I am wary of anything with shit controllers.

I'm kind of new to and learning the module, but something seems to get borked up after losing a contact or breaking lock. I'm not sure what because I haven't learned to use the backseat yet, and am controlling Jester with vaicom pro, but basically whenever I lose an STT lock or break lock, he won't re-lock a target. I can call target single bogey ahead over and over and he will just say no can do. Then I call wake up, it resets his state, and he instantly locks a target. I've had situations where I call wake up and he refuses to reset also, in which case if i give some other command, like scan range auto, then wake up again, he will reset and start finding targets again.

Really i find the way the hand controllers work in the cockpit to be awful, at least for the oculus ones. You have to hold your hand facing up or down to switch between left versus right click mouse action and it's cumbersome as hell to use just one, like try to click something behind and to your right with your right hand with your palm facing upward. You would have to use two and mostly they are more an annoying novelty. Using the mouse is fine to me.

I just got in the habit of closing my eyes during load screens, and holding very still to avoid the eyestrain. The text menus kind of artifact a little bit for me when using them in flight, like if I am in the keybinds, I assume that's the asw or whatever you call it on the oculus.

I've had this happen multiple times on Mission 2 of the caging the bear campaign tonight, right at spawn it would read zero on the carrier deck, moving the dial would do nothing and clicking the little flipper on the right would do nothing to the left and get stuck with a STBY flag if flipped right. I tried exiting the game and doing a repair and it was working when i went back in, not sure if the repair is to thank.

The only game I tried virtual flight controls in was no mans sky, and it was horrendous. On thingiverse they have these printable magnet mounts for the touch controller that makes it so you can clip them in to the armrest on your chair with a magball, that would probably make it at least somewhat liveable.

Beware of consoles with the trying it out with someone who has it thing. Someone I know was trying to run PSVR on a non pro play-station and it was so crappy and sickness inducing he wrote off VR as completely unusable and sold it.

When you say the outside is not as good, does that mean if you say looked to the corner of your eye to look at an instrument while focused on the hud, you would notice a blurrier image? Or do you mean you just really have to take a lot of care to get the IPD and positioning of the headset just right?

I have the rift s and like it a lot. Tried with the original rift and it was unusable. I didn't really know about the reverb till I read about it here, and it is interesting. Well I knew about the first one but didn't know there was a good newer model on the market. To be honest the smaller sweet spot and fov thing does worry me about it. Personally I like VR for VR as well not just sims, and if I understand right the Reverb has shit windows VR controllers as its only option, so I likely still would have gone with the rift it in the end. I just got a set of prescription lenses from a place in Germany called VR optician and I really recommend them if you have glasses. It's a bit more crisp and more comfortable and the annoyance of glasses getting hooked on the sides, fogged up, dirty etc is nice to be free of.

Suddenly Index flicker (looks like black boxes)
FeistyLemur replied to sk000tch's topic in Virtual Reality
I'm using a Rift S I found I never saw this issue before I had "Fullscreen" checked in the menu in DCS (which did improve performance for me). Then I saw it for the first time. Experimentation seems to show that Launching directly from the start menu DCS shortcut and using the VR dash to a minimal amount eliminates this for me. One surefire way to make it happen like crazy for me is to use the oculus dash and launch DCS from there or from the virtual desktop app in the oculus dash. If you have the Steam version I'm not sure if this suggestion will be that helpful. -
I saw black flashes for the first time last night, coincidentally at the same time I had turned on fullscreen mode in DCS (which greatly improved performance). When I played tonight I didn't see them and found that if I start DCS from the desktop, with the oculus app closed and the headset off, then go in. I don't seem to get them. If I use the oculus app first, and use the virtual desktop however, I seem to get them quite badly. I have only tested this to a limited degree, so it could prove to be wrong. But I definitely never saw a black flash before I turned on the fullscreen checkbox, and I played quite a bit like that.

If you want a full clicky beginner plane, the F5 is great for that. Easy to learn, not very demanding on horsepower graphically compared to say the F14 or F18 which seem to be the most harsh to me. Though if you're not in VR the game seems to run a lot better than I'm used to from the 1.5 days. Only downside is it's kind of twitchy and hands on to fly with no autopilot and the bombing is very difficult and manual. The modules I've had the most fun with overall though are the KA-50 black shark, and the A-10C. You can sink a lot of time into both and have a lot of fun learning the systems if that's your thing, and they have worthwhile campaigns if you like single player campaigns.

I've found I can kind of cheat around this a bit. I have menus visible but not sure if that's required, anyway when the VR menu is pushed to the bottom you can temporarily make it go back by calling Tower>options, then releasing ptt. It only stays there a short while and bumps back down. So mostly I just don't use Vaicom if in a training mission or something. In some of the training missions the text is so long it truncates regardless in the box.

