The Tomcat actually is said to have shown "proverse" yaw in some cases. Were the Tomcat to roll using traditional asymmetric lift devices at low speeds, it would definitely exclusively exhibit adverse yaw. But, the Tom relied on spoilerons when in approach configuration, which have the opposite effect. That Top Gun clip was probably flown as cleanly as possible, but I bet if the pilot slapped the stick around in low speed with the wings unswept he'd get that proverse yaw. One more interesting thing for Leatherneck to struggle with!

Bad video stabilization. Not even remotely like an aircraft pitching.

The Tomcat had excellent low speed maneuvering potential for its day. It was an aerodynamically complicated airplane, though, and required a skilled pilot to keep things under control at the edge of the envelope. Across its speed range it had a wide variety of effects that change handling and performance. I can't wait to see how Leatherneck handles it!

DCS: F-14A/A+/B by Heatblur Simulations coming to DCS World!

Primarily for ordnance tests and training, not for large scale exercises of our entire Navy against one dummy ship on state TV.

No, TWS does not "soft lock" all targets. It creates trackfiles in more detail for a maximum number of hits/contacts. The TDC slews and designates. The undesignate button undesignates, and with no STT target, creates a L&S target. It's not a simple HOTAS, you're not going to get a more simple answer. Consider that the Hornet has 3 displays, air to air, and air to ground modes. Not only does it have targeting pod options, it also has a radar. You get the idea. More complicated than the F-16, which is similarly (or slightly more) complicated than the A-10C.

Congrats!

The TDC is a force sensing four way "hat" with a button depress function. The Undesignate/NWS button on the stick is a little bit less cut and dry. If you are in AG or NAV, and have an STT target or an A/G FLIR/radar designation, it breaks that designation. If you are in AA mode, it will break STT lock. In ACM, with no STT lock, the radar will return to the previous mode. If you are in TWS, RWS, or VS, it does something akin to "bugging" the target to RWS-SAM in the F-16, which is something most flight simmers are familiar with from Falcon 4.0. In the Hornet it's called L&S or "Launch and Steer" designation. This is a way to slew a weapon sensor onto a target without hard locking it... think Sidewinder. One last function... the FLIR pod can be commanded to track the Velocity Vector by double tapping the Undesignate button twice in one second. I'm not sure if the FLIR needs to have TDC priority for this to happen, but maybe. The Hornet has a very feature-packed HOTAS. Lots of double-presses, long presses, etc.

Military and Aviation News Thread (NO DISCUSSION)

Yeah, not something you want to see from the other side. Basically napalm. -
I want a Jag so badly. :) Nice.

The entire contents of my bank account are at your disposal, sir. That looks awesome. I like the extending idea, but any play/wiggle whatsoever should be avoided! That might be tough to achieve. -
Personally, I think this is a mistake and might waste community enthusiasm. I think one of the big lessons of the last 10 years of "open" game development is never to release something incomplete. RAZBAM is making some really impressive progress, but I don't think you're imagining a realistic time scale. :)

Nice air museums in California/Nevada area?
aaron886 replied to amalahama's topic in Military and Aviation
At Chino Airport near LA, you can see a nice variety of stuff. I'm aware of two different museums there. Lots of flying warbirds on the field, too. Nothing can beat the Smithsonian though, that's a religious experience. -
You might be able to determine the MAR of whatever weapon the shooter expected to face. If your audio is of someone shooting that AMRAAM, you can't infer anything about an MAR for the AMRAAM. Remember MAR depends on the enemy's capability... you're trying to figure out when you should turn and run if you don't want to get down and dirty with their missiles.

Beautiful packaging concept, hegykc. I'd buy this immediately, no hesitation. -
Camera. Long exposure. Almost no night pictures are really admissible as evidence in this case. Points made regarding regional light colors are valid, however. In any case, only the densest lighting tends to throw noticeable areas of light and dark on the ground... In my experience, usually what you see from the air is just the light itself.

[MiG-21 BiS] ASP Block Mod

What kind of Dane are you?! :D -
A lot of air to air weapons have a defensive zone called minimum abort range. It means that if you turn and run at that range from the shooter, you can escape the missile by outrunning it. Since MAR is an enemy weapon capability, it's often based on best guesses or classified intelligence. According to that definition, Short Skate would mean to fire your own weapon prior to MAR, and attempt to abort before MAR. Of course, it would not be a very good tactic if your weapon was not fire and forget. So, in the case of the AMRAAM, for example, you have to be certain the missile will "go active" and will guide itself before you reach MAR. When your missile is active, you might know or assume that enemy missiles are inbound, and hopefully you will be able to turn and run prior to MAR... otherwise you'll have to undergo more violent maneuvering to trash the enemy missiles. "Short Skate" would be a tactic to use primarily if you know you can get your missiles to go active before MAR.

Why is this always someone's first concern?

Nice. I wish I could find more information about the F-102.

Looks fake, but nicely done. Aliasing problems on the rendered sukhoi, unnaturally mechanical head movement of the pilot, IR signature of the Sukhoi's engines appearing and disappearing inexplicably...

The fact was given to you that you are reading a recommended procedure, not an aircraft limitation.
