  1. if you have spent hours shooting tanks with vikhrs and staring at the shkval CRT screen, in the su-25t. then be prepared to do it all over again in the ka50 as it has basically the same weapons load and battlefield role. one of the things that put me off the ka 50, having flown a lot of the su 25t. now the mi8 is as different to the huey as the a10c is to the SU-25t.. so just different enough to be really interesting :)
  2. Start on 0 degrees collective, the wheel brake off and a little left pedal to hold it straight. between 0-1 degrees collective the engines actually provides more thrust to the tail than lift. so you may need a little more left pedal. as you increase collective through 1-2 degrees bring the pedals neutral and then between 2-3 degrees start putting in right pedal. mileage may vary (will vary depending on load :) ) but something like that will allow you to take the 5 seconds to raise the collective 3 degrees (as recommended in the manual) without rolling it. the other way to overcome it is to smoothly yank the collective :) then the thrust from the main disk quickly overcomes the lateral thrust.. edit: i have just noticed on the sling loading thread cibit has a video of him taking off using the rudder autopilot. you can clearly see it putting in the left pedal at first and holding it after the collective begins to rise (the H on the autopilot display) it really kicks in when he takes the brake off. https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=177638
  3. i would say they compliment each other very well.. the mi-8 teaches Huey pilots patience :) and corrects some bad habits they may have picked up the huey teaches mi-8 pilots how to fly helicopters with no control delay.. so i would start in hueys :)
  4. did you finish that mission? when you go for the high mountain pickup the rain turns to snow and the de icing system robs you of power just when you need it most.. especially as i volunteered for all the extra weight.. i really liked that mission.... i had horrendous icing problem for the whole final leg... first the engines, then the rotor and tail kicked in. and i started dropping like a stone till it all stabilised. just because it says 15c in the sun in the valley does not mean squat really :) its march in the caucuses...
  5. the new English manual covers this. (thank you belsimtek!!) it is dynamic roll-over caused by to much right rudder to early. the lateral thrust from the tail rotor pushes you over. it wants to turn you to the right but as the wheels form a triangle. it tips you left and forward and unbalances the triangle and you roll over. especially if you have the wheel brakes on. the square profile of the skids must prevent this being an issue in the huey. and its lower profile. so use less rudder until the collective takes effect. if this happens to you. only use right pedal to counter left yaw. don't put it in early. in the huey i was setting the rudder before raising the collective. and that kills you in the MI -8 and i thought it was a cyclic issue... but no,reading the glorious new manual and testing it, it is all rudder.. (I have just swapped racing wheel pedals for MFG crosswinds.. why my pedal and collective inputs are now more in tune.. no more needing to get the pedal right before raising the collective.) so its a quirk of the mi-8 , its height, its triangle wheel profile, and the strong positive tail rotor trim built in for ease of cruise. (why you need lots of left pedal to taxi straight) meaning right rudder on the ground can cause dynamic roll over. its also a bad habit you may have brought over from the huey... rudder in to early.. like me.
  6. There are no boring jobs, when you have someone interesting to talk with long boring flights are only improved with banter. and the more mark 1 eyeballs you have, the more enemies/missiles you detect... and four drunk people flying one of these, does sound decidedly Russian :) what else do you do when ferrying in the radar coolant for the mig21's? :) "in-flight cocktails for everyone!" i think i would make this mission just for the you tube video... with screen prompts for when everyone must drink :)
  7. After trying to do a couple of running starts and failing with a crash, i now take off using a full right rudder turn. As this provides enough thrust to the main disk to get enough height to get over that hump. (no low RPM warning) yes you take off spinning to the right. and everyone in the back screams. but once you are high enough you can use left rudder to straighten her up and gain enough transitional speed for lift. before the low RPM sends you back into the mountain. you just have to watch out for your tail on the walls of the notch. much easier than bump starting.. and quicker too. i remembered mason does it in chickenhawk to get out of a minefield he is hovering in.. when he cant get enough lift to clear the barbedwire fence at its edge.. due to being overloaded. so its amusing that it worked just as well in the sim.
