Interesting. So far, it seems that folks with i7-6700K's are the ones pulling 45/90 FPS in that mission. Yet I've been informed that upgrading my i7-4790K will not get me much gains.

Can I mix these two memory modules?
Bearfoot replied to Bearfoot's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Ah, thanks, you all (BitMaster included) have saved me $1K! I was hoping that the CPU upgrade would solve the 22FPS, but it appears that this would have been quixotic! -
Can I mix these two memory modules?
Bearfoot replied to Bearfoot's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
That makes sense! I though this might would also explain why the other guy is getting 90FPS where I am getting 22? While we are both using just one core, i.e., his single core is doing a much better job than mine? Yep, not much change. Ah, really? This makes me strongly reconsider :( :( :( -
Did you look at some of the other issues discussed in the thread, specifically these: https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3120050&postcount=81 https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3120288&postcount=90 which reference this page: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/894654/help-me-fix-60-fps-stutter-issue-aka-frame-time-issue-/ It ties together the monitor refresh rate and the FPS causing stuttering. Also, I take it where you live does not give you the option of purchasing a new TrackIR and returning it if it does not fix the issue?

Can I mix these two memory modules?
Bearfoot replied to Bearfoot's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have a Gigabyte 1080 Ti Gaming OC. I could run with everything maxed on my 4K without problem. This issue is in VR. With the CV1, I can pull 90 FPS a lot of the time and 45 FPS in others. But there are some times that I crash into the 22-23 FPS. And nothing I have tried settings wise gets me out of that. From this discussion (https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=186730) it seems the CPU upgrade will help? -
How good is the Ka-50 flight model?
Bearfoot replied to TripRodriguez's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
One thing to note that however good the flight model (and everything I have read indicates that it is very good, with the physics and aerodynamics of different sections of the blades and body modeled independently) the Ka-50 flies noticeably differently from a "normal" helicopter. In fact, while it is capable of a lot of acrobatics, flying (as opposed to fighting in it) it is far less interesting than any of the other DCS helicopters, the Gazelle included. It is a very well-trained bird in that regard, by design. Throw in a incredibly capable autopilot, and the fact is you will be doing even less flying, especially in combat, as, most times, the computer will be doing lots of things for you. IIRC, in principle you can have the Ka-50 fly you to the engagement point following the programmed route, you take over for a minute and find a good position, then ask the Ka-50 to hold a hover while you unless fiery steel of doom on the targets, then ask the Ka-50 to fly back home following the programmed route. In principle, at least. And even the basic flying you do requires so much less coordination than the Huey/Hip/Gazelle. -
Can I mix these two memory modules?
Bearfoot replied to Bearfoot's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Thanks! Yes, I discovered this myself by doing exactly what you suggest. As things stand now, I am considering upgrading the CPU/MOBO to a i7-7700K + MSI Enthusiastic Gaming Intel Z270 combo to get more performance! -
So I am thinking of upgrading my current MOBO and CPU, from i7-4790K + Z97 Sabertooth Mk1 to a i7-7700K + MSI Enthusiastic Gaming Intel Z270. The current system is running on Windows 10 Home (Creator's Edition) on one SSD drive, with DCS installed on another. After I swap out the MOBO and CPU, will I just be able to plug in my drives and boot into Windows 10? Or will I need to do a fresh install of Windows 10? If the latter, I assume that I will need to deactivate DCS before I swap out the MOBO and then re-activate DCS on the new machine? If so, is there a way to deactivate all my modules online instead of deactivating it one by one in DCS itself in the old machine?

