Well, worth a try but I would rather bet on the driver option since it seemed to work properly for @JayRocand I think @Aureliuswrote something about how smooth it runs too. So, motion smoothing must have worked somehow. Currently I am tweaking the 3090 and have to send the 6900 back by tomorrow latest. I'll see what I can do but I have to swap cards again.

Okay, so i found out i can't do it. The latest AMD driver is the 20.12.1. Since support for the 6900XT was added with this driver, i can't take an earlier version. I tried but windows didn't reckognize my card. @Hiromachi You could try this one since it this was the first driver to add support for the 6800 series: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-20-11-2 There is also a version 20.11.3 which i believe @JayRoc used.

If you want to you can try the following to lock or force motion smoothing on. First of all, i would opt in for SteamVr beta (inside steam, right click on steamvr -> settings -> betas). Then you can do the following: In WMR for SteamVr set it like you see in the screenshot. You can do it inside the VR environment or find it under the following path: D:\PROGRAMME\Steam\steamapps\common\MixedRealityVRDriver\bin\win64 and open the OpenVRSettingsUX.exe Next, open DCS in VR an go to the SteamVr settings under "Video" and choose DCS as your application. Then select motion smoothing "force always on". This should lock your motion smoothing to 45fps and give you a much smoother experience. Nevertheless, i will report the bugs to AMD and Steam. I really want the AMD's to work properly! These cards have so much potential, and if motion smoothing would have worked i would be a no brainer for me to keep the card.

It is not really a matter of stuttering. It is motion smoothing which to now is not working properly. To give you an example: Besides of the benchmarks you are seeing in my post, I ran my personal bench with my preferences. A mission in Syria with the A10 starting at Ramat David. With the 6900XT and an SS of 150% (Reverb G1) I was barely able to hold the stable 45fps and motion smoothing on with dips to 30fps low level over city's, while frametimes was around 14-15ms. Normally you should see this behavior (fps down to 30) only when you reach more than 22.2ms frametimes. With the 3090 I set the SS to 206% (which means 100% of the Reverb G2) and the same ingame settings it was rock solid 45fps with motion smoothing on... And I can bump the settings up even more because I am still below 22.2ms where motion smoothing doesn't work anymore.
-
Okay now, i lost it. I unboxed my 3090 (which i didn't want to in first place) and tested it against the 6900XT. Results are: The 6900 is the faster card (see the benches attached), but... With the 3090 i didn't have the reprojection issues and i could maintain a rock solid 45fps even with higher frametimes (around 18ms). No stuttering at all. I also tried the "alt-tab mode" but with the 3090 it didn't make any difference. It sad to say, but i will return my 6900XT and keep the 3090 for now. The reason is, i believe the issues we have are mostly driver issues with AMD which will possibly be fixed with further updates. But unless i'm not certain that it will be fixed, i have no reason to keep a beefy card, where i can't use all of it's potential! Since the GPU is a buy for DCS only (i don't play much other games) it would just make no sence. Maybe in the near future, when these issues are adressed and fixed, i will sell the 3090 and go for a 6800XT. But for now, that's really a no go. Here is the bench of the NVIDIA, look at the frametimes...11.9ms And here is the bench of the 6900XT (alt-tabbed mode). Better average FPS and better frametimes. Really a wonderful card, if it would not have these issues.

You're right. I meant motion smoothness. But if I set this one to force - on it remains pretty smooth. Let me know what you think. As for warping: I didn't notice any of it in game so far, but will have a closer look. In that case it would annoy me too! Good to know, I hope they will at least have a look at it! Thanks!
-
Thank you for the insights! I now know what you mean with text warping. I can confirm, that I also have it, but it doesn't bother me much. When I just turn on reprojection it is also not smooth for me. But usually if you would force it on, it usually remains smooth unless you don't hit more than 22.2ms. In the steamvr menu you can set it to 'force - always on' (hope that's the right translation from German).