Dear Heatblur, holy cow, what an amazing job!
FeistyLemur replied to TheHighwayman's topic in Heatblur Simulations
The mig 21 bis was always my favorite module because it just had that feel to it others didn't. The first time I winged it and got Jester to talk me through a start up with vaicom, took off and experienced that afterburner kick, things shaking and rattling before I realized I was already at 39000 feet and promptly passed out because I didn't turn the oxygen system on (thanks for leaving that out Jester), it was just like winging it and trying out the mig21 for the first time again. Absolutely love it, the hornet is fun and all but that rough around the edges feeling can't be matched. -
Gotta be a setting, I'm in pretty much the same boat, haven't simmed for a year or two and just got my gear out of the closet and set up again in the last couple weeks. I tried the dogfight instant action last night and if I didn't put it into a spin ham fisting it around that badly it has to be tough to do.

I dunno, are you dangerous?

I have been running high settings at 1.5 pixel density with shadows turned to flat, 2x mssa, and civ traffic off on my 1080ti, this runs pretty good but in the hornet in particular, I get some instances of it dragging down below 40/ So the million dollar question (or rather the roughly $1700 cad question), is how is your 2080ti performing as far as keeping above 40 to stay locked there?

What you don't like the novelty of being able to sit on the wing?

How to get best text clarity Oculus Rift S
FeistyLemur replied to surfcandy's topic in Virtual Reality
I also use 1.5 from the game menu, it's a pretty huge improvement. Is using the debug tool an improvement in some way over just using the game menu? -
How to get best text clarity Oculus Rift S
FeistyLemur replied to surfcandy's topic in Virtual Reality
I just got a Rift S and revisited DCS VR, The last time I tried it was with the original rift and I found it unusable. Happy to say I find it totally usable now. A downside is I could never imagine going back to Trackir on a monitor again. Most text is very readable for me, Probably the worst for readability is the Color center display in the hornet, it just looks pretty awful in general. I have my IPD from the optometrist which worked great. I find for myself at least the tilt of the headset was a large factor in text readability and overall comfort, use without eyestrain. I ended up deciding on a sweet spot where it actually feels a little bit weird how high the headband sits on my head. If I sink the strap down to the point it feels more natural like wearing a hat then it's blurry and causes eyestrain. I would assume this is going to vary greatly based on head shape. But anyway, play with the tilt. Aside from that I also have some prescription lenses on order to try, because I hate fighting with glasses while using it. So I guess I will see how that works out. I got lenses made that way for my FPV goggles and they are fantastic, so hoping it is a similar experience. -
I recently updated and started playing again after a long break, and I set the graphics settings to highest after updating. This was performing like complete crap, 20fps sitting on the tarmac despite the fact i have a Titan X and normally get good performance. The mig21 generally is a bit slower than other modules as well. Anyway, the straw that was breaking the camels back was the 8x msaa that the highest setting enables Turn that down to 2x or 4x because it nukes performance into the ground, even on my 12gb card. After I turned that down to 4x I went back to 144 fps with gsync in the air (at least I think I was getting full gsync speed if I remember, either way the framerate was fantastic). The ground has a tendency to dip quite a bit in airports, and Mirrors can be a big hit on the ground especially, I just turn them off till I'm in the air because coming down below 60fps makes trackir feel like crap. Don't sweat the "it's your computer suggestions", that's just people being people. CPUs have been so stagnant in development for years there is hardly any difference. I have a 4770k myself and when I looked at the CPU charts this month thinking of upgrading there is almost no performance improvement to be had with the newest CPUs in a gaming situation. Content creation like video encoding quite a bit, but little to no gaming benefit. Ram is cheap though so definitely update to 16 gigs of ram if you can.

How I broke my HOTAS in under 30 minutes...
FeistyLemur replied to AJ.eightFive's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
TM support should replace the part, and even if they refuse to it only costs 25 dollars (which while expensive for a 2 dollar piece of crappy plastic is better than writing off a $250 stick). My suggestion is call them rather than email. They never answered anything I sent by email, but they did sell me the same part when I called them wanting to buy a new one. They refer to the "ball" as the articulation sphere. -
VAICOM 2.0 for VoiceAttack
FeistyLemur replied to Hollywood_315's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Really can't say about the checking of frequency it does. I don't think I ever had much luck with multiple jtac if I remember right. I haven't used the a10 in a while. I was able to make it switch with the select one select two thing I think. -
VAICOM 2.0 for VoiceAttack
FeistyLemur replied to Hollywood_315's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I think it's 'jtac select one/two' if I remember correctly. If I also remember correctly it keeps switching on it's own on the multi jtac training mission which makes it more cumbersome to work with. I ended up doing all my training with a single jtac mission. -
VAICOM 2.0 for VoiceAttack
FeistyLemur replied to Hollywood_315's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
On the subject of Mics. Avoid noise reduction software and the like. I got a creative labs card which has the "voice crystalizer" option in the software. It sounds good to the ear and gets rid of the background hiss inherent in cheap mics. But it works terribly with Voice attack, and with Windows speech recognition in general. It works far better even with the hiss in the background. I also tried the Blue Yeti which I have, but it does not work well from the desktop. It's amazing if you speak right into it, but this impossible given it's size and being for a completely different application. And finding a headset condenser mic is a whole other ball of wax (and cost). The best I find is still a plain old headset mic with no noise filtering of any kind. Once you have it trained in Windows it works great.