So a dissenting voice here, to balance the no doubt brimming with enthusiasm endorsements to follow ... I have the A-10C. LUUUUUUUUUURVE the avionics/systems complexity of the A-10C. The problem, for me, was the (a) actual flying (as in pilotage required, or, rather, lack thereof) and (b) the mission. (a) Flying the A-10C is straightforward and simple, to the point that after you get past the basics (e.g., not stalling in a turn by keeping your speed up), the actual flying (as opposed to fighting) is utterly non-interesting. From take off to cruise to loiter to landing, my inner virtual pilot itch was just not scratched. (b) Then there is the "loiter around and bang up a bunch of ground targets" mission. This one got a little old for me after a bit. Sure the jeopardy of this can be increased by increasing AA defenses, and that ups the thrills for a little bit, but the basic mission is still the same. Sure you can use it like on more strike/BAI type mission, and, from what I can make out, this is how most folks actually use this bird for sustained interest. But then, why not go for a strike aircraft like the Viggen? Now, weirdly, I love the anti-ground mission in the Gazelle M/L, Huey (gunship), F-86, P-51D, (and, in the "other" sim: Bf-110, Ju-88, Pe-2, etc.). I think that's because of the piloting demanded by these platforms in conjunction with the mission, rather than just the mission itself. So both of these problems are very, very, very personal and idiosyncratic, and, almost tautologically, will not be shared by the A-10C fans. But that's the key point: liking or disliking an aircraft is a personal choice! The main thing, I suppose that you might take away, is that the complexity of the aircraft is not the issue here, or, at least, the only issue. It is, at worst, something you will be able to deal with eventually, and, at best, you will come to enjoy learning with a passion. The issue is whether or not you will like what the aircraft does once you have gotten past the basic learning curve. (And I say "basic", because the A-10C is like an onion: there are many levels of complexities that you can fly it at, from almost like an A-10A to something like the ECM officer on a B1)!

Is it possible for you to try another TrackIR receiver? BTW. "Clean install of windows and DCS, including formatting all drives, three times now": this truly speaks to your dedication to the task!!! THREE re-installs ... WOW. Respect ...

Anyone getting 90fps in anything with a prop or rotor?
Bearfoot replied to Jamesp1's topic in Virtual Reality
Yes. However, the Spitfire gunsight gets wonky when ASW kicks in. And, for some bizarre reason, with the Spitfire, ASW kicks in almost all the time, even when cruising straight and level up high with nothing else in the sky. In general, for me, it is not so much prop/rotor vs. jet, but how populated the neighborhood is. So, most places I can get 90 FPS, but then sometimes it drops to 45. There are some places where it drops brutally to 25 or less. And some missions where it constantly struggles to clear 25 (see discussion here: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=186730). Tried: both Caucasus and NTTR, using: UH-1H, Gazelle, Mi-28, Ka-50, Spitfire, Mustang, Bf-109, FW-190, F5E, Mig-15, F-86F, Mirage, etc. -

Introducing the VKB-Sim ‘Modern Combat Grip’ (MCG)
Bearfoot replied to rrohde's topic in VKB-SIM Flight Gear
IIRC, the flip up/down trigger guard might actually be an axis ... I recall a discussion about whether or not it was necessary to add some sort of sound or tactile feedback for when it was used as a button. -
I've played around with the settings too, but my FPS in these situations did not change very much no matter what I did. Vegas is brutal for everyone, it seems!
-
That is unimaginable for me. 90FPS ... NICE. So it's really down the CPU, and that's it. Nothing to be done about it, because otherwise our specs are the same.
-
Interesting. I'll have to try disabling the HPET timer, though don't know if that can be done on my MB (Sabertooth Z97 Mk1)

(For those "scanners" rather than "readers", I am putting this prominently here: I am talking about performance in VIRTUAL REALITY, not 2d) NTTR F5E Instant Action Take-Off: 45 FPS on the ground, 22-23 after taking off. :( :( :( So, I'm on the VR train. I've upgraded my video card (from 980Ti to 1080Ti) and RAM (16GB to 32GB), and now am running - i7-4790K @4.4Ghz - 32GB RAM - 1080Ti - SSD - Oculus Rift CV1 General improvements all around. But my "tough" benchmark still fails to pass: getting 45 FPS on the ground, 22-23 after taking off in the F5E instant action take off. No matter what I set PD, graphics settings, etc. to. I get similar performance. If anyone has both the NTTR and F5, as well as VR (Oculus or Vive), would you please share your best performance results? On 2D, I can max out every setting and easily clear 150/160 FPS. I suspect the bottleneck is CPU: it seems that this is a busy scenario, and lots of objects hits the CPU more than the GPU. The same thing with the F5E BFM campaign. Also (and this is VERY annoying), the damned Spitfire gunsight distortion. Which I get even if there is only one other a/c in the scenario. I've asked the developers about whether they consider this a bug to be eventually addressed or just the way things are, but so far stone cold silence. :( :( :(
-
Looking good! What sort of framerates are you folks pulling in VR, especially in/over the tree rich areas? Like, e.g., down low in downtown Vegas on NTTR? Or better?