The point is, that reprojection also works fine with the Radeon. But as i understand, as long as you're below 11.1ms you are able to reach stable 90fps. Between 11.1 and 22.2ms you should have something between 90 - 45fps. This is the point where reprojection kicks in and adds synthetic frames in order to maintain the smoothness. Only when you are above 22.2ms (<45fps) the whole system isn't capable of maintaining stable 45fps anymore. In my situation everything up to 14ms let's me maintain 45fps. If frametimes go higher (e.g. 15ms), i'll see something of around 35 - 40fps and if frametimes increase (lets say 16 - 17ms) my fps gets locked at 30fps and reprojection isn't smooth anymore. I wonder if the RTX behaves in the same manner or as it should be as decribed above. As for the GPU usage: Yes, it has to do with the allocation we spoke about. I see a lot more GPU usage in the upper region (70 - 95%) when using the "alt-tab mode". Otherwise GPU usage is more of a linear allocation from (20 - 95%). The real problem now is to find out, if it's DCS, AMD or Steam. And even if we now, what causes the problem, will they investigate or do something to fix it?
-
I tried reprojection in "out of window" mode. It works better, but still dropping below 45fps with around 16ms gpu frametimes and green cpu frametimes. I hear your fears. I would at first try another game to see if it happens there too. But the only thing I have here besides of DCS is a VR benchmark program from steam. Also thinking of pulling out my 3090 and see, if that behavior is also happening with Nvidia cards.
-
I really just noticed the same! I am able to hit the 70fps without any problems when i do not see the 2d image of my VR headset! This is crazy! You can see it instantly when opening another tab which overlays the 2d VR image. The 2d image has never affected anything so far, but i could imagine that this is also the cause for my reprojections issues. So how the hell we get rid of that? And I would love to know, if that occurs with nvidia cards too? Maybe it's not an dcs but an adrenaline thing?
-
Basically, look at that last post and follow the instructions written in green: Next, download ddu Uninstaller if you haven't already. I didn't change much in adrenaline. Just used the OC preset als "global setting" and then hit the game. The downside of it: I measured fps with reprojection off. When I then turned it "always on" in another mission, it was the same problem as before. Fps dropped down to 30fps even where with reprojection turned off my pfs never dropped below 50fps.
-
I did it! I hit the 70fps. Screenshots coming later. I removed all Programms like wmr for steamvr and reinstalled it. Then I deinstalled my USB devices in steamvr and I used ddu to deinstal Nvidia drivers. Then I set my power limit to 115%. Edit: I also opted in for betas in steamvr and lgk version of wmr.

So, here are my results with my 6900XT: Since i only have a Reverb G1 i had to adjust the resolution manually to match with yours. First bench was at SS 100%. The main result here is that i am really not able to get your 70fps of your test shown on page 1. Second Bench was at SS 76%. Results here are indeed matching with your test. Somehow, with SS 100% the GPU distribution is somewhat strange. While a great amount of GPU usage is in the 80 - 90% range, also a lot is down between 0 - 20% range. That is merely what i mean with it is shuttling or swinging between high and low usage. I try to higher the power limit of the card and will test again. @JayRoc What steps did you do to OC your 6800XT?
-
DCS really doesn't care which CPU you use as long it is driving fast enough. Sure, some newer CPUs like the new ryzen will also improve fps a bit due to better/newer technology. But when it comes to VR you will be bottlenecked by the GPU more often then by CPU (except big mp missions with a lot going on). That being said, I would rather invest in a new GPU and see how far you'll come with maybe over locking your i5.
-
Das liegt aber am schlecht optimierten DCS in Verbindung mit der CPU die da meist ins Limit läuft. Da kann man wirklich nicht viel machen. Leider!
-
Thanks! In that case it really makes no sense to use an additional program that could possibly mess around.
-
So, do I still need to start steamvr or wmr for steamvr then? Or do I just need WMR and openXR then?
-
This! I was wondering the same. I am not able to hold steady 45fps with reprojection on some scenes with fps then dropping down to 30. Although I have around 15ms GPU frametimes. The same scene with reprojection off I manage to get 50 - 60 fps. I guess there is something wrong with SteamVR and the new AMD cards. I'll be back tomorrow on my rig and will try a fresh install of the software.