yet another question of rudder pedals.
Bearfoot replied to marques's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Just me being pedantic, BUT ... It's not plastic, but (mostly) paper! Well, to be more accurate: HPL, which is many layers of paper and phenolic resin (IIRC), compressed under very intense heat and pressure. Final material is very, very, very strong and sturdy, though has to be 30% thicker to have the equivalent strength of metal. Advantage of avoiding metal: no interference with magnetic fields/sensors. To me, it has got a pleasant "wood" feel/quality to it, both in heft as well as in touch. Much nicer than plastic. -
Can I mix these two memory modules?
Bearfoot replied to Bearfoot's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Thanks! I have an i7-4790K: http://ark.intel.com/products/80807/Intel-Core-i7-4790K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_40-GHz?q=Intel%C2%AE%20Core%E2%84%A2%20i7-4790K%20Processor%20(8M%20Cache,%20up%20to%204.40%20GHz) . which says, regarding the 4.4 "turbo" mode: "Max turbo frequency is the maximum single core frequency at which the processor is capable of operating using Intel® Turbo Boost Technology." So it looks like it might be worth overclocking after all to get 4.4 or 4.5 on all cores simultaneously (or, at least, more than one core at that speed at the same time). Motherboard is Sabertooth Z97 Mk i: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH_Z97_MARK_1/ . For the previous overclock, I've been running at Vcore of 1.2 for a while now. Cooler is CM Hyper 212 EVO. -
Thanks for sharing. Luck of the draw -- even the most streamlined, corporatified, complex bureacracies are made up of cogs that are people, and not all cogs are equal! Good to know the highs are good, though ... at least, on your side of the pond!

Can I mix these two memory modules?
Bearfoot replied to Bearfoot's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Ok! (1) Memory arrived and installed. (2) First boot was a no go: power on and off cycles. (3) Removed all sticks and firmly reinstalled them. Then it made it through to the boot. (4) On boot, was told that my OC failed and I had to go through set up. I reset my overclocking to auto and memory AI profile to auto. Again with the power on and off cycling! (5) Cold boot luckily got me back to UEFI. Then I reset everything to factory specs and noted that the various DRAM settings such as voltage, latency, etc. was reset. I did not change any of this myself, but I did go through the motherboard EZ Overclocking wizard once a long time ago and remember the DRAM settings changed. No idea why it was not reset when I set the memory profile to auto. Anyway, this one did the trick: successfully booted to desktop! (6) Rebooted into the Ultimate Boot CD and ran MemTest. All passed!!! YAY!!! (7) Back to UEFI, and set memory AI profile back to XMP in preparation for re-overclocking. (8) Boot to desktop to run IntelBurnTest on Very High: cleared! (9) Currently, running Aida64 now (how long? an hour?) So, so far, so good. Here is the curious thing. My default clock is 4.0. I had previously overclocked it to 4.5. Running the tests (8) and (9) show that the max CPU clock is at 4.4. I assume that this is the "turbo" mode? So the question is: if the default/built-in turbo mode gets me to 4.4, is it worth it to manually overclock if all I can pull out of it is 4.5 max? I remember reading somewhere that turbo mode accelerates one CPU at a time, so if any application uses multiple CPU's then manually overclocking will still be beneficial even if you don't exceed the speed of the default turbo mode. Is this true? -
Same. Maybe even within the first couple of hours in my case. But, yep: no tracking info yet.
